Kanakuri Shisou is one of the most famous marathon runners from Kumamoto. He was born August 20th 1891, in Tamana. He discovered marathon running when he was in university, and he set a top record.
He participated in the Olympics three times, the Stockholm Olympics, the Antwerp Olympics, and the Paris Olympics. The Stockholm Olympics was a harsh race, so he retired from the event.
In the Antwerp Olympics, everyone expected him to win, but he placed in 16th place. In the Paris Olympics he was already 33 years old, and he retired from the event. So, he is known as an unfortunate Olympic runner.
After that, he felt that he needed to spread sports in Japan.
He put special effort into women’s physical education such as tennis. Also, he ran all over Japan to spread the sport and he invented the “Kanakuri tabi”, the origin of Japanese running shoes.
He tried his best at marathon events in his hometown.
He was selected as a Person of Cultural Merit, and was chosen as an honorary citizen in Tamana.
He continued to tell children and citizens about the joy of running.
He couldn't score a good record, but he did his best to lay the foundation for Japanese sports.

【Influential People from Kumamoto 9 Futa Yasunosuke】
by Kenshin Yonemura from Kumamoto Prefectural Uto Junior High School

Futa Yasunosuke was a Soshoya, a village headman, of Yabe Tenaga in Yamato-cho and an enterprising person. In particular, he built the Tsujunkyo Bridge - an aqueduct that irrigated the wasteland of Shiraito Plateau. For his great achievements, he was later enshrined and is still respected by many people.
Futa was a man who gave first priority to the people in the village. He made a strong effort to enrich the life of the villagers. Born in Yabe in 1801, Futa received money at the age of 30 for reclaimed land and was appointed a village headman at the age of 32 and was rewarded at the age of 34 when there was no famine in his area during the Great Tempo Famine that spread throughout Japan. However, there was an area called Shiraito in the Yabe region. Although there were three rivers around it, the valley was so deep that they had no choice but to depend on rainwater and snowmelt, which dried up the wells and made it almost impossible to grow crops. One summer day, when Futa and his men came to patrol in Shiraito, they saw the thirsty plateau, the weak villagers, and the children whose routine was to carry water. As long as there was water, "the children could learn to focus on their studies," he thought. Even after his retirement, he continued to walk a long time on the way to make his rounds and to care about the welfare of villagers.
Not giving in to any difficulty and with his strong will, he argued with others and got public cooperation. A large stone bridge was completed in a neighboring village, and he thought about if a bridge like that could be built in Shiraito to carry water to higher ground. He persuaded the stonemasons, but he was turned down to build a special bridge many times. There were many failures during construction. After they finished laying out the stones, they tried running water through them and found that they leaked. The construction was done by carpenters, stonemasons, and a large number of people from the Shiraito Plateau and Yabe areas.
He started construction of Tsujunkyo Bridge at age 52 and completed it at age 54. He served as village headman until age 61. First year of the Meiji era (1868) he was given a bonus from, the Hosokawa clan, for his work on the Tsujunkyo Bridge.
The Tsujunkyo Bridge proposed by Futa Yasunosuke is still used as an aqueduct and is visited by elementary school students in Kumamoto as a study tour. Water is discharged once a day, and many tourists come to see it. The Hassaku Festival is held every September, so be sure to visit and feel how people at that time appreciated the bridge!

【Influential People from Kumamoto 8 Lafcadio Hearn】
by Aoi Uchida from Kumamoto Prefectural Uto Junior High School

Lafcadio Hearn studied Japanese culture and introduced it to the West. He was influenced by Japanese books and resolved to visit Japan. Later, he came to love Japanese culture and studied it.

Hearn studied Japanese culture because he was interested in it very much and wanted to understand it. Hearn came to Japan as a teacher and spread Japanese culture to the West. He is the man who spread the Japanese word “tsunami” to foreign countries.

Also, as a writer, he produced around thirty works. He wrote some books about Japan, for example, Miminashi Hoichi, Yuki onna, and so on. They are very famous. He moved to Kumamoto City to teach English at a high school. He wrote books while working. The books that were written by him are loved by the world even now.

Hearn studied Japanese cultures for a long time. Now we have to understand and learn about different cultures like him. This is his old house. He lived in the house with his wife Setsu for 1 year. It is in Kumamoto City. We can study his life there. Admission is free of charge. Please try to go there.

【Influential People from Kumamoto 7 Shiso Kanakuri】
by Momoko Tokunaga from Kumamoto Prefectural Tamana Junior High School Attached to Tamana High School

I’m going to introduce about Shiso Kanakuri.
Do you know him? He is the first Japanese runner who participated in the Olympics in 1912. Surprisingly, he ran 250,000 kilometers in his lifetime.
He was born in Nagomi town, Kumamoto prefecture in 1891. He was a weak child. But he ran 12 kilometers with his friends every day to go to elementary school. Then, he learned how to breathe better and was able to run faster.
When he was a university student, he was able to participate in the Stockholm Olympics. He participated in the Olympics three times. But he couldn’t get good results because of climate or food changes.
After that, he tried to make Western-style marathon shoes. The bottoms of his shoes are made of rubber.
Also, he has been selected the focus of historical drama. His words “Strength, Energy, Effort” have influenced many people. There are statues of him and his museums in Tamana city. We can see various photos of him and his actual house.
Shiso Kanakuri is a famous marathon runner from Kumamoto prefecture. I think he is still respected by many people today because he cherished the spirit of “Strength, Energy, Effort”. I want to have a spirit like him and work hard for my dreams.
Please visit his museum when you come to Kumamoto prefecture. Thank you for reading!

