Black marlin fishing still very good, some decent kingfish over 20 kg and if you look for them a fair few sailfish around.

03/08/2017

Alleycat out yesterday gets black marlin misses another, whales all around the watamu banks, some decent sized fish around for so early in the season.

01/08/2017

Tarka picks up another black marlin today, fishing looking great with a few sailfish around also.

01/08/2017

Tarka has a black marlin this morning lots of hump back whales being seen of watamu at the moment for those looking for whale spotting trips.

26/07/2017

July and another season is under way with some very decent fishing, Tarka has been off to a flier, one day with 3 black marlin and yesterday they picked up two blacks, Alleycat was also out yesterday releasing a black marlin and 5 sailfish caught all together in a pack. Both boats only on short days so well worth a go at present.

Amazing footage of a 600-pound blue marlin on the hunt for a 25-pound dorado.

21/06/2017

Some traveled across an entire ocean.

13/02/2017

Fishing remains hot down south and definitely warming up further north with Unreel releasing two blue marlin on Saturday and a Blue and a Mako on Sunday, with competition season starting we could be in for some great scores.

08/02/2017

Shimoni still running hot, Jasiri on her way down to Shimoni on a night trip records a super grand slam 1 blue marlin, 1 striped marlin, 1 broadbill, 1 sailfish, Kamara 3 striped, 1 sail. Clueless 2 striped & 1 sail.

06/02/2017

Watamu Tarka caught a very nice blue marlin of 662lbs, sadly died after the 3 hour fight. Good sign for the next months fishing.

06/02/2017

Fishing really getting hot down south in Shimoni, Clueless grand-slam included 1 blue marlin (396lb) 3 striped marlin & 2 sailfish, next day 3 striped & 1 sailfish. Broadbill grand- slam 1 black marlin, 3 striped & 1 sailfish, Simba 3 striped marlin and 6 sailfish great fishing, further north things have gone a little quite at present.

30/01/2017

Kilifi Little Toot wins with 2 striped Marlin and a blue marlin, plenty of sailfish now here with Tarka having a great day towards the end of last week catching one black marlin and eight sailfish.

27/01/2017

Sorry for lack of info lately, Marlin season is well underway, early in Jan there was plenty of action out on the rips with blue and striped marlin that has dropped off in the last week or so. Black marlin fishing closer in to Watamu has been good with Tarka getting a brace one day. Further south the fishing has been picking up nicely with Shuwari reporting blue and striped marlin catches on a regular basis, I also hear Shimoni is fishing well but nothing precise. There is a bit of a migration of boats from the north coast to the south over the next week so should get some feed back then. Kilifi comp this weekend if your in the area, Tight Lines.

02/12/2016

Tega out night fishing on the North Kenya Bank gets 7 broadbill swordfish trolling. Closer in a few sailfish getting caught best day I've heared of 4. Alleycat out on the rips raised a blue marlin and with Kaskazi about to start up thats very good news.

16/11/2016

Last few days plenty of game fish action in the boiling pot, good king best I've seen 23 kg, some sizable GT's and the odd sailfish. Clueless released a black marlin two days ago, Unreel released one yesterday with plenty more being seen closer in. Reports of marlin strikes out on the rips, with the odd striped marlin being caught, which bodes well for the coming marlin season. Sailfish numbers are the main concern with the South Africans arriving this weekend for a 4 day competition in Malindi. Weather hot!

10/11/2016

Wow

25/10/2016

Malindi Festival, conditions proved very difficult over the weekend with Saturday seeing the best of the fishing. Unreel manged to find a striped marlin and a sailfish to romp home in first place, Eclare took 2nd with a sailfish and a few game fish with the newly res-erected Snark also with a sailfish taking 3rd.

13/10/2016

Ok sorry for lack of info, boats starting to get going now with the MSFC's October festival just round the corner. Early season the black marlin were around in decent numbers, Tarka, Alleycat & Unreel all going into double figures on blacks and some yellowfin tuna coming and going bigest up towards 30kgs, Tarka one day getting 310 kgs. Simba released a striped marlin out on the rips and missed another on Monday, Alleycat also raised two that day as well but no hook up. Brought Jasiri up to Malindi yesterday with Peter Ready, water in close was green but we did see a number of sailfish jumping which will be of interest to the light line specialists competing in the Malindi comp next Friday. Wind has picked up the last few days, hopefully when that drops off the water will clear.

04/08/2016

Worth a wathch

24/07/2016

With a few boats starting to get out, sailfish still around and some small tuna starting to get caught. The black marlin are being seen but not really turning on at present.

11/07/2016

Boats starting to go out more regularly, at the start of last week a few sailfish around, Tarka getting three one day. Last couple of days some black marlin starting to appear, Tarka again picked one up 2 days ago, I hear there was a decent one seen or lost today, wind still strong but seems to be dropping off a little.

Sometimes I’m clever. More often, I’m just lucky. I’m sprawled in a hammock on the edge of the Indian Ocean. The breeze smells of dust and frangipani, and in the wet mid-morning heat, apathetic wavelets are flopping half-heartedly onto an utterly deserted beach. It’s a holiday-brochure tropical fant...

Thanks Pete for this picture of me on that 377lb blue marlin on his little 20 footer. As you can see, this was at the start of the fight and all was well, three hours later it was a far more pitiful sight. Just got to love blue marlin fishing. Off season here now with all boats out of the water. Roll on July. Tight Lines!!

10/04/2016

On Friday Peter Glover invited me out on his boat Tzander a 20 foot walk round hull. Just the 2 of us set out for the Rips blue marlin area about 25 miles off. The wind decided to start to blow that day making it a little lumpy.

Once there, we watched Alleycat hook up a small blue.We had a sailfish up to a big lulu that pricked itself and left, then our patience paid off around 1pm when we hooked up a nice blue marlin. All was well, the first run was a long one, the fish had greyhounded across the back of the boat on hook up, quite a sight in a small boat. With the fish coming easily and probably only 100 meters out things changed and the fish sounded.

Showing obvious signs of a wrapped fish, it just kept going straight down. With a 50W reel with 80lb line we were quite quickly in trouble on the getting spooled front. As Pete got another rod ready to clip on to the original rod that was to be thrown overboard the fish stopped. With no chair, gimble or bucket, I was down to a rubber ball to put on the butt as protection. Being a bent butt this didn't help much.

And so started a fight that can only be described as sheer purgatory. The only way to lift the now very dead fish from 500 meters down was to use my left hand to pull the line, to allow the reel to regain a little. Millimeter after millimeter of excruciating pain we slowly raised the fish, after 3 hours we got the leader and secured the fish.

I was shot by then, no skin on my fingers, a rather unhappy back and we still had to get it in the boat. We could get it a third of the way in but no further, realizing it was hopeless we quickly decided to rope it to the side and head home slowly. The blue marlin weighed in at 377 lb. You always have to earn a marlin on a small boat but the experience is worth many fish on a big charter boat.

Cheers Pete, I look forward to next time. Proceeds from the sale of fish were donated to a local charity. The rains have arrived today so that was probably one of the last days fished out there as the black marlin are running hot inshore off Watamu. Great way to end the season.
