Hello, Kyoto Fans! Summer is the time for fun, and the season offers plenty of amazing festivals for you to enjoy and hopefully forget the heat, dominated by the super popular Gion Matsuri! If you’ll be joining us in Kyoto in July, check out some of these events.
Tanabata Star Festival at Kōdai-ji | July 7th – 8th
Kōdai-ji temple holds a special night illumination for the Tanabata Festival. Special bamboo branches decorated by young children are set up along the main path for visitors to enjoy, and the gardens are also lit up.
Gion Matsuri Float Processions | July 17th & 24th
The most famous festival in Kyoto, Gion Matsuri has events running almost the whole month! The main events are the float processions, but the nights before these big days are also full of activity and fun, as people wander through downtown at night exploring the float neighborhoods and partying.
Mitarashi-sai Festival at Shimogamo Shrine | July 20th – 29th
During this festival, designed to pray for good health and to ward off foot injuries, people wade through the small, refreshingly cool river at Shimogamo Shrine carrying candles to the Mitarashi sub-shrine. Of course, you also need to enjoy some mitarashi dango sweets while you’re there!
Motomiya-sai Festival at Fushimi Inari Taisha | July 21st & 22nd
Countless lanterns decorate the gorgeous Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine, many featuring beautiful traditional art done by local artists. The night is illuminated by lanterns, beckoning people to explore the shrine’s torii gate tunnels at night, enjoy festival food, or partake in folk music and dance.
Hiwatari Matsuri Festival at Tanukidani-san Fudō-in | July 28th, 19:00
Can you handle the heat? Head to this Buddhist temple that practices shugendō asceticism and watch as mountain monks chant sutras and burn a bonfire, raking out the still-burning coals and using the strength of their mental fortitude to cross over barefoot. Once it’s safe, line up and try crossing over yourself!
