Enjoy Monet's Garden illuminated by colorful lights🌈✨

Every weekend and national holiday between November 2 and December 8, Monet's Garden Marmottan opens after dark and is bathed in beautiful colored lights. The theme of this year’s Night Canvas of Monet event is “Twilight Resonance,” and the transition from fall to winter will be expressed through light art.

As a bonus, the autumn leaves usually reach their peak around the end of November, so visitors will be able to experience the garden’s fall foliage🍁

If you can make it on November 9 or 23, you can also catch a pretty fireworks display. On these days, bus tours from Kochi City are available through Tosaden Travel and the cafe and restaurant will stay open after dark. It should be a lovely way to spend an evening✨

Monet's Garden Marmottan closes for maintenance from December (except the first two weekends) until late February, so “Twilight Resonance” will likely be your last opportunity to visit this gorgeous garden in 2024.

Fragrant Yuzu and retro railways in the mountain village of Umaji🍋🚂

Although it is less than two hours by car from Kochi City, arriving in Umaji Village is like stepping back in time. 30 km from the nearest city, you won’t find any convenience stores and few streetlights in this little community of around 800 people who live in the 4% of the village that isn’t covered in forest🌿

The village once thrived through forestry, supplying lumber far and wide, but today, it is best known for its delicious and fragrant organic Yuzu citrus fruit🍋🍋

November is harvest time, and one of the best ways to enjoy nature and Yuzu-scented air is to ride the forestry railroad. It is a wonderfully retro experience and provides a glimpse of life in days gone by when the trains carried their nationally acclaimed Yanase cedar wood rather than tourists🚂

Be sure not to miss the view from the top of the 92.3-meter Umaji Incline funicular railway, powered purely by water and gravity!

Sunflowers in Autumn? Yes, Please!🌻

Tosa City is one of Japan’s sunniest spots, and from late October to early November, you can witness the rare sight of sunflowers blooming in autumn☀️

A residents' association has been delighting locals and visiting flower lovers by planting local fields with sunflowers every year for the past 20 years. It is no small production, with around 300,000 flowers this year🌻🌻

These later-blooming sunflowers are shorter than the summer sunflowers you might be familiar with, giving them an extra touch of cuteness. The flowers start to appear at the end of October, making now a perfect time to visit😊

Welcome to the fragrant world of yuzu (and no, it's not a lemon!)

Yuzu is often mistaken for a lemon, but the taste, aroma, and even the environment in which it grows are completely different. While most citrus fruits thrive in warm coastal areas, yuzu flourishes in the chilly mountains of Japan.

Did you know that Kochi Prefecture is Japan’s number one producer of yuzu?

The Chugei region in eastern Kochi is especially famous for its yuzu production, and when you visit its small rural villages, you'll be greeted by the delightful scent of yuzu wafting through the air.

In May, the trees bloom with adorable white flowers (yes, even the flowers have a refreshing citrus scent!), and by November, it's finally harvest season. Farmers are hard at work gathering the bumpy, yellow fruit, which they then turn into delicious jams or toss into a relaxing yuzu bath.

That’s right! In Japan, it's a long-standing tradition to soak in yuzu baths. The oils in yuzu, including one called nomilin, are said to promote relaxation and improve circulation—perfect for warming up on those chilly winter days.

If you find yourself in Kochi in November, why not swing by the Chugei area? One of its hidden gems is Umaji Village. With a population of just 800, this small village harvests an impressive 800 tons of yuzu each year!

You can enjoy yuzu-inspired dishes, and shop for unique souvenirs like yuzu-infused jams, jellies, and even cosmetics like hand creams made with yuzu oil.

Come explore, indulge in the flavors, and take a piece of this charming village home with you!

🚌
Umaji Village is about 2 hours from Kochi City by public transport
https://visitkochijapan.com/en/see-and-do/10489

🍋
Yuzu is also, of course, a favorite ingredient of chefs around the world, and we will be posting about a local yuzu dish in November, but in the meantime, learn more about Yuzu here😊

Autumn Canoeing Adventure on the Shimanto River🛶

With summer behind us and the cool, crisp air of autumn settling in, it’s the perfect time for an outdoor adventure in Kochi! Why not hop in a canoe and paddle down Japan's last free-flowing river—the breathtaking Shimanto River—before winter rolls in?

While canoeing on the Shimanto River is fantastic any time of year, there's something magical about gliding along the glassy waters in the autumn breeze, surrounded by the season's vibrant colors🍁

At Shimanto Canoe and Camp Village Kawarakko, English-speaking instructors make it easy for everyone to join the fun—even if it’s your first time in a canoe. After a quick lesson, you’ll practice in shallow water before heading down the river. Autumn, the perfect season for the Shikoku Pilgrimage🍁

The Shikoku Pilgrimage, a 1,400-km journey that takes in 88 Buddhist temples, is one of the world’s great pilgrimages, attracting people from around the world. The foliage along the route is beautiful, and comfortable temperatures make it an ideal time to walk🍁

Walking the entire pilgrimage takes at least a month, but many people cover the route in sections, sometimes taking months or even years to complete. Sixteen of the pilgrimage’s temples are in Kochi, known as the “ascetic training” section of the route. It can be challenging, but it is a great way to see some of Kochi’s most spectacular scenery⛰

Even if you only have a day or two, a great way to get a flavor of the pilgrimage is to visit Chikurin-ji Temple, which is easily accessible using the My-Yu Bus from Kochi City and is particularly pretty in autumn.

