Myoko Snow Report 29 December 2024

It’s not often that we call 30-40cm a ‘fizzer’ but that’s pretty much the case this weekend. We were expecting a mega-dump but it hasn’t ended up anywhere near that for most of the resorts. The exceptions were Arai (reporting 57cm) and Seki Onsen (reporting a non believable 100cm). Most of the falls came yesterday between about 2-6pm.

Looking at some socials I thought the wind had directed a lot of the big snow from around the coast and dumped it on the Hakuba resorts. But then I see reports of only 15-30cm. A real head scratcher. Falls seem to have been really localised.

So the positive is that my man servant has less snow clearing to do, and that conditions will still be awesome today. Because, TBH 30cm is a lot more fun, and a lot safer, than 80cm. We may have some more big falls today, but who knows? Conditions are forecast to moderate from tomorrow, maybe even some blue ski, but then a big dump is likely from late on 2 Jan on. Might see a little bit of mixed rain/hail snow on New Years Day.

Also have some pics, some media, some inside intel that you’d like to share? We love receiving contributions, so make sure to tag/message or on your socials.

You will be able to check out conditions and views via our Myoko webcams and Madarao webcams and buy me a coffee while you do so. Just saying. https://buymeacoffee.com/myoko

Updated season outlook (English follows)

On December 24, 2024, the Niigata Regional Meteorological Observatory announced its three-month forecast for the Hokuriku region, including Myoko, from January to March of next year. As winter atmospheric pressure patterns are likely to strengthen in the first half of the period, precipitation and snowfall over the next three months are expected to be normal or above average. Meanwhile, temperatures in March are expected to be high, and spring is expected to arrive early.

The monthly forecast is as follows:

[January] Winter atmospheric pressure patterns tend to strengthen, resulting in more cloudy, snowy, or rainy days than average. Precipitation is average or higher than average. Temperatures are average or lower.
[February] Cloudy and snowy or rainy days are common, as in an average year. Precipitation and temperatures are roughly average.
[March] The weather changes every few days. Precipitation is about average. Temperatures are high.

Bottom line, it's going to be a full on January, a great February but visitors are probably unlikely to get a lot of powder days in March. However, there will be an excellent base and some great backcountry conditions.

Myoko Snow Report 28 December 2024

Sorry we didn't get around to a report yesterday. Big reason - there was too much snow to clear. By the time that was out of the way, then having to teach my yoga class before getting to a booked mani-pedi appointment, the day was gone. If it's any consolation, my inner chakra is feeling good this morning, or it might just be the three Red Bulls and hash cookie I had for breakfast. Yes, I love you all.

We had falls of 40cm by yesterday morning and then was up to another 50cm added since then. A lot more up higher I would imagine.

The forecast is something else for this weekend. The area is facing a very cold atmospheric pressure pattern with high pressure in the west and low pressure in the east. Where the isobars over the Sea of Japan are bending in an L-shape, winds are colliding, and snow clouds are developing and flowing in one after another in quick succession. A strong cold air mass with temperatures below -33°C is entering at an altitude of around 5,000m, which means we're seeing falls of heavy snow right down to the plains of Joetsu. Conditions will moderate from Monday but then another big dump is likely from 2 Jan on.

Now to some of the implications. For those with cars, be very careful driving in these conditions. For those wanting to head off-piste or backcountry - simply don't! There will be plenty of powder on-piste. Just wait a couple of days. Lastly trains coming from Nagano are only running to Kurohime (check https://www.shinanorailway.co.jp/) and trains from Naoetsu may also stop (check https://www.echigo-tokimeki.co.jp/). So, if you are heading in or out you may want to talk with your accommodation providers (see https://myoko.jp/stay/) if they can run you to another station or get you a taxi.

I'm exhausted just writing this, but off to snowblower land we go again, and again. Till tomorrow (maybe...). Please buy me a coffee - https://buymeacoffee.com/myoko/

Myoko Snow Report 26 December 2024

I have woozily awoken from my calorie induced Xmas stupor to see what the snow gods are bringing us today. Lifts have just started turning at most resorts as I type this. At present there is a lot of thick cloud but visibility seems pretty good down low on the slopes.

Yesterday it was all about the bluebird and fun turns on fresh snow. There's been nothing overnight, just a clear crisp sky that will keep the snow in great condition for today. Things will change further later in the day as yet another cold front moves in that will bring snow for the next three days at least. How much? Well, the forecasts are somewhat divergent - anywhere between 80cm - 150cm. Either way, it will be a lot.

Remember that we are only two weeks into the season so there will be a chance of glide cracks and unstable bases so be careful. You will be able to check out conditions and views via our Myoko webcams and Madarao webcams.

Myoko Snow Report 24 December 2024

Good morning everyone. It’s Xmas Eve, and there's no need to be afraid. Yes, it snowed again. Lots. No idea how much because I’m writing this before the sun has come up. Estimating somewhere between 30-50cm on the lower slopes, more up higher. Whichever resort you're at it will be a great day! I'll be updating more on the website about 10am (if I'm out of bed by then). It’s going to continue until later today, take a brief respite over Xmas, then crank up again. Definitely the best start to a season since about 2014/15 I think.

Big big Xmas thank you to Andi and Adrian who bought me coffees/sake yesterday. You guys rock! As you are the first donations for the season I hereby award you the privilege of messaging me anytime this season for resort hints. Scroll to the bottom of our report at https://myokosnowreport.com if you’d like to know more.

You'll also get to read a little Xmas poem that only a tired chu-hai ridden brain can conjur at 3am on a cold snowy Myoko winter morn.

