DID YOU KNOW?!?
The red elephants of Tsavo are the ONLY red elephants in the world. Actually, they are really the same colour as every other elephant in the world, but they just appear red due to constantly dust-bathing with the Park's fine red volcanic soil.Over 10,000 of them inhabit the Park, so the chances of seeing one are hopefully pretty high. Over 10,000 of them inhabit the Park, so the chances of seeing one are hopefully pretty high. The Tsavo East National Park is about nine time the size of Masai Mara National Reserve. This park is perfect for people who desire to get away from the crowds as you experience a peaceful game drive. This section of the Park does have its own scenic highlights too, including the Yatta Plateau, which is one of the world’s largest and longest lava flows (300 km long), and the Lugard Falls, which are actually a series of fast flowing rapids along the Galana River.

Extreme Africa Safaris

Leopard stands for grace and cunning. Often regarded as a shy, nocturnal animal, sightings of leopard in the Maasai Mara can occur even in the middle of the day and last for several minutes. They prefer wooded savannahs and rocky outcrops, and in the Maasai Mara they are most likely to be encountered resting in a tree.
The most famous place that you will likely encounter this elusive big cat in the Mara triangle is the Leopard Gorge. Leopards have remarkable vision, exceptional hearing and a good sense of smell. A skilled climber, they often drop on their unsuspecting prey from above, followied by a strike with claws.

We know you have heard about the white elephant, but have you ever seen a white giraffe? Kenya is home to the unseen. 🇰🇪

This giraffe was born in the Ishaqbini Hirola Conservancy in southeast Kenya with a rare genetic condition called leucism that causes partial loss of pigmentation in its skin. It was fitted with a tracking device on one of its horns Nov. 8 2020.

They are the largest existing land animals. Three living species are currently recognised: the African bush elephant, the African forest elephant, and the Asian elephant.Elephants are matriarchal, meaning they live in female-led groups. The matriarch is usually the biggest and oldest. She presides over a multi-generational herd that includes other females, called cows, and their young. Adult males, called bulls, tend to roam on their own, sometimes forming smaller, more loosely associated all-male groups.

DID YOU KNOW!?!?!

Hippos are the third-largest living land mammal, after elephants and white rhinos. Despite their large and bulky appearance, they have adaptations to their semi-aquatic environments allowing them to move swiftly on both water and land. Their feet have four-webbed toes that splay out to distribute weight evenly and therefore adequately support them on land, and their short legs provide powerful propulsion through the water. They have very thick skin that is virtually hairless except for the thick bristle-like hair on their heads and tails. The outer layers of skin are quite thin, making them prone to wounds from fighting. Their flat, paddle-like tail is used to spread excrement, which marks territory borders and indicates status of an individual. Their powerful jaws are capable of opening up to 150 degrees revealing their enormous incisors.

DID YOU KNOW!?!?!?
The name for lion in Swahili, an African language, is ‘simba’.

In the wild they live for between 10 and 14 years

A group, or pride, can be up to 30 lions, depending on how much food and water is available.

Female lions are the main hunters. While they’re out looking for food, the males guard the pride’s territory and their young.

A lion’s roar can be heard up to eight kilometres away.

Lions scent mark their territory, using their wee, to create a border.

1. Kenya’s Iconic Beer Was Named “Tusker” After a Kenyan Elephant Killed the Brewing Company’s Founder.
2. Kenyan Elephants Can “Smell” Water
3. You Can Adopt an Elephant in Kenya.

African elephants are the largest land mammals. In Kenya, the elephant species is the African Elephant, which includes the forest and savannah elephant, known as tembo or ndovu by Kenyan locals. Additionally, the African elephant has permanent and stronger tusks that grow after the first set of tusks fall off and elephants portrays its feelings with its ears. When male elephants hit puberty at 14 they leave the herd to join other young males. Similarly, elephants have sensitive skin despite its toughness and also have rituals just like humans.

Kenya’s geographic diversity means that it supports an extraordinary range of wildlife. The country’s premier national parks and reserves, a list that includes the Masai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo East and West, Samburu-Buffalo Springs, Meru and Laikipia, are all home to most or all of the Big Five, i.e. lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and Black rhino.
