【Nagasaki local specialty : Nagasaki Oden】
Have you tried Japanese food “Oden”?

Oden is a type of hot pot dish popular in winter. It consists of various ingredients: radish, Konnyaku, hard-boiled eggs, potatoes, fish cakes etc. cooked in soy flavored dashi(broth).
You can find it in traditional Japanese restaurants, convenience stores, and food stalls especially in winter.

In Nagasaki, we have “Nagasaki Oden”!
It’s also one of the Nagasaki local specialties.

What’s the difference between Nagasaki Oden and normal Oden?

The unique part of Nagasaki Oden is the fish. Fish Cakes and flying fish broth(Ago-dashi) are the leading role of Nagasaki Oden. Nagasaki catches a lot of fish. Flying fish, called “Ago” in Nagasaki dialect, are a special product in Nagasaki and they are used in the soup of Nagasaki Oden. The fish cakes are made locally too. So fish is local production and perfect for local consumption!

Whether you have tried Oden or not, try Nagasaki Oden when you visit Nagasaki!

【Momo Castella】

Have you had “Momo Castella” before?

It’s a local Nagasaki sweet, a sponge cake shaped like a peach and covered in a sweet sugar frosting that looks just like a peach. (Momo means "peach" in English)

Peaches are a symbol of longevity in China, and Castella (Sponge cake) was influenced by the Portuguese. Nagasaki had a strong connection with China and Portugal throughout history which has influenced Nagasaki culture. Momo Castella is a unique seasonal sweet in Nagasaki.
In Nagasaki city, it’s part of the culture for people to give “Momo Castella” as a gift to close relatives or friends with a baby girl for her first Girl’s Day celebration, which is March 3rd in Japan.

The season is going on now so you can see these cakes at many places in Nagasaki city.

Would you like to try one?
They bring you good luck!

【Nagasaki Prefectural Government Observation Deck】

Nagasaki has unique topography, a port city surrounded by mountains on three sides. Mt. Inasa and Mt. Nabekanmuri are places that have popular observatories which can both be enjoyed by locals and tourists. However, it might be difficult to get there by public transport. This good news is, there is a great observatory near Nagasaki Station. It’s the Nagasaki Prefectural Government Observation Deck.

When you go up to the 8th floor of the Nagasaki Prefectural Government building, you can walk out to the observatory!
It’s open to the public, everyone is welcome during their business hours(9am-9pm)

You can see Mt. Inasa, Nagasaki port with Megami Ohashi bridge, and the city landscape over 180° from there. It’s good during both the day and night!

Actually, the Nagasaki Prefectural Government building was moved to its new location by the sea in 2018, so the whole building is fairly new and modern.

If you have some time when you are near Nagasaki station and just want to see the nice view from the observatory, it’s a good choice!
There is also a cafeteria which is open to visitors!

【Strawberries in Nagasaki】

Strawberry season has arrived!

Nagasaki is an ideal place for strawberry production with a mild climate and lots of sunshine. In Nagasaki city, the Mogi, Higashi-Nagasaki, and Kinkai districts produce the most. In fact, it’s one of their main crops. Their main markets for strawberries are in the Kanto(e.g. Tokyo) and Kansai (e.g. Osaka) regions. You can find or try Nagasaki strawberries in those areas too!

Did you know that Nagasaki has a strong connection with strawberries in Japanese history as well?

Nagasaki was the only port to have been open to the world during Japan’s isolationist period. At the time, the Dutch were allowed to trade with Japan in Dejima, Nagasaki.
It is said that strawberry production in Japan started when the Dutch brought strawberries to Nagasaki at the end of the Edo period.

Interesting, isn’t it?

Strawberry season is from November to May. Strawberries are rich in vitamin C, and it is said that 6 to 8 large strawberries a day are enough to cover the daily intake for adults. It is a good fruit for the winter season when colds and flu are prevalent.

Why not try Nagasaki delicious strawberries when you have a chance?

