Saiki in Oita prefecture is famous for its beautiful sea and delicious fresh fish. But you can also enjoy the mountainside and crystal clear water as well.

Saiki is great place to see beautiful flowers in the spring. But you can also enjoy lovely flowers in Kamae area in the summer as well. Would you like to try to photograph them? It would be a great way to spend an afternoon in Saiki.
There are many great beaches in Saiki. Today I'll introduce Hatouzu beach in the Kamae area. This amazing beach is one of the 100 most beautiful white-sand beaches in Japan. Why not come and visit this beautiful relaxing beach for yourself, you will be glad that you did.
There is a lovely art museum using a closed school nearby.

On the 6th of July, at Motosaru beach in Saiki, cleaning the beach and an annual Shinto ritual will take place. The priest prays to the God of the sea for the safety of those who love the sea. The public can witness this ritual. This beautiful beach should be on your list of things to visit in Saiki.

When the climate gets hot, rock oyster (IWAGAKI), grunt(ISAKI) and whitebait (SHIRASU) seem to get more tasty.
You can enjoy these tasty seafood dishes at select restaurants in Saiki during the Rock oyster fair and the Tsurumi Grunt & Whitebait Fair 2024.

Spring has completely arrived in Saiki. The cherry blossoms are blooming, there will be a tulip festival in the Yanase, Ume area on April 7th, the Forsythias are in full bloom ... There is a lot of springtime color to see and enjoy in Saiki, it would be a great time to visit.

We highly recommend visiting the Honjo area in Saiki around the end of March.
The Canola flowers will then be in full-bloom and cherry blossoms will follow them shortly after.
Do you know a plant named Mitsumata (Brushpaper)?
Using the traditional Japanese method, paper was made from this plant.
Honjo is also famous for the largest waterwheel in the western Japan.
So please come to Saiki and see the flowers, you will enjoy your nice trip to Honjo.

Spring has come, don't you think so?
There are a lot of nice spots to see flowers in Saiki.
We highly recommend "Shiogama Zakura" starting this weekend for one week.
There are large old Sakura trees located in a quiet temple called Kurosawa Toukou-an in the Aoyama area.
You will find that puttering around in this area is also nice to do.
Sakura (cherry blossom) season is not very long, so please try not to miss it.

The Saiki Hinameduri (Hina doll event) will soon finish on March 10th.
Yet you can still enjoy flowers blooming in many places in Saiki from spring to summer.
On 10th March at Yasaka shrine (Era, Yayoi, Saiki), you can see Shinto rituals and Kagura (sacred music and dance performance) from 12:30〜16:00.

Hinameguri (Hinamatruri displays Feb. 23~March 10) Hinamatruri, or the Doll festival, is an annual event held every March to pray for the healthy growth of girls. In Saiki, we display various types of dolls at four different locations along the Rekishi to Bungaku no Michi or the History and Literature road. Especially Hanabina, or dolls decorated with flowers, are on display, which are unique in Saiki. Please come and visit, enjoy the sweet smell of the flowers and view the beautiful dolls.
Saiki is famous for fresh seafood. Don’t forget to enjoy some nice seafood after seeing the displays!
The Tanga Battery Ruins, which is located on the Tsurumi Peninsula in Saiki City, Oita Prefecture, will be having an new exhibition starting on February 15th through March 25th, 2024. The exhibition, called What I Saw There, will feature works by 12 photographers. The doors open at 9:30 a.m and close at 4:30 p.m. Keep in mind that the museum is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Admission fee is 200 yen for adults and 100 yen for children.

This time we’ll introduce a unique festival, the “Kiura Simitsuke matsuri festival”.
The Kiura Simitsuke matsuri festival was held on Saturday, February 10th in Ume, Saiki. The festival is held once every two years.
Sumitsuke means : "blackening the face" and matsuri is festival. If you went to the festival, you had be prepared to have your face blackened with a charcoal covered daikon radish. The origin of the festival is said to be based on the story of a survivor from a mining accident, who at the time was very dirty with charcoal. So at this festival everyone put charcoal on each other wishing them good health and good luck. The festival was a lot fun, with everyone, including the local police, laughing and enjoying themselves.
Due to the small size of the place, the festival had to be limited to people in Saiki. We hope that the festival will be open to everyone in the coming future.

Now is a good time to enjoy some delicious yellow tail.
You will find that tuna, along with puffy fish, flounder and sea bream, are served at many restaurants in Saiki.