Myoko Snow Report December 23, 2024

There’s lots of snow people. Lodge Tronco this morning reporting 37cm. If you’re in the area, stop looking at your phone and get out there.

Arai is still having all kinds of problems with lifts due to wind and other courses closed off due to avalanche risk and poor visibility. Be very careful out there. All other resorts seem to be operating normally, although some are still running with limited lifts. Snowfall will continue until later tomorrow. If you have a car the resorts are reminding people to be very careful on the roads

Myoko Snow Report 22 December 2024

Absolutely crazy night here. Lots of snowfall but lots of wind too and a bit of thunder. The walls were shaking at MSR corporate HQ. Resorts are reporting varied levels of new snow. 7cm at Arai up to 40cm at Madarao. The quality is variable though with a fair bit of icy/wet snow rather than nice powder so be careful out there and don’t stray out of bounds too far.

Most lifts are operating including the gondolas at Suginohara and Akakan but get the feeling that may change if the winds pick up any more. There are some problems at Arai though. The Zendana Lift and Gondola (between Nakama and Zendana Station) are suspended. The Gondola (to Roppongi Station), Kogenashi Lift, and Sanroku 1st and 2nd Lifts have had all their carriages removed. The situation may change after inspections.

Hi everyone, your intrepid reporter is back with the first full report of the season. Sorry if you’ve been waiting breathlessly for updates but I’ve been hit by a combination of lethargy and writer’s block, as well as a focus on other projects that actually help pay bills.*

First of all, we’ve had some decent snows. If anyone was wondering. Perhaps, wait a moment, even a bit more than decent. It’s been an awesome start to the season with all resorts firing up some lifts on time, some starting last weekend and the rest this coming weekend. Despite that, it was actually very much touch and go until almost the very last. Decent falls from last WED/THU prompted Suginohara to open at short notice last Friday and the others have been following.

Just will drop a note in here that the legendary Inoue-san of Seki Onsen sent me to remind me that lifts open there this Saturday at 9am. Make sure to get first runs!
Why aren’t more resort owners/managers more friendly/helpful like this? One of the deep mysteries of life in the snow country. And they have a new website too (sekionsen.jp) after the hamsters died at their last hosting company.

We’ve had a sunny bluebird Friday and a very cold couple of nights on THU/FRI making things a bit icy. Looking forward we should see snow rolling in from Saturday evening through till later on Tuesday. Not a huge dump but good to keep topping what is already some very good depth.

We will try to update reports as often as we can but we have a few other things on our plate this season such as renos at our new off mountain corporate HQ, replying to hordes of email during what is shaping up as the craziest season in Myoko since the bubble economy times, and maybe, just maybe even a lit bit of skiing.
Also have some pics, some media, some inside intel that you’d like to share? We love receiving contributions, so make sure to tag/message or on your socials.

Some real action coming to the Japan Alps, possibly starting tonight but definitely from tomorrow.

Whilst they missed out on the last big dump (which mainly benefited Hakuba) Myoko Kogen Nozawa Onsen, Myoko Ski Resort, Madarao Kogen and Shiga Kogen will all receive up to a metre of snow on their upper slopes, possibly more, between now and Monday. Quite a good possibility of snow right down to the coastline too in Joetsu Myoko.

You will be able to check out conditions and views via our Myoko webcams and Madarao webcams.

Myoko Snow Report
22 November 2024

Still a bit of snow hanging around Myoko with cold temperatures. Expecting another leg down in just over a week, around 1 or 2 December, where we should see some very nice falls. Fairly confident there will be a good base for the start of the season. Still a bit of free accommodation around at that time so a good opportunity for the late bookers.

Weather News JP forecasting a good season (esp. late Jan and early Feb) but still going to be plagued a bit by up and down temperatures. See: https://jp-weathernews-com.translate.goog/news/49828/?_x_tr_sl=ja&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=ja&_x_tr_pto=wapp

As forecast, the first decent snows of the season swept in this afternoon. It's reasonably heavy on the upper reaches of the slopes. Down in the valley it's a mixture of snow and rain right down to Lake Nojiri and Myoko Kogen Station. Expecting this to get a bit heavier during the night. Should end up with 10-20cm on the slopes and the keen people in the village to be up early to skin up. 😉⛷ It will get a little warmer after a couple of days which likely melt anything down low.

A incoming pattern of cold weather for 18-19 Nov is becoming clear with it becoming colder, stronger and further south than last time. Forecasts show a cold temperature of -6°C below 1,500 meters above snow on flat land, moving south to just north of Noto Peninsula in Kanazawa.

The possibility of the first snow on the plains north of Niigata City is increasingly likely. On the other side of the ranges from Myoko Kogen 妙高高原 , the possibility of the first decent snowfall in Takayama and Hakuba is quite high. Looks like there will be around 10-20 centimeters of snow above 1,500 metres at Kagura, Nozawa Onsen , Myoko Ski Resort, Madarao Kogen, Destination Hakuba Travel and Shiga Kogen. With Shiga Kogen meant to be opening on 23 Nov things might be touch and go, although they do have some snowmaking ability.

Myoko Snow Report

Are you looking for the latest Myoko Weather information or the Myoko Snow Report? Keep up with all the forecast snow information for the MyokoKogen ski resorts via our webpages and social media.

Myoko Snow Reports run from the start of the first snow around mid-November and continue after until the last lifts close in early May (at Seki Onsen, Akakura Kanko and Lotte Arai). Generally January and February are the best months for skiing in Myoko Kogen although it’s not unusual to have awesome powder conditions in December or March, or even April!