【Maruyama: Nagasaki’s Geisha Town】

The geisha are an iconic symbol from Japan that’s widely recognized around the world. When it comes to “geisha” (Japanese traditional female entertainer), Kyoto is the place people think about. However, geisha culture can still be found in modern times in Nagasaki.

Maruyama district in Nagasaki City is an area that once flourished in the Edo period as one of the three major red-light districts in Japan, along with Yoshiwara in Edo and Shimabara in Kyoto. The guests were also Dutch and Chinese traders at the time. Yujo (pr******te) in Maruyama got inspired by geisha(called geikoshi in Nagasaki) traveling from Osaka in the mid-Edo era, they started showing dance or traditional instrument performances in parties. It created the base of the Nagasaki geisha industry which still remains in Nagasaki.

Now there are traditional Japanese restaurants called Ryotei such as “Kagetsu” and “Aoyagi”, where you can enjoy traditional Nagasaki cuisine “Shippoku Ryori”, and they can also arrange Ozashiki-Asobi with geisha(dance and performances by geishas, and table games) if requested in advance.

Also, when you just stroll around the Maruyama area, you can visit Maruyama Park, Nagasaki Kenban office(geisha office), Umezono Migawari Tenmangu Shrine, and Naka no Chaya.

Nagasaki is a city where you can feel the mixed culture of Japan, China, and the West, and Maruyama is where the history and traditional Japanese culture remains in Nagasaki.

Come and experience the “Japanese culture” of exotic Nagasaki in Maruyama and enjoy a geisha experience and Shippoku Ryori experience!

【Happy Valentine’s Day! 】

Happy Valentine’s Day from Nagasaki!

On this day, around the world people exchange cards, candy or flowers with their special “valentine”.

In Japan, Valentine’s Day is the day when women traditionally give chocolates to men. Some women confess love to men with chocolate or gifts. Also, women sometimes give “Giri Choko” , which means “Obligatory Chocolate” to male friends and men at work etc.

Speaking of Chocolate, it is said that chocolate was first introduced to Japan in the end of the 18th century. It was when Nagasaki was the only port open to the world, Dutch traders brought it to Nagasaki and it first became known to the people in Nagasaki.

During Valentine’s season, there are so many varieties of chocolate available. You can find original packages of chocolate which can only be found in Nagasaki!

If you are a chocolate lover, you should definitely get some chocolate as a gift for yourself or for your special “Valentine” when you visit Nagasaki!

【Nagasaki local Sweets: Ikkoko】

Do you know “Ikkoko” of Nagasaki?

Ikkoko is an unusual confection that has red bean paste inside before it is baked, but it becomes hollow after baking.

It was first introduced by a Chinese Zen priest in the middle of the Edo period. In 1844, Enoki Ichiemon, who started the shop called “Ichimaruko” in the Mogi area of Nagasaki city, took many years to create this puffed-up and fragrant confection. He named it "Ikkokko(一口香)", which literally means “One Bite Fragrance” in Japanese. “Ikkoko” has been popular for many years as a Nagasaki specialty and traditional Nagasaki sweets since then.

The dough is made of wheat flour and “mizuame” a traditional Japanese syrup, and filled with brown sugar, mizuame, and honey paste. The filling inside boils up and is almost all gone by the time it’s finished baking. It’s baked with white sesame seeds on top. The skin is crispy and savory and puffs up while the filling boils up inside.

It's a unique local confection in Nagasaki, why don’t you try it when you come to Nagasaki?

【St. Philip Church/Nishizaka Church】
St. Philip Church is located next to Nishizaka park where the 26 martyrs were executed. It was constructed in 1962 adjoining the Memorial Relief of the Martyrdom of the 26 Saints of Japan to commemorate the centennial of the Martyrdom of the 26 Saints.
St Philip’s Church in Nishizaka offers a mass in English at 1:00 pm on Sundays and is also open for prayers even though mass is not held.
The building of the church is very unique as well. The designer is Imai Kanetsugu, who also designed Japan's 26th Saint Memorial Hall. He was catholic himself and introduced the famous Spanish architect Antonio Gaudi to Japan in the early 20 century. You can see the essence of Gaudi in this cathedral building.
If you are interested in Catholic churches and Christian history in Nagasaki, it is recommended to visit St. Philip Church along with the 26 Martyrs Museum. It takes about 10 min. on foot from Nagasaki Station.