【Influential People from Kumamoto 6 Lafcadio Hearn 】
by Tomoyoshi Nakagawa from Kumamoto Prefectural Tamana Technical High School

Lafcadio Hearn (Japanese name: Koizumi Yakumo, 1850-1904) was a writer who helped connect different cultures through his writings. He was born in Greece, grew up in Ireland, moved to England, then the USA, which is when he was transferred to Japan as a journalist in 1890. He eventually became a professor at the University of Tokyo because he fell in love with Japanese culture and literature.
He had visited many places around Japan. He had lived in Kumamoto for three years in 1891 and started teaching English at Kumamoto Daigo High School (Presently Kumamoto University). His experience in Kumamoto had a great influence on the books he published. He used a pen name, Koizumi Yakumo, while he wrote about Japanese stories and traditions.
He published famous books like "Kwaidan" and "Glimpse of Unfamiliar Japan". These stories introduced western countries to unbelievably strange things about Japan, Japanese ghost stories, and traditional customs. His books helped western people understand and appreciate Japanese culture better. His descriptions inspired many writers and artists with the beauty of Japanese life and traditions.
I would recommend to anyone visiting Kumamoto to visit “Lafcadio Hearn’s Former Residence” located in Kumamoto City. This house was where he actually lived when he first came to Kumamoto. I visited here once and remember finding it interesting because of all the details of Hearn’s life. It is said that the garden surrounding his residence was his favorite place. Following Hearn’s footsteps, this valuable place is where you can experience his perspective, interesting stories and cultural heritage. There are also great shops and restaurants with local food along the nearby street. I hope you’ll visit here when you come to Kumamoto.

【Influential People from Kumamoto 5 Kato Kiyomasa】
by Haruto Moriya from Kumamoto Prefectural Kumamoto Commercial High School

Kato Kiyomasa was born in Aichi Prefecture in 1562. He governed Kumamoto in the late 16th and 17th centuries. Kiyomasa was known for his achievements in both battle and architecture. Among them, Kumamoto Castle is especially famous. It is considered one of the three best castles in Japan, partially for its impenetrable castle walls. During the end of the Edo period, the Satsuma rebellion broke out, and the local government forces relied on the fortifications of Kumamoto Castle to survive. Because of Kiyomasa's clever design, the rebels couldn't take the castle and were defeated by government reinforcements.
After the rebels were defeated, the rebel general was quoted saying, "The Meiji government did not defeat me. I was defeated by Kato Kiyomasa, who built this impenetrable castle."
During the shogun's campaign in Korea, Kiyomasa and his men faced starvation time and time again. After becoming the lord of Kumamoto, Kiyomasa focused greatly on increasing the castle's defensive capabilities and improving the area's agriculture through a series of irrigation canals. These canals worked as flood control and also as land reclamation tools. Through the canals and other infrastructure developments, Kumamoto quickly grew into a prosperous land.
If you visit Kumamoto, please visit Kumamoto Castle and the statue of Kato Kiyomasa.

【Influential People from Kumamoto 3 Yasunosuke Futa】
by Mia from Kumamoto Prefectural Kita High School

About 200 years ago, Yasunosuke Futa helped hundreds of people during a serious water shortage by constructing Tsujun bridge. Located on the Shiraito plateau, his village was troubled by a serious water shortage. In 1818, when he was seventeen, he decided to construct an aqueduct to bring water to the Shiraito plateau. After hundreds of hours, finally the Tsujun bridge was completed in 1854. Thanks to him, many villagers got a stable supply of water. Then, one after another, rice paddies were made. The Tsujun Bridge is still used today as a bridge for agricultural purposes. From the front, the stone wall widens at the base. The Taneyama stonemasons used the same building technology used to support Kumamoto Castle. This technique is called musya-gaeshi. Inside the Tsujun bridge are three pipes that allow water to flow through. Water is periodically released to remove stones and leaves that have collected inside. If you come to Kumamoto, please come and see this dynamic discharge of water from the Tsujun Bridge.

【Influential People from Kumamoto 2 Yoh Shomei】
by Koharu Yano from Kumamoto Prefectural Daiichi High School

Yoh Shomei is a picture book author, painter, and poet representing Japan. His paintings actually have a big connection with A*o in Kumamoto Prefecture.
Yoh Shomei was born on July 7, 1946 in Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture. After graduating from high school in Kumamoto, he entered the University of Tokyo, and then an art school also in Tokyo. After that, he studied oil painting at an art school in New York.
His pictures are strongly influenced by the grasslands of A*o. A*o is located in the northern part of Kumamoto Prefecture, and has one of the most famous calderas in the world. In A*o, you can enjoy blue skies, green grasslands and mountains from spring to summer, and in autumn you can enjoy the sea of clouds and the golden pampas grass. I recommend touring and hiking the caldera. There is also the A*o Kogen Picture Book Museum, where you can enjoy Yoh Shomei’s works in the great nature of A*o.
I hope you will read his book and visit A*o.
