Love to wake up on a Sunday morning and find my favourite maple tree like this. It's been snowing solidly for over a week now, curious to see how it'll affect the Cherry blossoms.

Some pics from Shosei-en gardens. Just a short walk away from Kyoto Station (you can see the UFO parking tower in the background), a top spot to get away from the crowds for a while.

Some more photos of Kiyomizudera, Kyoto last week. The autumn colours were delayed this year due to the long dry summer; the leaves as a result are a bit dryer and less vivid than usual but looking spectacular none the less!

This is Gunkan Jima – Battleship Island is an abandoned island near Nagasaki. The whole island is around 480m long and during its peak was the most densely populated spot on earth.

Coal had been discovered under the island back in around 1810 but without the tech and knowhow required, little was extracted until in 1890 with Mitsubishi took over. As the volume of coal taken out increased the population grew peaking in around 1960 when there were 5300 people crammed on the island, 6 times the density of Tokyo, this included whole families, kids and all. The burgeoning population on such a small space had been a head scratcher from the beginning for the management until in 1916, following a trip to New York and seeing how building upwards using concrete could be the solution. Management returned to Japan and decided to start building multi-levelled reinforced concrete buildings, the first in Japan.

As with all mines, the conditions underground were dangerous and, well, unpleasant at best. The miners were well paid however, three times we were told, of what the average salary was on the mainland. The coal extracted powered the industrial revolution in Japan until oil became a more practical source of power in the early 1970s. The island population decreased, the final residents left in 1974 as the plant was closed and has been left to the elements ever since.

In 2015 it became a World Heritage Site and today we can visit by joining one of the boat tours from Nagasaki.