【Site of the Martyrdom of the 26 Saints of Japan in Nagasaki】

Have you heard of the 26 martyrs of Japan?

The 26 Martyrs of Japan were a group of missionaries and followers who were executed by crucifixion on February 5, 1597, at Nishizaka hill in Nagasaki.

They were captured in Osaka and Kyoto and forced to march 800km to Nishizaka hill in Nagasaki. It was ordered by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the National ruler. At the time, some parts of Nagasaki had become Jesuit territory and the center of Christianity in Japan. The ex*****on was a warning to Christians to give up their faith because of the threat of the conquest of Japan by Christian missionaries.

Their martyrdom is especially significant in the history of the Catholic Church in Japan.
These 26 believers were canonized by Pope Pius IX in 1862, and they became known as the 26 martyrs.

Pope Pius XII designated this place as an official pilgrimage site for Catholics in 1950. And Pope Francis recently visited here in 2019 after Pope John Paul II visited here in 1981.

At the site of the Martyrdom of the 26 Saints of Japan, there are the 26 Martyrs Museum and the Relief of the Martyrdom of the 26 Saints now. They were constructed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the canonization of the 26 martyrs and the place became Nishizaka Park.

If you are a catholic or interested in Chritian history in Japan/Nagasaki, it is recommended to visit there.

【Daffodils in Nomozaki】

Nomozaki is a district of Nagasaki city at the tip of Nagasaki Peninsula. About 10 million daffodils bloom in splendor in a small park called “Suisen-no-sato'' overlooking the beautiful sea of Nomozaki and the popular Battleship Island.

The annual Nomozaki Daffodils Festival was supposed to be held from January 5th to 26th, 2021 but it has been cancelled this year. However, the daffodils are still blooming around this time in Suisen-no-Sato Park. This event has been selected as one of the "100 best scented landscapes" by the Ministry of the Environment.

Even though you missed it this time, please remember the event and enjoy beautiful daffodils and landscapes if you visit Nagasaki in January.

And also, you might be able to meet Suisen Man(Daffodil Man), the local unofficial hero!😄

【Local Speciality Food: Toruko Rice】

Have you heard of “Toruko Rice” in Nagasaki? It’s one of Nagasaki’s specialties which literally means Turkish rice, but is not a Turkish food.

There are many different varieties of “Toruko Rice” in Nagasaki but it’s basically pilaf, spaghetti Napolitana(Japanese style pasta with tomato sauce and veggies), and Tonkatsu( Japanese deep fried breaded pork cutlet) with salad on one plate. Tonkatsu can be beef steak, croquette, hamburger steak etc. and combinations on the plate vary on the menu.

It’s local Nagasaki food that was influenced by western culture. But Toruko Rice cannot be found in Turkey.(Turkey is an islamic country, they don’t eat pork first of all)

How did it get the name “Toruko(Turkish) Rice”?

There are various theories such as:

・Because it’s based on pilaf which is a Turkish rice dish
・The name of the dish was taken from the menu of Restaurant Turkey(Toruko), and later spread to other restaurants.
・ The word "tricolor," meaning three colors was corrupted to become “Turkey(Toruko)” in Japanese.
・ Because pilaf or fried rice refers to Asia, and Spaghetti refers to Europe and “Turkey” is located in between.

Nagasaki has a lot of mixtures of Asian and Western culture, it’s like the country Turkey. So it can be said that Nagasaki does have a connection with Turkey?

“Turuko Rice” could be one of the most representative dishes of Nagasaki's culture!
Why don’t you try it when you visit Nagasaki!

