We are pleased to announce the successful conclusion of the third INAKA NO ARUKIKATA online dialogue. We extend our sincere gratitude to our guest, Laura, and all the participants for their valuable contributions.

The theme of this session was INAKA (Rural Japan) and Travel writing. Laura, a writer for GaijinPot, shared insightful perspectives from a foreigner's viewpoint on the desired information and effective communication methods. Her practical advice was truly enlightening.

Laura shared a captivating personal account of her challenges in finding information on Japanese mythology while living in the United States and her subsequent discovery of Shimane, where she now immerses herself in the world of mythology she adores. Her profound knowledge of Nihon Shoki and Fudoki truly showcased her passion.

This session prompted us to contemplate the genuine allure of Japan and the immense value of global individuals like Laura in showcasing the potential of rural areas. We aspire for these insights to reach the right audience.

We have recorded this session for your convenience. Please take the time to review it. We eagerly anticipate the fourth session!

Exploring Japan’s rural areas can be challenging, especially when it comes to transportation. At ThoughINAKA, we understand these challenges and often recommend renting a car for the best experience.

However, renting a car can be tricky if you don’t speak Japanese. Many rental counters have limited English-speaking staff. That’s why we assist our guests with car rentals, from booking to paperwork, with the help of our local guides.

It’s also essential to know Japanese traffic signs, as some are only in Japanese. Missing signs like “Stop” can lead to accidents. Safety first!

Before you drive in Japan, please familiarize yourself with the local driving rules. Resources like the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) are very helpful.

Need help with travel or car rentals in Japan? ThoughINAKA is here for you!

Thank you very much to everyone who participated in the Inaka No Arukikata real encounter in Okuizumo. Thanks to all of you, we had a wonderful experience. During this tour, we aimed to explore the charm of the region from different perspectives, including Japan and foreign countries, rural and urban areas, and share not only tourist attractions but also the real aspects of the region. We wanted to create an environment where conversations could happen comfortably, in both English and Japanese, at your own pace, without the constraints of a typical guided tour. It was a space where everyone could freely share opinions and knowledge, leading to various learnings and insights.

I am grateful for everyone's cooperation and support. I personally had a very meaningful experience. I look forward to continuing to take on new challenges. To all those who joined us and those who couldn't make it this time, I hope we'll have the opportunity to travel together again in the future. Thank you all, and let's keep in touch.

We would like to extend a special acknowledgement to our esteemed guest, Marco, whose captivating presentation inspired and enlightened us. I want to share the story of the curry I’m making for “Inaka no Arukikata: The Real Encounter” and how it differs from other curries, as well as explain the difference between hot and spicy.

When I first came to Japan, I had no idea how to prepare curry. It was a time before YouTube tutorials, so I relied on self-experimentation, which led to many mistakes.

As you may know, Sri Lankans can eat curry for all three meals, which surprises many people. However, if you were to suggest eating Japanese curry for three meals, it might seem impossible.

Each curry has its own unique flavors, spices, and ingredients. Many people ask if it’s hot, while others ask if it’s spicy. One of the tour participants asked the same question, prompting me to think about how to explain the difference.

Firstly, hot and spicy are two different things. Curry can be spicy without being hot. Hotness comes from chili, including Sri Lankan pepper, which contributes to the heat.

In Sri Lankan curry, we use Thunapaha curry powder, which consists of coriander, cumin, and around 10 other spices. This blend is what makes Sri Lankan curry unique, and each household has its own blend. Many moms still make their own home-style curry powders with their unique blends.

I still ask my mom to make me Thunapaha, and she sends it all the way from Sri Lanka. Some households add chili to the blend, making the curry powder itself hot.

For the curry I’m making, one will be a bit hot with a little chili, and the other will be without chili, and both are vegetarian-friendly.

If you’d like to join us, you are welcome. But if you are thinking of joining full tour, hurry up! We only have two slots available at Tsukaru.

Our inaugural INAKA NO ARUKIKATA: The Art of Immersion in Rural Japan – An Online Dialogue concluded yesterday. I'm thrilled that we had enthusiastic participants from Japan and France. I want to thank everyone who joined us and contributed to the discussions. Time flew by as we delved into the many fascinating aspects of Tottori and Misasa town.

I'd like to extend a special thanks to Marie, who led a thought-provoking discussion on Japanese Inaka. Her deep affection for Tottori and Misasa town was evident, and it was a true privilege to have her share her insights with us. However, I couldn't help but feel that the people of our area didn't fully capture her passion. I hope that we can continue to work together to showcase the beauty and richness of our region more effectively.

As I reflect on the various aspects of our dialogue, I'm filled with excitement for future sessions. The Q&A and networking sessions were particularly enriching, providing new insights into the area and sharing crucial updates relevant to those engaged in tourism in this region. We'll continue these discussions and eagerly anticipate our next one.

INAKA NO ARUKIKATA

Dive into the captivating story of Mr. Hisatada Kawashima from Unshu Chuzen Hamono (cutlery) in Okuizumo-cho, Nita-gun, Shimane Prefecture Japan.

Since graduating in 1953, Mr. Kawashima has dedicated himself to the art of Japanese knife making for an astonishing 70 years. Every moment in his workshop is a testament to precision and dedication.

“The critical moment of joining iron and steel together is best done at the lowest temperature. Even a slight miscalculation can lead to failure.”

Mr. Kawashima’s expertise was not learned in a classroom but through hands-on experience and unwavering dedication. “To truly master it, you have to rely on your own efforts. Experience speaks louder than words.”

In the world of knife making, failure is not a setback but a valuable learning opportunity. “It’s all about continuously striving for improvement. There is no perfection or ending, and that’s why I love it.”

After concluding the local guides' debriefing session

Nearly two years ago, "Tavikala" started collaborating with local guides capable of navigating foreigners through this region. While proficiency in English may be enough for essential guidance, our mission extends beyond mere interpretation or guidance.
Situated far beyond Tokyo, our area may only attract a few visitors with a specific reason to venture here. Consequently, we anticipated a limited influx of foreigners.
Our distinctive approach aimed to narrate the area's story to niche individuals genuinely desiring a deeper exploration.
For instance, "Ikigai" delves into what motivates people or artisans to safeguard traditions for generations. Surprisingly, our guests were acquainted with the Ikigai concept, their eyes shining during interactions with locals. Locals, in turn, found joy in having their efforts acknowledged by individuals from distant parts of the world.
Additionally, we explored Samurai stories, interpreting them not merely as warriors but as heroes pivotal to the area's economic and cultural growth.
Another exceptional tour involved unraveling Japan's roots, commencing from Izumo Grand Shrine and concluding in Okuizumo. This showcased Japan's history through the protection and prayers of deities and the diligent work of its people, including ancient Japanese iron-making.
Our storytellers are now poised to advance, grateful for extensive support from the local community, especially those dedicating time and effort to ensure the success of our tours.
Recognition is due to local authorities offering the opportunity to initiate this vital project.
Special acknowledgment extends to enthusiastic local guides and storytellers who built this project from scratch, some being mothers with small kids and juggling additional responsibilities. Despite challenges, their commitment prevailed. All guests visiting our area will find safety and satisfaction in the hands of these dedicated individuals.
In this instance, we were honored to host special guests, Nakayama San, Feilang San, and Hino San from ROOTS Journey, who journeyed from Keihoku to dedicate three days to encouraging our local guides. Their alignment with the concept of crossing borders makes them ideal inspirations for our local guides. We express sincere gratitude for their invaluable advice, particularly for instilling confidence and courage in the locals who are relatively new to welcoming foreigners.
