Finally, the coldest air outbreak has put everything under the snow! Traditional thatched houses in Kayabukino-sato in northern Kyoto are also covered with deep snow and showing fabulous beauty of its roofs.
As trains/buses are canceled due to the heavy snow, we enjoyed calm and uncrowded walk in the village unexpectedly.

The travelers to Kansai area may not be aware about how to enjoy snow in Kansai.

Here's an example.

This is truly in Osaka, and just one hour drive + 6 min ropeway ride from center of the city.

We rarely have snow in town indeed, but there're many places near the city even the traveler can access easily in a day tour.

Is it true to have natural ice in summer!?

Our ancestors' wisdom made it possible! The thick ice blocks which are cut out in coldest time of winter, then stored in a ground with isolation materials like straw. The room is called as "Himuro".

On 13the of July, a Himuro on top of Rokko Mt. in Kobe, is opened.

Oh! it's summer time!
We miss snow, but it is summer festival season.
One of famous styles of this portable shrine called "Danjiri" is a typical highlight of Japan's festival. Not like the portable shrine often seen in Tokyo area, Danjiri in Kansai area has big wooden wheels, and glittering decorations!
