La Nina Japan 2025 Winter Our first forecast update for 2024/25 season in Myoko Kogen is up. It's the heat of summer here, but still time to crack out the crystal ball and see what the long term snow forecast could be for this 2024/25 season in Myoko and surrounding areas with La Niña Japan 2025! Typically, during La Niña years, Japan experiences cooler and wetter conditions in winter, which can influence weather patterns and potentially affect, apart from the ski industry - agriculture, fisheries and even societal activities. However, the exact nature and intensity of these impacts can vary from year to year and area to area. Flinders Street Train Station Report After the slow sad decline of season 23/24* we thought, for a laugh, we'd introduce Laurence Hewson doing his thing in Melbourne. Next season will be better. There are never two poor seasons in a row in Myoko. Not even during the rice famine of 1863-1865 that forced the closure of all local combinis. We'll hopefully have a season forecast in September or October from the JMA, but are already hearing rumours of a La Nina event. Snow updates should resume sometime in early to mid November. Myoko Snow Report 25th March 2024 Not much to report on TBH. We've had some very warm days with more coming up, even some rain. No decent falls that I can see in the next week at least. There's still quite reasonable depth at most resorts, but otherwise they are pretty gasping towards the finish line now (see below). Myoko Snow Report 13 March 2024 March is the time in Myoko where the locals finally start to get a bit of breathing space after a long slog of snow clearing times. Well, Mother Nature is being a bit cruel this year as we face yet another huge dump. One of my lodge contacts has reported 43cm! I’m just waiting for all the resorts to update and they’re taking their sweet time. @SekiOnsen has reported 40cm+, 20cm at Arai and @MadaraoKogen 30cm. So if you’re waxing up and still deciding, then those places are a decent bet today. I should hopefully have depths and temps up by around 9.30am JST at our web page listed below. Myoko Snow Report 12th March 2024 Was a beautiful bluebird day here yesterday. A cold night had kept the piste in good condition but it did get a bit claggy in the afternoon as the day warmed up. Overnight it’s been quite warm although it looks like it’s still stayed below zero degrees on the mid to upper slopes. With no fresh snow yesterday and warmer temps conditions won’t be quite as nice - but good for some relaxed cruisey runs nonetheless. Things will cool down tonight and we’ll be looking at another small dump going into Wednesday - maybe 15-20cm. SF is saying 40cm. I hope they're right and I'm wrong! Late Myoko Snow Report 10 March 2024 Another good dump overnight with another 20-40cm across most resorts, leading to a great day on the slopes. @ross.saiko.channel was certainly enjoying himself at Arai today. Monday and Tuesday will be a little bit warm before some more snow arrives after lunch on Tuesday, lasting through to Wednesday. Maybe 20cm+. March keeps delivering! Myoko Snow Report 7th March 2024 We’ve had a pretty good few days and there’s still some light snow coming in this morning. Not a whole lot fell yesterday. The most was 10cm at Seki Onsen who have maintained a base of 280cm and temperature of -3° for several weeks now. Talk about consistency! We’re into the last 2-3 weeks for some resorts already. You can find all the dates via @myokoskiresort. Conditions should be great out on the hill today. Most lifts will likely be operating today but Mitahara course is still closed at Suginohara. It’s pretty much going to keep snowing on and off up until Sunday. Nothing exceptional but certainly enough to keep things interesting. Monday/Tuesday gets a little bit warm, nothing too drastic, before the northerlies should kick back in again on Wednesday. Myoko Snow Report 4th March 2024 It was a great day on the hill yesterday. We started with a bluebird day before some cloud cover came in later, and then last night, the snow started coming in again. I haven’t seen the resort levels yet this morning but my gut feeling is that Arai, Charmant, Cupid Valley and likely Seki Onsen (where the snow was absolutely pounding down at 7pm last night) probably have done a bit better than resorts further up the valley. I'll be updating depths about 9.30am (JST) after all the resorts have updated (some can be tardy). Most lifts will likely be operating but some courses are still closed at Suginohara.. It’s pretty much going to keep snowing on and off between here and Friday. Nothing like we saw on Friday but certainly enough to keep things interesting. Myoko Snow Report: 27 February 2024 Sorry, report is not posting today. Been trying for the last couple of hours. Interweb glitches. Hope it posts now. @brodiewmarr reliably tells us that there was at least 10cm on the ground at Akakura Kanko yesterday morning, despite them reporting 0cm. It snowed hard all morning at Akakura Onsen, albeit wet and heavy, but then turned light and fluffy in the afternoon. Others in Madarao reported 30cm at least at the base and knee deep in the trees. The snow has kept up overnight so will be interesting and there's been disparate snow recordings at the resorts. For example 10cm at Akakura but 30cm at Akakura Kanko. Whilst just below those resorts a friend recorded 48cm at their lodge! The further good news is that the snow forecast window has been extended out to early tomorrow morning. So we should get at least another 20cm or so by then. The winds are still heading in the right direction until tomorrow evening, so just need to keep getting enough moisture picked up over the Sea of Japan for some bonus freshies. Myoko Snow Report 26 February 2024 The good news this morning is that it’s snowing. However, the reported falls from the resorts is a bit disparate. Some, like Seki Onsen and Charmant have reported decent falls (20cm), Tangram 15cm (and don’t they need it!) down to 0cm at Akakura Kanko and Kurohime. The winds have turned around in the right direction for the next day or so and that will hopefully bring another 20-30cm over the next 36 hours. It’s cold enough for some snow, but not Feb-like cold, so that will likely limit a really