Mt. Kipipiri. A gem found alongside the vast Aberdare Ranges at Ndunyu Njeru (Nyandarua County). If you crave for an away vacation deep in the forest, this is one such trails. I rate it second on forest trails after Eburru forest.

From Nairobi, it is about 2.5 hours driving along Nairobi-Nakuru Highway and veering off either at Flyover or Naivasha Junction towards KWS Ndunyu Njeru Station, and then towards Geta Forest Station where the hike begins.

The highest point of Mt. Kipipiri is 3,370mASL. One gains about 850m from the starting point, which is about 2,500mASL. The hike is a traverse going along the gradual ascent of the mountain and takes around 5-7 hours.

Why is Mt. Kipipiri a gem? It is tacked between the great Rift Valley and the Aberdare Ranges. Along the trail at specific view points, one gets a glimpse of Mt. Longonot, L. Naivasha and L. Elementaita on one side, and on the other side, the tips of Elephant Hill, Mt. Kinangop, Rurimeria and Table Mountain are visible.

The trail is donned with a natural rainforest that make hiking along enjoyable as the trees provide shade from time to time against the sun. There are beautiful wild flowers and wild fruits, with berries being the most common. The forest vegetation is also diverse, with trees having artistically carved barks and stature. It's a haven for tree huggers.

Kenya Forest Service has partnered with Aberdare Eco-Tourism and Conservancy CBO to make the trail more enjoyable for hikers. It will be great and better in the near future as they have new trails and trail natural 'beautification' in the pipeline.

These are the remains of Lake Ol’ Bolossat. It is the only lake in central Kenya and the only highland lake in Africa. The lake forms the headwaters for the Ewaso Ng'iro River, which supports the livelihoods of communities, livestock and wildlife in the dry Laikipia, Samburu, Isiolo and Garissa Counties. Despite its small size (43.3km2) the freshwater lake is known for its rich biodiversity that include hippos and over 300 bird species (both residents and migrants). The lake lies within the central tourism circuit, and supplies Nyahururu town with water. The Ewaso Nyiro River supports the thriving wildlife tourism in Buffalo Springs, Shaba National Reserve, and Lorian swamp in Wajir, where the river goes underground, to re-emerge in Somalia where it joins the Jubba River.

The after effects of the lake drying up are already being felt in the downstream. The area is drying up and unless intervention is done immediately, there will be dire consequences.