Do you know Miffy? Miffy is a Dutch artist Dick Bruna's best known and most popular character. It’s also popular in Japan.

Who loves Sushi or Sashimi? 🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️🐟❤️🍣

Nagasaki is one of the best places to eat fresh tasty fish in Japan.

The number of fish caught here is the second most in Japan following Hokkaido!
The abundance of fish species is actually the BEST in Japan!🗾It’s over 250 species!!! Wow!😲🐟

There are so many restaurants in Nagasaki if you want to eat local fresh fish.
They often offer the fish freshly caught in the morning!
Local people believe the fish taste good at any restaurants in Nagasaki.
But pictures show some restaurants' menu!

Try ”Nigiri (Sushi pieces)” and ”Kaisen-Don” (Sashimi fish bowls), and ”Nagasaki Tekka Maki”!😋

Nagasaki Tekka Maki is a unique local fish roll. Tekka Maki is a normally red Tuna roll, but Nagasaki one uses local chewy white fish!

We have many local good food in Nagasaki , but highly recommend to try Sushi or Sashimi to have seasonal fresh local fish when you visit Nagasaki!😊🍣

【Cancellation Announcement of the Nagasaki Lantern Festival 2021】

We regret to announce you that the Nagasaki Lantern Festival, originally scheduled for Feb 12th-26th, 2021, will be called off due to the spread of COVID-19...

The Covid-19 is spreading rapidly throughout the country, the city and the prefecture now, and since the event will be held in February, the coldest month of the year, it will be difficult to hold the event from the standpoint of safety even if thorough measures are taken to prevent the spread of the infection.

The event is representative of Nagasaki's winter season, and will encourage a large number of people from all over Japan to visit the city in a short period of time.

Efforts to prevent the spread of infection are required together with citizens and businesses, so Nagasaki city has decided the event's cancellation.

We hope that the things settle down and other events in Nagasaki will be held next year.

Season's Greetings!

Nagasaki Walks wishes you and your loved ones peace, health, happiness and prosperity in the coming New Year!

We do celebrate Christmas in Japan too, but in our tradition, we eat a roasted chicken/fried chicken (often KFC) and a Christmas cake! It doesn't matter if you are a Christian or not, it's treated as a secular celebration here.

However, there are many Christians and churches in Nagasaki comparing to other parts of Japan, the believers go to their churches for Christmas Mass or Worship to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

This year might have been tough but we hope that things turn to be normal and people can visit Nagasaki from all around the world again next year!

We appreciate all your support this year!

Best wishes,

Nagasaki Walks

【Tourist Spot: Suwa Shrine】

In Nagasaki, we have many temples and shrines but one of the major shrines in Nagasaki that is loved by locals and famous for tourists is Suwa Shrine.

The origins of Nagasaki’s Suwa Shrine could be 1500’s but it was first destroyed by Jesuits and was reestablished in 1625. Suwa Shrine consisted of the three shrines, the Suwa, the Sumiyoshi and the Morisaki.

You might be amazed by the number of steps to the main hall. You climb up nearly 200 steps and go through some giant Torii gates.
From the top, you can enjoy the spectacular view, and you will encounter the pair of the great Lion Dog statues, and many other statues and monuments. Suwa Shrine is the first place to offer O-mikuji(written oracle) in English so why don’t you draw one when you visit?

In addition, it is said that Suwa Shrine’s deities bring you good luck with matchmaking, business, maritime safety, and battles etc. You can discover many Shinto deities to pray to.

The shrine is famous as the starting point of the Nagasaki Kunchi Festival. It is held every October 7-9th having over 380 years of history. It’s one of the largest festivals in Japan, and local towns dedicate their performances to the deities.

What is the Kunchi Festival?

Nagasaki Walks offers a private Suwa Shrine walking tour with an English speaking local guide.

【Dinosaur Museum will be open in Nagasaki in October 2021!】

Do you like dinosaurs?

And do you also want to visit Nagasaki some day?