decent dump. And it’s raining further down the valley. Resort updates Arai has reported that there is a lot of hard crust, avalanche debris and cracks under the fresh snow. So take care in the free riding zone. Suginohara have said the following courses are closed due to lack of snow. ・Super Giant Course 38° portion ・Family R course (partial) If you’re out and about on the slopes, don’t forget to tag us at @myokosnowreport! Myoko Snow Report 14 February 2024 Happy Valentines Day. It was a good day on the mountain yesterday although, as expected, things got a bit slushy in the afternoon. On the positive side it won’t get as warm as initially forecast. They were talking temps of up to 12 degrees but that has been cut down into single figures of 7° to 9° today and tomorrow. However it was unseasonably warm overnight with resorts barely cracking below the zero mark. So even the groomers will be a bit soft this morning. Myoko Snow Report 13 February 2024 It's a bluebird day here after a stunning sunrise. We’ve had a great run over the last few days with fresh snow and excellent conditions. However it’s going to get a bit icky between today and Friday with some abnormally high temps. Don’t get your ukuleles and Hawaiian shirts out just yet. Today will not be so bad. It’s been a cold clear night and so the pistes will be in good condition. However it will warm up to 7° by early afternoon and that will make everything a bit soft. Then we’ll get up to 10° tomorrow and Thursday before another cold front sweeps in on Friday with 10-20cm of snow. Myoko Snow Report 11 February 2024 (PM) Well, I was wrong, but still a bit right. It looked to be slowing down at 4am before I signed off from the Mumbai Call Centre. But, either way, happy how today has turned out. I knew the numbers for Arai, Charmant, Cupid Valley and Seki would be good. 30-40cm at each and still falling. Numbers further up the valley about where I thought too - between 10-20cm. So those parts I got right. What I didn’t get right was the snowfall just to keep going past early morning when I thought the sun would come out. Quite the difference in fact. Although the falls have generally been confined to on-mountain rather than lower down. Nice to see a lucky break for Myoko. Conditions have been awesome on the mountain, but busy, as it’s a long weekend here. Snowfall should continue through now until tomorrow morning some time. That pesky warm front still looming (and now seemingly stretching into Friday) but fingers crossed. Also take care with road conditions which are very slippery. There was an accident on the road to Madarao this morning that blocked the road for a good while. As for the backcountry, be very, very careful as conditions have all risen to a ‘3’ with a combination of new snow and old snow. Myoko Snow Report 11 February 2024 Well, quite unexpectedly we’ve received a bit of snow overnight. It started snowing up top last night around 7PM and was quite heavy at the resorts down near the coast. Nothing down low before I slept last night so it will be interesting to see what numbers the resorts are reporting. I imagine 0cm on the report and 10-20cm up top. Probably around the time my hangover really kicks in. Nothing Boss Coffee and Pocari Sweat can’t fix though. Some people recommend Natto for hangovers. No thanks. Natto reminds me of my snot after a 5 day head cold. The snow is tailing off now anyway and the rest of the day will probably be similar to the great conditions yesterday. Myoko Snow Report 9 Feb. Yesterday was alright, hey? Not a heap of snow but the piste were in a good condition and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves. There's been a bit of a dusting up top of the resorts overnight. Not a whole lot though. I think today will be pretty much a carbon copy of yesterday, albeit probably a bit windier. Looking past a pretty warm looking next Tuesday and Wednesday (9°-11°), Friday could be shaping up for a pretty decent dump! Myoko Snow Report 8 February 2024 I’ve been pausing this morning. Waiting for the resorts to update and get a handle on what’s happening. Certainly a glorious start to the day with blue sky and high clouds, although there’s a bit more cloud cover moving in as I type. Discovering the paradox (again!) of some resorts that state that there was 0cm over the last 24 hours whilst clearly the snow gods blessed us with more during than that yesterday. And they seem to have a deeper base without any actual snow. Maybe it’s the Virgin Mary effect?* Who knows. Seki, Charmant and Cupid Valley all reported 10-15cm however. *Actually, I just made that up. But bang it in the lexicon now. All the cool kids will be saying it next year. With cold temps overnight, and the fresh stuff (that supposedly doesn’t exist) on top, the pistes will be in great condition. Bit more snow over the next few days but nothing huge. Temps will be quite cold so the piste should stay in good condition. Next Tuesday and Wednesday looks pretty warm (9°-11°) at this stage - but a lot can change over 6 days! As for the backcountry, just reiterating from yesterday, there's moving snow and slabs forming. It's getting warm pretty quickly up at Kanko and there was a small avi on the run out above Highland Lodge. There are large groups trying to ride all at the same time above the traverse and entry to the tunnel. Myoko Snow Report: 22nd February 2023 Enjoying our reports? Just buy me a coffee - https://www.buymeacoffee.com/myoko Well, here we are, AGAIN. We’ve been smashed by an incredible dump of 1 metre plus over 24 hours and then a warm front is moving in behind. The falls finally slowed down overnight and with the very cold temps the snow will be in awesome condition today, coupled with a bit of bluebird and moving clouds. Tomorrow warms up a bit, but not too much hopefully. Friday will be a little messy with some possible rainfall again. Then boom, probably another 30-40cm over the weekend. And, let’s go there, is this wildly fluctuating season an early harbinger of climate change in the resorts here? We can only hope not. If you’re heading off-piste or back country do take care, especially higher up, as the risk level is HIGH ATM. As usual you can check resort depths, temperatures and via the charts below.
