"Move over St Barts", says Tibbs Jenkins of The Standard. "Now, it’s all about the pristine beaches and laid-back vibes of a tiny, secretive African archipelago."

Hidden coves, boho boutiques and sunset parties at eco-lodges — it’s no wonder Kate Moss, Adwoa Aboah and Charlotte Tilbury are fans of holidaying on this tranquil African archipelago. You’ll wish you were here, says Tibbs Jenkins

A stroll around the Shella seafront will wind you past this corner, which most often is a lively meeting point for locals and tourists. Sea Suq, this family run restaurant, is open daily from morning until evening, serving bite-sized eats and other traditional Swahili dishes made by a team of women. And there's good reason it is popular. The food is delicious, and the atmosphere very inviting.

It is our hope when you check in to Jannah that you really immerse yourself in the local culture. We can, for example, point you in the direction of great eggs and bacon in the morning, but up on our rooftops, or in the comfort of your suite, we can serve you our favourite breakfast bites traditionally eaten by the Swahili people. This is best enjoyed "pole pole" (slowly slowly) alongside the sounds of our little village, Shela, stirring to life.

The annual Lamu Cultural Festival, spanning three days, takes place this year from 28 - 30 November. During this time, locals from various islands within the Lamu Archipelago come together to joyously celebrate their past, present, and future.

Packed with a diverse range of activities, the festival offers an enriching experience for those interested in the traditions that are the heart and soul of these communities. This will include dhow and donkey races, henna painting for women, traditional Bao competitions, Swahili poetry, and the showcasing of different Swahili foods.

This beautiful short film, produced and edited by
Michael Gachiri gives you a great taste of the vibrant spirit you will find at this year's event.

It takes a village to get a new dhow into the ocean and a village to name one.

Earlier this week, this beautiful, handcrafted dhow was tugged by a team at low tide towards the ocean for its final additions before setting sail this season. This included painting and the important tradition of naming the boat. Children are invited to make female name suggestions, and the most commonly suggested name wins. Her name is Ferdaus.

Stay with us in Shela Village and immerse yourself in the special Swahili culture that has been preserved here for hundreds of years.

There are few places in the world where you can wander around on foot, carefree day or night. Where donkeys (not cars) can cause the odd traffic jam, and where you can pass discerning travellers and Maasai warriors on the same bougainvillea-lined alley way. Where a boat ride ideally starts and ends a day, where the beach stretches for more than 13kms, and where the locals can teach you a thing or two about slowing right down.

There is actually no place like Lamu...

Here on Lamu Island, and within the Islamic culture, variations of henna dye are used on special occasions to decorate the hands, arms and feet of Swahili women.

Authentic henna dye is made from a powdered leaf mixed with water and the juice of limes. It is then drawn onto the skin over a series of successive applications to ensure that the henna does not fade too soon. These designs are like works of art.

A gentle morning amidst the mangroves, dipping in the cool water, sipping on strong coffee, is perhaps the most magical way to start the day in the Lamu Archipelago.

Set off on one of our traditional dhows, refurbished for utmost comfort.

The Tawka Ruins, dating back to the 15th century, are among the largest archaeological sites in the Lamu coastal region. Located on Manda Island, this ancient Swahili village was once a thriving trading post. Today, it is protected by the National Museums of Kenya.

These ruins are easily accessed by boat, just a 30-minute cruise through the mangroves. We can arrange the excursion for you on board one of our traditional dhow boats.
