* GET TO KNOW* Lake Nakuru National Park, located in central Kenya about 160 kilometers northwest of Nairobi within the Great Rift Valley, is one of the country's premier national parks, celebrated for its rich biodiversity and scenic landscapes. Established in 1961 as a bird sanctuary and designated a national park in 1968, it became internationally renowned for the millions of flamingos that once turned the lake’s alkaline waters pink as they fed on blue-green algae. The park was later expanded to 188 square kilometers to protect endangered species like the black and white rhinoceros, making it a vital rhino sanctuary. It encompasses diverse habitats, including the lake, grasslands, acacia woodlands, and rocky escarpments, which support a wide variety of wildlife such as lions, leopards, buffaloes, giraffes, and over 400 bird species. In recent years, environmental challenges such as rising water levels have significantly altered the ecosystem and impacted flamingo populations.
