Myoko Snow Report
17 January 2025

There’s been a bit more snow since last night. Falling fairly consistently from what I can see via our Myoko webcams and Madarao webcams, going right down the valley to Lake Nojiri. It’s light snow mostly in Madarao/Myoko but coming down hard at Arai. Writing this before sunrise, so no real idea of what the resorts will report. Probably anywhere between 10-25cm I expect around the bases. More up high. Snow clearing going full pelt as usual. All hail the indefatigable clearing crews.

As previously suggested, going off piste is quite dangerous ATM. Ski within your limits and stay within bounds for the moment. Today will likely be the last big snow for a few days. Going forward over the next week appears to bring a mixture of sun, cloud, occasional light snowfall and maybe even a few spots of rain. A real mixed bag. That said, I would not be surprised if there’s another decent dump out of nowhere.

Will be a fun night tomorrow night at the Dynamite Festival in Suginohara. Check with your Myoko accommodation provider re access if you haven’t already.

Myoko Snow Report
16 Jan 2025

Snow has been huge, with falls right down to the coast. In were reporting 104cm in 24 hours (although 'officially' 60cm). Seki Onsen also reported 100cm whilst Ikenotaira reported 70cm. Layer upon layer of white fluffy stuff is fun for the hardcore. Not so much for the regular punters maybe, or the poor schmucks who have to clear it. So have fun, but be careful.

Which leads us to safety concerns. Going off piste is quite dangerous ATM. There have been folk having to be rescued in Suginohara and Arai whilst unfortunately there's been a death in Yuzawa. These are just incidents that have come across my desk. Quite likely to be a few more. Ski within your limits and stay within bounds for the moment.

On the bright side, the Akakura Onsen dondoyaki was a big hit last night and we've got the Dynamite Festival at Suginohara coming too. Make sure to rug up well. It was bitterly cold last night.

Looking forward it will be a fairly quiet day with cloud and a bit of snow before a bit more snow rolls in tonight and continues through most of tomorrow. Not huge numbers supposedly, but who can tell in this season!

Myoko Snow Report
12 January 2025

Not much to report today. Most resorts seem to be reporting zero snowfall. Temps are very cold though, so would’ve kept the snow in pretty good condition. My thermometer is reading -3°, whilst it’s -8° in the carpark at Suginohara and -4° at Madarao base. Roads are really icy so take extra driving and walking around. Mixture of sun/cloud in the morning and possibly some light falls in the afternoon.

Wednesday seems to be when the next big dump is coming. Over the next week or so it will pretty much snow every day but that will be interspersed with cloudy periods, sometimes clear skies, a bit of bluebird, but cold temperatures. So no rain, at least on the slopes. It’s a holiday weekend in Japan so expect it to be quite busy on first lifts/gondola. Once you’re up the mountain things should be easier.

Somebody asked me yesterday exactly where I am based. Please, people, this how stalking starts. Let's just say I'm omnipresent, like Ullr - the Norse/Prussian snow god.

Myoko Snow Report
11 January 2025

I'm writing this very early as I've sort've given up on this 'trying to sleep' thing. I think the cold meds were just relabelled triple Red Bulls. So at 4am I'm looking out the window and have no real idea of what sort of depths we've got over the last 24 hours. One thing for sure, it wasn't anywhere near the catastrophe that JMA thought. Or maybe it was the hackers getting into their site again (true story, tenki.jp was subject to a Ddos and went offline yesterday).

One other problem is that the snowfalls are all over the shop. Just driving down to the coast yesterday and back again was an exercise in seasons. It snowed, it was sunny and then was thunder, lighting and heavy graupel falls in Joetsu. On the slopes it seems most punters were happy with quality of snow, so that's the important thing, hey? By the time the various resort staff stumble into their offices in another 2-3 hours I imagine we're going to start seeing reports of anywhere between 10-30cm. I could be wrong. It's a best guesstimate.

Over the next week or so it will pretty much snow every day but that will be interspersed with cloudy periods, sometimes clear skies, a bit of bluebird, but cold temperatures. So no rain, at least on the slopes.

Note, I hope this all sounds lucid. I've been constantly distracted by the snowplough going up and down the street, and them not doing, at least to me, a bang up job to say the least. I'll have to get out later and shift the pile they left in front of my door. I can't do it now because my neighbours are, quite sensibly I would say, at sleep. I will maybe one day tell the story of my annoying former neighbour in Akakura who didn’t have such qualms.

Also have some pics, some media, some inside intel that you’d like to share? We love receiving contributions, so make sure to tag/message or on your socials. This morning's video is from .mitsunobu, local Akakura legend.

Really brief report as I drag myself off my death bed to write this.

Some of the really big numbers didn't come in because of wind direction. Hakuba seems to be getting the really big falls, whilst those resorts closer to coast, like Arai and Charmant have copped 30cm.

