Japan's "Zombie Shinkansen" has set a new standard for immersive experiences. On October 19, 2024, to celebrate the month of Halloween, this unprecedented event transformed a section of the Nozomi 435 bullet train from Tokyo to Osaka into a full-fledged haunted house on wheels. Inspired by the film Train to Busan, the experience featured over 20 actors who seamlessly blended among passengers before triggering the “zombie outbreak.” Participants witnessed choreographed performances, including magic acts and even a "Thriller" dance routine, balancing thrills with entertainment. This one-of-a-kind initiative showcases JR Central's commitment to exploring innovative tourism experiences.

Japanese etiquette, or galateo, is a profound expression of respect and harmony in daily life. Rooted in centuries-old traditions, it emphasizes politeness, consideration for others, and attention to detail in every interaction.

From the subtle art of bowing to the proper way of exchanging business cards, Japanese galateo reflects the cultural values of humility and order. Understanding these customs not only enhances social and professional exchanges but also deepens one’s connection with the country’s heritage.

At MTJ, we emphasize the importance of etiquette in providing authentic and respectful experiences.

More Than Just Autumn Leaves: Discover Japan’s Koyo Season 🍁

Japan’s koyo season transforms the landscape into a vivid tapestry of reds, oranges, and yellows. While the iconic maple trees are central to the spectacle, ginkgo trees also contribute with their striking golden hues, especially along avenues like Tokyo’s Meiji Jingu Gaien. 🍂

Kyoto enhances the autumnal atmosphere with illuminated night displays at temples such as Kiyomizudera, where the glowing foliage reflects on tranquil waters. In the Kansai region, the unique tradition of momiji tempura—maple leaves delicately fried in batter—offers a seasonal culinary experience. 🍤
Though delayed due to summer heat, the 2024 koyo season promises extended opportunities for appreciation.

Have you experienced Japan’s autumn before? What’s your favorite spot to enjoy the koyo season?

Japan’s Airports: Gateways to Unforgettable Experiences.

Japan’s airports are more than just transit points; they’re gateways to extraordinary experiences. Did you know that Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, now handling more international flights, offers faster access to the city center than Narita? Or that Osaka’s Kansai International Airport is built on an artificial island? Japan’s commitment to efficiency and innovation extends to its airports, with high-speed rail connections, world-class amenities, and even cultural exhibitions. 🛫

As Japan continues to enhance its airport infrastructure, including plans for a third runway at Narita by 2029, we’re excited about the improved accessibility for our clients. ✨

The summer of 2024 saw Japan's tourism flourish, with over 3 million visitors arriving in July, a 51.2% increase from the previous year. 📈
Despite the scorching heat, with temperatures surpassing 32°C, tourists found ways to beat the heat. One popular trend has been the use of cool collars, wearable devices designed to keep body temperatures down. These collars, which can be chilled before wearing, are now a must-have accessory for those exploring Japan's vibrant cities. ❄️
To stay safe, tourists are also advised to stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours.

Obon, celebrated from August 13-16, is a major Japanese festival where families honor their deceased ancestors with rituals like cleaning graves, making offerings, and performing Bon Odori dances. 🏮
Lanterns are lit to guide the spirits back to the afterlife.

In 2024, the peak travel period for Obon is expected from August 10-18. During this time, Nozomi Shinkansen trains will operate with reserved seats only, increasing the number of reserved seats by 1.3 times to accommodate the high demand. 🚅
Ticket prices for Shinkansen journeys, such as Tokyo to Kyoto, start at approximately $83.99 one-way, while Osaka to Tokyo starts at $87.49. 💴

How does a mountain transform an entire region’s economy?🗻

Mt. Fuji’s two-month climbing season creates a unique microeconomy in Japan. This UNESCO site attracts thousands of climbers, boosting local businesses. Mountain huts offer premium-priced services, while 5th stations become hubs for gear and souvenirs. Guides and tour operators thrive.

The impact extends to nearby towns, filling hotels and restaurants. However, environmental concerns and seasonal employment pose challenges. As Japan recovers post-pandemic and faces climate change, balancing growth with sustainability is crucial. ✨

Can this seasonal boom be sustainably managed for long-term prosperity?

As Japan's rainy season, "tsuyu," concludes, the country's tourism industry experiences a vibrant renaissance. The transition from humid, overcast days to clearer skies brings a remarkable transformation to Japan's landscapes and tourism opportunities. Nature enthusiasts rejoice as rain-nourished scenery bursts into bloom, while Mt. Fuji emerges from its cloudy veil, attracting climbers and photographers. This period also marks the beginning of summer festivals, or "matsuri," offering unique cultural experiences across the country. 🎆

The tourism industry sees a surge in both domestic and international travel. Ryokans, outdoor attractions, and Japanese gardens prepare for increased visitors, each offering distinct experiences enhanced by the post-rain ambiance. However, this boom presents challenges, including potential overcrowding at popular destinations and rising temperatures.
The industry must now focus on capitalizing on this resurgence while ensuring sustainable and enjoyable experiences for all visitors in this new, sunny chapter of Japanese tourism. 🎌

How many times have you looked into your cat’s eyes and said to yourself: that’s the most beautiful animal in the world!! 😻

As if all the cuddles aren’t enough, generally in the second half of the February, this “trusty” pet has a dedicated day.🐈

In Japan, the chosen day to celebrate cats is always the 22nd of February. It’s not a coincidence that the day chosen is the one above. You should know that in Japanese the date “22-02” can be pronounced as “nyan nyan nyan” (cat sound in Japan).

In other words, February 22 is “Meow Meow Meow” day! 🐱

Embark on a journey through history along Nakasendo (中山道), literally translating to "path through the mountains," an ancient thoroughfare in central Japan. Certain sections of this meticulously restored route have become coveted tourist destinations, celebrated for the scenic beauty of traditional villages along its course. Two such gems are Magome and Tsumago.

This approximately 7-kilometer nature walk provides an opportunity to stroll amidst towering cypress trees and bamboo, showcasing the typical vegetation of dense Japanese forests. Immerse yourself in a bygone era as you traverse the path, encountering various temples, shrines, small waterfalls, and numerous tea houses. Once vital "rest stops," these tea houses still offer a haven for modern-day travelers seeking refreshment.

How to Reach Nakasendo:
🚉 The trail between Magome and Tsumago begins at Nakatsugawa station for Magome and Nagiso station for Tsumago. Both stations are accessible via the JR line.

Located in southern Kyoto, it is renowned as the most significant Shinto shrine dedicated to Inari, the Goddess of Rice. The shrine's grounds are adorned with numerous statues representing the fox, which, in the Shinto belief, serves as Inari's messenger, carrying the key to the rice granary in its mouth.