The path up to the temple takes you past moss-covered rocks, bringing you to the breathtaking sight of the temple’s vermilion five-story pagoda framed by the gorgeous red leaves of magnificent maple trees. Be sure also to take the opportunity to spend some time in quiet appreciation of the majestic view from the veranda that overlooks the 14th-century Japanese garden. Enhance your experience further by joining one of the meditation or sutra-copying sessions offered by the temple🧘‍♂️

A visit to Chikurin-ji Temple is excellent for the soul at any time of the year, but seeing it fringed with red, yellow, and gold leaves in the fresh autumn breeze cannot fail to fill you with gratitude and is sure to be one of your most memorable experiences during your time in Japan😊

🍁The autumn colors at Chikurin-ji Temple are at their best in November.

Take a stroll above the clouds on a 1,400m high plateau⛰

One of Japan’s three most extensive karst lands is in Shikoku's center on the northern edge of Kochi Prefecture. Located at over 1,400m above sea level, the Tengu Highlands is one of the best places in the prefecture to view autumn colors; its abundant tree species resplendent in the bright colors of fall.

The “Therapy Road” walking trail is a well-maintained path surrounded by forest. The soft cypress wood chips with which it is paved are not only easy on the legs, they also give the air a refreshing aroma. Walking between the trees, listening to the sound of birds chirping and insects singing, is, as the name suggests, wonderfully therapeutic and serves to revive both body and spirit!

With several courses of varying lengths and difficulty to choose from, people of all fitness levels can enjoy this lovely walking area👍

The high elevation does mean that the air can get chilly even in the fall, so remember to bring a warm jacket!

The long-hot summer heat has released its grip, and autumn is in the air, even here in balmy Kochi. The comfortable temperatures make this a great time to visit, and the sight of Ochi’s pretty cosmos fields is not to be missed😍

Miyanomae Park in Ochi, about an hour's drive from Kochi Station, is home to the largest cosmos field in the prefecture. Every October, the approximately 1.5 million cosmos planted by local people bloom, creating an expansive pink carpet-like landscape💗

During the town’s “Cosmos Festival,” in addition to sitting back and enjoying the view of the flower fields, there is also a cosmos maze, music on weekends, and food stalls offering local dishes from the Niyodo River area🍡

Dropping in at the Ochi Cosmos Festival is recommended while exploring the Niyodo River area, known for its incredible “Niyodo blue” water, river activities, and nature walks. All just a short drive from Kochi City🚘

Immerse yourself in the world of Monet's paintings🖼️

An hour's drive east of Kochi Ryoma Airport, the captivatingly beautiful Kitagawa Village is blessed with lush greenery, yuzu citrus orchards, and one of Japan’s most unique gardens🌺

Monet's Garden Marmottan
With guidance from the Claude Monet Foundation, Monet's beloved garden and house in Giverny, France, and the Mediterranean landscape he enjoyed with Renoir have inspired a garden designed to capture the great master’s spirit. Strolling through the gardens is like walking through an open-air, natural art museum.

The three gardens of Monet's Garden Marmottan💁

🪷The Water Garden
Monet's beloved water lilies bloom and are reflected in a carefully tended pond, their colors changing with the light throughout the day. Here, you can enjoy blue waterlilies –– a favorite of Monet, but one that was unsuited to the French climate. Just like the other colors, this tropical variety also opens in the morning and closes in the afternoon. The best time to see them is between 10 am and 2 pm, so time your visit accordingly to catch these beautiful flowers.

🪷 The Flower Garden
As colorful as a painter's palette, this garden features rose-arched arches, flower beds of every possible hue, and mixed flowers. The flowers change with the seasons, and the colors change throughout each as the light changes, making each visit a new discovery.

🪷 The Bordighera Garden
Taking advantage of the richly undulating terrain, the atmosphere of the Mediterranean is created while incorporating local plants and elements of Japanese garden design. Visiting this garden is an extraordinary experience.

A staff of about ten people cares for the entire garden, using as little pesticide as possible to protect the flowers and trees from pests and diseases. And they greet us with smiles as beautiful as the garden itself.

Ashizuri: One of Japan's most beautiful cycling destinations🚴

Located at the southernmost tip of Kochi, Cape Ashizuri has been called "the hardest place in Japan to get to from Tokyo" (it takes about 10 hours to get there by train… 🤫).

It is, however, very much worth visiting!