Still, like yesterday, it will be a great day on the slopes. Video today is from Japan-Skier over on Bluesky who was Alpenblick Ikenotaira yesterday. You can also find us there too at https://bsky.app/profile/myokokogen.bsky.social

Evening report 9 Jan 2025

Quick heads up everyone. Things are getting serious between around now till this time tomorrow in the area.

The expected snowfall in the 24 hours from 6pm on January 9th to 6pm on the 10th is for 70cm in the mountain areas (more at higher level) and 30cm on the plains. Transportation may be affected, so check before heading to the station or coming from elsewhere.

Don't, REPEAT DON'T, head OOB or BC tomorrow. There will be ample fresh stuff inbounds to have a great day. I'll have more in the morning report tomorrow.

Myoko Snow Report
9 January 2025

My cold isn’t any better. Not much fun when the snow is howling down outside and you need to go clear it. Even the drugs are not much fun. Did you know that a local remedy for a cold is to put a raw egg in warm sake, then drink it? Honest to God, I’m not lying. Many locals swear by it. Some even give it to their kids. My theory is that your cold is not any better, you just feel much happier.

I'm writing this very early as I couldn't sleep so I have no idea how much the resorts will report this morning. Probably 20cm. Might try to update later if I'm not back in bed.

Otherwise, we are shaping up for a couple of big days with the coldest front of the season coming through with the JPCZ off the coast, which is a 1000km long atmospheric river-like cloud zone that forms when Siberian cold air flows over the warm Japan Sea. As it stands they're forecasting maybe 50cm around base level up to this evening and then another 70cm overnight AND THEN another 40cm on Friday. Crazy, hey?

Myoko Snow Report
8 January 2025

Well, I’ve also woken up with a rotten cold, something which is quite prevalent in Japan this winter. Make sure you stay warm, wash your hands, wear a mask inside your accommodation and stay stocked up with the appropriate meds. Don’t say Uncle Myoko Guy didn’t warn you.

Otherwise, the snowfall has been a bit underwhelming as the cold front moves in with only 20 cm overnight. Still 20 cm makes for a great day on the slopes, whilst 40 or 60 can be actually quite hard.

The cold front will be sticking around for another couple of days or so. So things might ramp up from here or it could be a bit of a fizzer. I still think we’re going to see quite a bit of snow over those days. Maybe just not the catastrophe I thought it might be. Which, TBH, is a good outcome. Today snow should fall fairly consistently. Possibly some sun peeking through mid-morning.

Also have some pics, some media, some inside intel that you’d like to share? We love receiving contributions, so make sure to tag/message or on your socials. Wasn't much snow over the last two days but still had some good runs at Arai.

Myoko Snow Report
Mid-January Forecast (6-14 January 2025)

Apologies, meant to do this last night but life got in the way, viz, my mum says I need to get out of my room spend more time with the family. Not much to report since yesterday so I'll nip straight into the forward forecast. Been sitting on this for a bit to see how things develop. As usual there are some contrasting views on what will develop over the next 7-10 days.

The problem, as an average punter with no specialised weather training, is this. I have to balance the western style forecast frothers who label that everything is 'gonna be epic' versus the more subdued Japanese resort forecasters who tend to underplay things because, believe or not, too much snow might scare the local punters away. I've lost count of the times I've looked out my window and seen 30-60cm of snow and the resorts are calling it at 20cm (or less). Or western owned lodges getting pi**ed off because I'm talking about ice sheets on the slopes. So I scan across a variety of sources but tend to place most faith in local news and local knowledge.

Here's how I'm reading it - the next, very cold front of around -36°C (around 5,500m) will move south later tomorrow, or early on the 8th. By 10th Jan the temperatures will still be hovering 40°C as they approach the Japan Sea coast. The logical outcome of this means we should have some quite heavy snowfalls, really heavy. This could be anywhere between 100-200cm falling on Myoko/Shiga/Madarao/Nozawa.

If this does occur it will be very dangerous in the mountains with raised avalanche conditions. It could actually reach catastrophic levels, esp. if it spreads past the region and into/near Tokyo. This would lead to trains stopping and highways/roads closing. If you are coming in or out of the region at this time you would do well to check your travel insurance and have a Plan B in place.

But wait, there's more! For the rest of the report please head to https://myokosnowreport.com/

Myoko Snow Report
5 January 2025

Sorry that reports have been sporadic. It’s peak travel season here in Myoko and Madarao and the madding hordes are filtering out today to the Tokyo conurbation and beyond. It will be a quick report today (and late - taking forever to upload this video). It’s a beautiful bluebird day in the hood. Very cold overnight (it was -10 at Suginohara and I had my electric blanket turned up to 11) with very little snow reported. Great base all around with over 4m already at Arai and Charmant.

