Long grass in the Mara at the moment is hampering the bountiful lion populations ability to hunt effectively. Luckily; they are able to adapt quickly by changing their prey.
The black rock pride had taken down a Buffalo and her calf on this morning and this female was fat and happy.

I followed these two lionesses until they eventually lay down in a croton thicket to post up. I could see they were alert and had their gaze focused down the valley. Sure enough we were treated to a spectacular chase and a successful kill.

World Lion Day

Today, one of Africa’s biggest icons, the lion, is under threat. Their suffering from loss of habitat has driven lion into becoming even more endangered than elephant.

These big cats are one of the most majestic creatures to roam our plains and we are lucky enough to have projects fighting for them.

I’m very happy to be back in the Mara and was lucky enough to get a spectacular show from this male yesterday. After waiting and watching him lazing in the grass for an hour, he eventually got up and I managed to get this shot before he wandered off with his young family.

Located in Samburu, Mount Ololokwe is a very spiritual symbol for the Samburu tribe. It can be seen for miles in Northern Kenya, and sets a beautiful backdrop for this photo.

Tomorrow I’m heading down to Amboseli for some much needed time out of the city. Sadly, Tim, one of Kenya’s biggest tuskers passed away at the beginning of the year, but we’re still hopeful for some beautiful sightings with these majestic creatures.

Exciting News!

Today, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced that lockdown restrictions will be lifted on Nairobi, Mombasa and Mandera counties from tomorrow, 7th July. Hopefully, domestic air travel will reopen on 15th July too, with the re-opening of international travel following on 1st August.

We are very excited to get back out into the wilderness and re-explore our beautiful country. Stay safe everyone!

Please have a look at this beautifully made short film about the Mara Triangle - a place special to myself and many others.

This area of land is hugely important to the greater Maasai Mara ecosystem. It is home to a huge array of fauna and flora and plays an essential role in the annual wilderbeest migration. The biodiversity is astonishing and given the fact that the area was a “no go zone” not so long ago, the transformation is nothing less than one of the greatest success success stories in the history of Kenyan conservation. If it wasn’t for the hard work by the Mara Conservancy team in setting up and managing this area it simply wouldn’t exist.

“The effect of Covid-19 is having a worldwide impact on conservation and the Mara Triangle is facing the gravest crisis in its 72-year history as a protected area.

For nineteen years the Mara Conservancy has been able to manage the Mara Triangle with its share of Park fees and without any substantial donor support.”