Cape Ashizuri is in the east of the Ashizuri-Uwakai National Park in southwestern Shikoku. It is a scenic and geological wonderland offering a beautiful harmony of the deep blue Pacific Ocean, sheer granite cliffs, and one of Japan's most prominent white lighthouses. Also boasting enormous undersea coral reefs, you can really feel the richness of nature here🌿

Most people travel around the Ashizuri area by car, but it is also a perfect place to explore by bicycle.
From your base on the hot spring resort at the cape, the approximately 40-km loop of the peninsula takes in fantastic locations such as the pilgrimage temple of Kongofuku-ji Temple, the huge Hakusan Natural Arch, and the stunning Ryugu Shrine⛩

The roads, although narrow, are generally quiet and take you through lovely camelia tree tunnels and past tiny fishing villages✨You are also sure to meet pilgrims and friendly locals along the way that isn’t possible when traveling by car😉

On your return, soak away any fatigue, relaxing in one of the cape’s reviving hot springs♨️

E-bike rentals are available at seven locations in the Ashizuri area. Please refer to this guide map and enjoy cycling along the dynamic and beautiful coastline 💁

Bonkers about bonito🐟🐟🐟

Kochi is Japan’s top consumer of “katsuo,” or bonito, as it is called in Japanese, much of it gobbled up as the prefecture’s soul food, “katsuo no takaki,” slices of bonito seared over flaming straw and served with ponzu dressing.

Bonito season comes twice a year. The bonito that arrives in spring is characterized by its firm flesh and light flavor, while it's rich and fatty when it returns in the autumn. It goes without saying that everyone in Kochi is now looking forward to the fall season😋

The port of Kure in Nakatosa Town is famous for its retro townscape and single-line bonito fishing. As well as being a relatively sustainable fishing method, as the bonito is caught one by one, it doesn’t get damaged. And because it is caught just off the coast, it is super fresh😮

Head to the over 100-year-old Taisho-machi Market, where fresh locally-caught bonito and other fish can be bought ready to eat💛

Ask the staff at Tanaka Fishmonger, recognizable by their “NO KATSUO NO LIFE" T-shirts, for their recommended catch of the day. They will grill your fish for you, but if you are up for the challenge, why not try straw grilling for yourself? 🧑‍🍳

The searing process only takes about 1 minute and a half, but you may be surprised at how heavy the grilling forks that you use to grill each side of the fillet and at the heat produced by the dancing flames😲 All your hard work will surely make your bonito even more delicious✨

NOTE: Reservations are required for the grilling experience, but English-speaking staff are on hand to take your phone reservation at 0889-52-2729. You can also contact them through the online contact form on their website
https://www.tanakatuo.com.

Bonus bonito 🤭
Just how proud are locals of their favorite food? When you arrive at Kochi Ryoma Airport, you are greeted by replicas of bonito dishes going around on the baggage carousel when they go to pick up your luggage😂

Traditional crafts of Kochi Vol. 3

✨Furafu Flags ✨

If you have been in the Japanese countryside around Children's Day in early May, you have probably encountered colorful “koi-nobori” carp streamers fluttering in the wind🎏

In some parts of Kochi, however, there is a good chance that in addition to these carp streamers, you will see huge, brightly colored flags. Called “furafu”, the name is said to come from the English or Dutch word for flag.

Decorated with heroic figures from Japanese fairy tales and auspicious carp, these flags represent the wish for children to grow up healthy and strong. As living conditions have changed over the years, smaller flags are becoming more common, but the big ones can be as large as 6 meters wide and 3 meters long!

In an imaginative take on the tradition, you can also find these colorful designs on other products, such as tote bags and T-shirts, in areas where the furafu tradition remains strong🧐

One such area is Kami City, east of Kochi City. At Mitani Dyeing, you can see this ever-evolving traditional culture up close. Outside of the busy January to May season, as well as looking at the finished products, you can also watch the craftsmen at work and see how they put their heart and soul into each brush stroke. It is also possible to try part of the painting process for yourself 🙌

Go east (of Kochi) on Japan's newest train line 🚃✨

Kochi Prefecture has much to offer beyond the prefectural capital with its impressive castle. Exploring east of the city along the Pacific coast is easy, thanks to a somewhat unusual local rail line💁

Introducing the Gomen-Nahari Line🚃

Opened in 2002, the Gomen-Nahari Line is Japan's youngest local railway line. The line starts at Gomen Station, a 15-minute drive from Kochi Ryoma Airport, and runs 42.7 km to Nahari Station, calling at 21 stations along the way.

What’s special about the Gomen-Nahari Line? 🧐

① Much of the line runs along Tosa Bay, and much of it is elevated, giving passengers exceptional views of the Pacific Ocean from the train windows⛰

② Two trains that run along the line, named "Shintaro-go and Yataro-go," have semi-open-air carriages to feel the breeze as you take in the views. These trains only run three times a day, so check departure times in advance so you don’t miss out🚂

Get the most out of the Gomen-Nahari Line with this special deal✨
Purchase the one-day pass for 1,670 yen, which allows you to hop on and off the train along the way. This way, in addition to enjoying the great views, you can also check out places like the beach park and market at Yasu and take a walk in the Ioki Cave. The pass comes with discount coupons to use at around 40 places along the line, AND it’s 490 yen cheaper than a standard round-trip ticket between Gomen and Nahari!
