Gujo Odori Dance Festival has begun!
郡上おどりがはじまりました。
The traditional dance festival called Gujo Odori has started in Gujo Hachiman, Gifu Prefecture, from July 13. Every year from July to August, Gujō Odori is held for 30 nights, attracting local residents and tourists alike to enjoy dancing and festivities.
With a history spanning over 400 years, Gujō Odori's origins can be traced back to the Edo period. Originally, it was a social event that provided people in the feudal society with a free opportunity for interaction, disregarding social status, gender, age, or attire, allowing everyone to dance together.
One of the distinctive features of Gujō Odori is its inclusivity. Anyone can participate, regardless of background. Visitors from abroad are also warmly welcomed. While traditional yukata (Summer Cotton Kimono) worn by dancers can be rented from hotels or shops, wearing T-shirts and jeans is also acceptable. There are no qualifications or gender restrictions, making it a celebration of diversity and freedom.
Accompanied by the unique rhythms played on traditional Japanese instruments such as flutes, drums, and shamisen, Gujō Odori is a participatory event where the audience can join in the dancing. This unique festival was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2022, offering both domestic and international visitors a valuable opportunity to experience Japanese traditional culture.
