A*o Shrine is one of the great historical buildings of A*o. As a shrine dedicated to the deities who first pioneered the A*o region in Japanese myth, it has come to symbolize volcano worship. It is home to three shrine houses and three gates nationally designated as Important Cultural Properties, which are popular with sightseers. Major sections of the buildings either were damaged or collapsed in the 2016 earthquake, but after eight years, their original appearance has been restored. A thousand-year-old pine tree stands in the shrine’s grounds, which is said to bless visitors with good fortune. Why not come witness the majesty of A*o Shrine, and get a feel for the history of A*o?

In the island nation of Japan, terraced rice paddies that make efficient use of mountain slopes can be seen in rural mountain villages. The Shiraito Plateau in Kumamoto was designated an Important Cultural Landscape by the Japanese government because of its beautiful scenery and the historical value of the Tsujunkyo Bridge, which was constructed to send water. Built in 1854, the largest stone arch bridge in Japan is the result of advanced construction techniques, and the powerful discharge of water from the bridge is a must-see spectacle. Why not visit Kumamoto to see the quintessentially Japanese landscape shaped by the Tsujunkyo Bridge?

Did you know that Kumamoto Prefecture is home to bronze statues of characters from the iconic Japanese manga ONE PIECE? Built in various locations to symbolize Kumamoto's recovery from the 2016 earthquake, these statues have become popular sightseeing spots among manga and anime fans. Each character and its installed location has its own meaning, and together they help local residents with recovery. Take a trip to Kumamoto to see the Straw Hat Pirates in various locations would be fun, I think.

In Kumamoto, the traditional craft of higo zogan inlaid metalwork preserves the memory of samurai culture. Originally, these patterns were applied to samurai sword hilts and gun barrels, but today, the technique has been passed down to create interior decorations and accessories. The most distinctive feature of this craft is its elegant beauty, which embodies the samurai culture of restrained elegance, in delicate patterns of gold and silver inlaid on a black base metal. In Kumamoto City, you can actually try your hand at higo zogan crafting. Why not create something beautiful as a memento of your trip?

Kumamoto City is also in the spotlight now as a production center for high quality Japanese sake. Why is sake from Kumamoto so delicious? It’s because the raw ingredients of local rice, high-quality water, and yeast have been carefully passed down from generation to generation. The natural subterranean waters that flow from A*o ensure that rice grows with rich flavor here. The yeast that is so essential for making sake was carefully researched and developed, then released as "Kumamoto yeast" in 1952. Using these , local breweries creates sake with deep flavor. Trying local sake with regional cuisine is one of the most enjoyable aspects of traveling. Be sure to visit Kumamoto City and enjoy it.

Rich in natural subterranean waters that flow down from Mount A*o, Kumamoto City is famous for its water and verdant greenery.
It is one of the few cities in the world where all tap water is supplied by groundwater. Thanks to an abundance of mineral-rich water, fruits such as strawberries and watermelons, vegetables such as tomatoes and onions, and ornamental carnations and Japanese irises are grown here. Strawberry picking is a popular pastime in Kumamoto City, which boasts an abundance of such agricultural produce. Originally, strawberries would only grow in a short season, but thanks to the mild climate and farming methods using plastic greenhouses, these days strawberry picking can be enjoyed from December to May.

The most beautiful place to view the Suizenji Jojuen Garden is the Kokindenju-no-Ma on the park grounds. Built 400 years ago in Kyoto, it was used by Yusai, the grandfather of the first generation of the Hosokawa family to rule Kumamoto, as a place to instruct Prince the Kokin Wakashu, an anthology of ancient Japanese poetry. The building was dismantled, preserved, and moved to its present location in 1912.
The sliding doors, paintings on sliding screens, and pillars of the building all have historical value, reminding us how ancient people lived. Enjoy Japanese sweets and tea and immerse yourself in scenes of samurai life and the gentle flow of time.

The appeal of a Japanese garden is that stones, ponds, plants, bridges, and artificial hills are arranged and presented in a limited space, allowing visitors to truly appreciate the changing seasons with all the senses. At Suizenji Jojuen Garden (Suizenji Park) in Kumamoto City, partially submerged stones and artificial hills are placed around a pond, where subterranean water from the A*o region gushes out, so visitors can enjoy a stroll or tea time while appreciating the gentle passage of time.
Ume plum blossoms can be seen from mid-February to March, while cherry blossoms are on display near the artificial hill from late March to early April, making this a fantastic photo spot. Kumamoto has many cherry blossom viewing spots such as the Suizenji Jojuen Garden and Kumamoto Castle, which are recommended for travelers who want a glimpse of springtime in Japan.

One of Japan’s most popular foods is ramen. Even within the broader category of ramen, the style of noodles, seasonings, and toppings are individual to each region. In Kumamoto, a unique evolution of flavor known as "Kumamoto ramen" has taken root. The aroma of seared garlic and fried garlic oil in the thick pork-bone broth is extremely appetizing. Toppings include boiled egg, chashu pork, wood ear mushrooms, cubed pork, and seaweed, making this one of the most popular styles of ramen in Japan. Visit Kumamoto to enjoy the authentic flavor.

Tea has a rich history in Japan and is deeply ingrained in the country's traditional culture. It is believed that the tea ceremony style was established around 400 years ago by the tea master Sen no Rikyu. Yusai, the first head of the Hosokawa family who ruled Kumamoto for an extended period, placed equal importance on the tea ceremony and martial arts. His son Tadaoki is known as an outstanding disciple of Sen no Rikyu. Experience the tea ceremony of the Higo Koryu school, inspired by Rikyu's philosophy of "containing the universe in a cup of tea," and showcasing the warrior etiquette of the Hosokawa family that continues to thrive today.

Kuma River is one such river, considered to be one of the three most rapid rivers in the country. The upper reaches of the Kuma River are also known as the Kawabe River and have been recognized by the national government as the river with the purest water in Japan(*). The Kuma River is also renowned for its "Kuma River Rafting," where boatmen navigate the rapids in traditional wooden boats. From gentle introductory courses to more challenging options for enthusiasts, visitors can also partake in rafting activities and experience the rush of adrenaline amidst lush green landscapes.

During autumn, Kumamoto Castle presents a mystical sight amidst the dark nights and changing colors of the trees. In addition to the towering Tenshukaku (The keeps), visitors can admire the large ginkgo tree, believed to have been planted by the daimyo (feudal lord) who built the castle, Kato Kiyomasa himself. The beauty is not limited to just Tenshukaku. Other spectacles include the "Uto-Yagura," a multi-complex turret structure with an architecture that precedes the keeps, the "Niyo-no Ishigaki," a stone wall featuring diverse masonry techniques, and the "Take-Akari," bamboo sculptures which illuminate the surrounding area with soft light. The combination of light art and Kumamoto's historical richness results in a harmonious display of the highest caliber.

Kuma Shochu, an ancient Japanese distilled liquor, has a history so long that its name can be found in books dating back about 500 years. The WTO has designated the name "Kuma Shochu" as a Geographical Indication for the area of production, meaning that only products made with rice, groundwater from the Hitoyoshi Kuma area, and bottled in this area can carry this valuable distilled spirit's name. It's a daily favorite in Kumamoto, with flavors ranging from those that are strictly traditional to those that incorporate modern tastes. Pair it with the various local cuisine for a truly complementary experience.