There’s some big incoming snowfalls. I’m going to cover that in a separate report tonight. Stay tuned, set your alarms, etc. You will be able to check out conditions and views via our Myoko webcams and Madarao webcams.

Myoko Snow Report
2 January 2025

Early morning here and the sun hasn’t come up yet so not much in the way of visuals to see what’s happening. Looking at the Myoko and Madarao webcams there’s a bit of rain around the valley, some snowfall at Arai as well as light falls on the upper reaches of Suginohara plus, perhaps a little bizarrely, there’s a bit coming down at Lake Nojiri.

So I expect today there will be mixed conditions and probably not too much snow, maybe a bit in the afternoon. Might also be a little bit of rain on the lower slopes. Tomorrow and Saturday we should get some more half decent falls and then another lean period. Not sure I’m a big believer in the hyped MW forecast that’s being shared around. I guess we’ll see. There’s a chance of a super mega dump (see possible disaster) in mid-January as arctic cold air pushes down and we’ll be keeping a close eye on that one.

You will be able to check out conditions and views via our Myoko webcams and Madarao webcams.

Myoko Snow Report 1 January 2025

Welcome to 2025 everyone. Hope everyone had a good NYE and fun dawn ski. This morning's vision is of first tracks at Suginohara (https://myokosuginohara.com) via .

Will make this quick. We’ve had about 20cm of snow since yesterday and it’s been a little bit on the heavier side, not the light fluffy stuff so much. Otherwise we’ve had a bit of everything - wind, light rain and sun. I was a bit surprised this morning as I expected things to be a bit more cloudy/foggy. But conditions were quite clear for the dawn ski this morning. Still a bit of light snow coming every now and then. That will be pretty much the story for today and tomorrow with mixed conditions and probably not too much snow.

Friday and Saturday we should get some more half decent falls and then another lean period. Not sure I’m a big believer in the hyped MW forecast. I guess we’ll see. There’s a chance of a super mega dump (see possible disaster) in mid-January as arctic cold air pushes down and we’ll beekeeping a close eye on that one.

Myoko Snow Report 31 December 2024

So here we are, another year of our mortal coil signed off and closer to our demise. Never mind there are the NY parties in Akakura, the midnight skiing and fireworks in Madarao and the dawn skiing at Akakan and Suginohara. Pack up your troubles in your old ski bag and smile, smile, smile.

After that slightly sombre beginning, how good was it yesterday right across the resorts? Blue skies and primo conditions. Days we are put on earth for.

No snow yesterday, apart from a smattering across the top of the ranges last night and this morning. Snow will continue on and off for the next few days, although we might even get a spot of rain today around the base of some resorts. Not too much to worry about really, especially if you are up high.

See you in 2025!

Myoko Snow Report 30 December 2024

Well, Sunday was pretty much a repeat of Saturday with a cold day and then some heavy snow between about 2-6pm. The snow had mostly ceased down in the valley by the evening, but looking on the cams there was still some light snow falling before I hit the hay. I haven’t got the cumulative records from the resorts yet as it’s too early for them to have put up numbers but I’m guessing around 30-40cm on average. Could be some big variations though, as there was on Saturday.

Conditions are forecast to moderate today, maybe even some blue sky, but then a big dump is likely from late on 2 Jan on. Might see a little bit of mixed rain/hail snow tomorrow on New Years Eve.

Myoko Snow Report 29 December 2024

It’s not often that we call 30-40cm a ‘fizzer’ but that’s pretty much the case this weekend. We were expecting a mega-dump but it hasn’t ended up anywhere near that for most of the resorts. The exceptions were Arai (reporting 57cm) and Seki Onsen (reporting a non believable 100cm). Most of the falls came yesterday between about 2-6pm.

Looking at some socials I thought the wind had directed a lot of the big snow from around the coast and dumped it on the Hakuba resorts. But then I see reports of only 15-30cm. A real head scratcher. Falls seem to have been really localised.

So the positive is that my man servant has less snow clearing to do, and that conditions will still be awesome today. Because, TBH 30cm is a lot more fun, and a lot safer, than 80cm. We may have some more big falls today, but who knows? Conditions are forecast to moderate from tomorrow, maybe even some blue ski, but then a big dump is likely from late on 2 Jan on. Might see a little bit of mixed rain/hail snow on New Years Day.

Myoko Snow Report

Are you looking for the latest Myoko Weather information or the Myoko Snow Report? Keep up with all the forecast snow information for the MyokoKogen ski resorts via our webpages and social media.

Myoko Snow Reports run from the start of the first snow around mid-November and continue after until the last lifts close in early May (at Seki Onsen, Akakura Kanko and Lotte Arai). Generally January and February are the best months for skiing in Myoko Kogen although it’s not unusual to have awesome powder conditions in December or March, or even April!
