Tracking an elephant isn’t just about finding them; it’s about the journey. As we approach quietly, I share stories with my clients—how elephants care for their young, the role they play in shaping the ecosystem, and why Amboseli is their sanctuary. Seeing the wonder on my clients’ faces makes every step worthwhile.

Part 6: Spotting the Giants

The final moment is thrilling—catching a glimpse of the elephants. Whether it’s the flick of an ear or the movement of a tree, my heart races every time. I stay at a respectful distance, using my binoculars to watch their interactions and movements.

Part 5: Watching the Wind

Wind is crucial when tracking elephants. If the wind carries my scent toward them, they’ll know I’m coming and might move away. I position myself downwind to avoid disturbing them. This also gives me a better chance to observe them without them noticing.

Part 4: Reading the Landscape

Amboseli’s vast openness with its acacia trees makes tracking special. Elephants often create paths as they move. I normally look for trampled grass or disturbed soil that shows the herd's direction. Knowing their feeding habits helps me predict their next move—usually near shade or water.

Part 3: Listening to the Wild

The sounds of the bush are my best ally. Elephants communicate through deep rumbles and even low-frequency sounds humans can’t hear. Sometimes, the distant crack of a tree branch or the calls of birds can give away their location. I always stop to listen—it’s nature’s way of guiding me

Part 2: Following the Trail

Once I find the tracks, I follow their direction. Elephants often head toward water sources or areas with good vegetation. In Amboseli, the open plains can make the trail easy to follow, but I stay alert for changes in the terrain or signs that the herd has spread out.

Part 1: Finding the First Clue

Tracking an elephant starts with spotting signs of their movement. In Amboseli, the first thing I look for is the trail of large footprints—big, round, and unmistakable. I also check for broken branches or fresh dung, which tells me how recently the elephant passed through. The softer the dung, the closer the elephant might be

Would you rather camp under the stars or stay in a cozy lodge?

I’d choose camping under the stars! It’s a unique experience to lie outside, surrounded by nature, and gazing into the stars. You can hear the sounds of the night and maybe spot a shooting star.

But staying in a cozy lodge is nice too. You get warmth, a comfy bed, and the chance to enjoy hot meals by a fireplace with friends.

Both are great, but camping feels more adventurous! What about you?