If so, here is some great news for you!

Nagasaki City Dinosaur Museum will be opening in the Nomozaki area in October 2021!

Nomozaki is a suburb of Nagasaki city and located in the southwestern peninsula of Nagasaki.

The place where the museum will be located is near Nomozaki General Athletic Park and Gunkanjima(Warship island) lookout point, so you can also enjoy the view of the sea, and the island and nature at the park. Nomozaki General Athletic Park is actually famous for it’s 10 million Daffodils which bloom in January!

Nagasaki city and Raiden city(the Netherlands) are sister cities, so that Trix, the whole 13m Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton(replica) from Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Raiden will be exhibited at Nagasaki city Dinosaur Museum. It’s going to be the first and only in the world to exhibit the replica of Trix!

One of the biggest reasons why the dinosaur museum will be opening in Nomozaki is that a layer of earth about 81 million years old was found and the fossils of different kinds of dinosaurs and pterosaurs were excavated in that area.
The main theme of the museum is to feature the dinosaurs found in Nagasaki city so that people can learn about the dinosaurs and the local history

It's still one year away, but we are looking forward to it!

【Another Japan Nagasaki】

Have you been to Nagasaki, Japan?

Nagasaki is located on the western end of Japan, close to South Korea and China.
It’s a popular tourist city in Japan and there are a number of sightseeing spots you can visit.

What makes Nagasaki very unique and attractive is the mixture of Chinese, Japanese and western culture through its history, many delicious foods and local specialities, as well as the beautiful scenery both day and night.
Of course, don’t forget the local people! People in Nagasaki are nice and friendly.

We have a nightlife area for eating and drinking, and we have some of the best city lights in Japan.

It’s not a big city like Tokyo, Osaka, or Kyoto. It’s a compact city, but this makes it easy to walk around.

We are waiting to welcome you to Nagasaki once the world returns to normal and you can start traveling to Japan!

【Local Food: Nagasaki Kakuni Manju】

Have you had a Kakuni Manju before?

“Kakuni Manju” or “Kakuni Man” is a type of steamed bun made with pork from the pig’s belly which is popular in Nagasaki as a local speciality.

Kakuni means “pork belly” in English which is slowly cooked in soy-sauce-based sauce.
It is soft and rich in taste, and melts in your mouth!

Kakuni is actually one of the dishes named “Dongpo pork” which came from China and is served in ''Shippoku Ryori'', the Nagasaki traditional course meal.
It became a handy local food served with a bun, so that people can have it as a snack or even for walking and eating on the street! The bun is nice and fluffy!

When you walk around the downtown area, especially near Chinatown, you can get Kakuni Manju at food stands or shops.

It’s also popular as a gift or souvenir from Nagasaki.

So would you like one when you visit Nagasaki?

【Nagasaki Maruyama Hanamatsuri】

Maruyama Hanamatsuri is an annual two-day festival of Umezono Migawari Tenmangu Shrine in Maruyama district and you can see geisha dance performances and an Oiran-dochu procession.

Maruyama district used to be formerly one of the three major geisha quarters in Japan, along with Edo Yoshiwara (present Tokyo) and Kyo Shimabara(current Kyoto) in the Edo era.

The Kemban office was formed to manage and connect between geisha and restaurants in the Meiji era(1868-1912) and they still manage and dispatch geishas to Japanese traditional restaurants in Nagasaki city even in the present day. Nagasaki city also preserves a traditional geisha industry as does Kyoto.

When you come to see the festival, you can see the performance of the currently active geishas and feel the historical Maruyama atmosphere.

Maruyama Hanamatsuri will be held on Nov 7th and 8th this year.

Unfortunately, the popular Oiran-dochu procession on Nov 8th was cancelled due to the corona pandemic...

However, good news is that you can watch the Oiran-dochu procession on YouTube instead of going to Nagasaki city. Even though you are not in Nagasaki/Japan, you can enjoy the traditional Oiran-dochu procession!
