It can take over 24 hours before lions abandon their carcass.
Lions usually rest after an initial feed, lying a short way away from the carcass so that they can still defend their kill against scavengers. In this clip...the lioness is seen dragging the remains of a wildebeeste they had killed for safe guarding under a shade where the rest of her pride are relaxing.
Mother Nature is just amazing!
In our professional guided safaris...we capture the moments as we learn.

The Serval are small to medium-sized, slender and strong cats (9-18kgs)with a yellowish coat marked with black spots and stripes.
They have the longest legs of any cat relative to their body size… as well as the largest ears of any cat.
These extra-long legs, plus their elongated necks, give them the nickname of ‘’giraffe cat '’.
Their long, powerful legs are important for jumping. (They have been known to jump as high as 3.6 m (12 ft). The spotted coat is important in breaking up the pattern on their body.. as well as a protective camouflage against larger carnivores that will kill and eat them. It is also an essential cover when stalking prey. Their large ears act as radar dishes to locate food. They listen for the movement of animals in the grass before they pounce. It is believed that they use them as much as their eyes..and
having these features, they leap in the air to grab birds in flight, hook fish and frogs out of the water and even sn**ch rodents out of their burrows.
Come we go capture and learn more together.

13/06/2022

The Nile Crocodiles are the largest freshwater predators in Africa. They have powerful jaws that give a powerful bite with their sharp conical teeth, which sink into flesh, allowing a grip that is almost impossible to loosen.. and are capable of taking almost any animal within their range.
Their unique body form allows the eyes, ears, and nostrils to be above the water surface while most of the animal is hidden below.
When it closes it’s mouth, all teeth are visible..since the upper and lower jaws are of the same width. These jaws have relatively weak opening muscles, which can be held shut with just a rubber band, or your bare hands (don’t try)..and in addition.. they have a valve at the back of their throat, which allows them to open the jaws under water.
The ‘Crocs’ often sleep or relax. With their mouths wide open. By this, they are not displaying aggression.. but releasing heat to cool themselves down since they don’t sweat.
Something else amazing.. they can have almost 60 teeth at any one time, and can have over 2000 teeth during their lifetime. When one loses a tooth, there is a small replacement already on standby.. and Having the most acidic stomach of any vertebrate.. they swallow small stones to improve their digestion. The stones help grind up the food in their stomachs..hence the reason you see some crocs eating their prey whole, or feeding on tougher animals with shells and bones.
Ask your self; Why do we use the term “Crocodile tears” ? Do crocodiles really shed tears?

One of the most interesting facts about..The Great Wildebeests Migration..is the trustworthy friendship between zebras and wildebeests. The wildebeest and the zebra are best buddies in the wildlife kingdom.
It’s not just about the survival in the race of life..but it also shows the cordial relationship between the two. They both use their sensory parts during the migration for the survival of each other. How do they do this?.. There’s a lot more about this coexistence…
We in Safarivillage Expeditions specialize in Detailed Game Drives. We teach you more as you capture the moments live.
If you are interested to experience the great show of African wildlife, then you have the time to plan for the best, memorable Safari of a lifetime..(July to October 2022)

It takes Buffalo - females four years and - males five years to complete horn development. Until two years old the sexes look alike. At birth buffalo have small stubs of horns, which grow straight for the first 6 to 9 months. By their first birthday the horns have developed a curve. As young males grow, their horns thicken at the base to eventually join, forming the unified boss( the thick, helmet-like growth at the base of a cape buffalo bull’s horns)...at the top of their head. Skin and hair is gradually lost over the boss. By two years of age the horn is halfway to meeting in the center and the bony ridge developing to support the developing boss becomes visible. Hair loss begins at this age. By age three to five, sub-adult males have a mostly completed boss that still has some hair and skin in the center. At this age the horn still has a pale outer layer. The boss is completed and the outer layer is gone around 5 years of age, but young males still lack the thick neck typical of older males. These males have few scars. Middle-aged males, between eight and ten, display ridges on the boss of their horns and have developed the typical thick necks. Males older than ten years can show possibly breakage on their horns, and heavy scarring and hair loss over their body and face. Why is a Buffalo ranked among the Big 5? Lionesses (female lions), are able to give birth to cubs all year round. Pregnancy lasts for around 110 to 120 days.
They can control when they’ll have cubs. If there is no enough food around, they wait until there is before giving birth. They always leave their family pride and find a private den sheltered with bushes, or even a cave and give birth there.
Lion Cubs weigh about 1.5kgs at birth and are born blind with eyes closed. Their eyes at birth are blue..but as they age, the color turns to brown. They have ‘rosettes’(spots similar to leopard) however, once they reach adulthood.. the spots fade, leaving a more uniform coat. Also, like humans.. they are born without teeth, and start their lives suckling their mothers milk.. until they are about 6-7 months old.
The eyes open when they are 2 to 3 weeks old..and when they’re about 3months old, they have all their milk teeth and are able to eat/chew small tender bits of meat effectively. From then, they begin getting their permanent teeth(12 incisors, 4 canines, 10 premolars, 4 molars).
By the time they’re 15 months old, they have no baby teeth left.
The cubs remain hidden for 1-2 months before being introduced to the rest of the pride.
Female lions stay within the pride all their lives but male lions either leave on their own accord.. or are driven off by the pride males at 2 to 3 years of age to prevent inbreeding in the pride.
We Captured the cub on the picture. How old do you think he or she is?

Hippos are amazing creatures. You will be surprised to find out that there’s much more than you think about these interesting animals. Most of you only think of them as big animals who like staying in water blowing air from their nostrils, making noises and showing off their big teeth.
The Hippopotamus,..whose name means ‘river horse’ (Greek),is the third largest/heaviest land mammal after Elephants and Rhinos.
They spend much of their whole lives in water, but ‘funnily',they cannot swim. When you see them in a body of shallow depth water, they’re actually balancing on their tip-toes or standing on a sandbank...and when in deep waters,( with a weight of 3’200kgs) they do sink, but aren’t swimming but rather trotting along on the bottom. Nature has put it such that even when submerged in water, they resurface after 3-5 minutes to breathe..and Amazingly, even when sleeping..they have an automatic motion of surfacing to the top subconsciously for a breath of air through their nostrils.
The main reason they spend much of their time in water, is to protect their extremely sensitive skin from the scorching sun.
We specialize in detailed Game Drives! Book your next safari with us and discover why hippos “yawn” when in water only.

The vervet monkey is a grizzly silver coated long tailed monkey with a black face and white coloring around the eyes and eyelids. They have long arms and legs(appx equal length).. with hairless black hands and feet. Weighing 3-5 kilograms.. with a lifespan of up to 30 years, the vervets are unique in a way. They can communicate the presence of different predators by using different calls. Each alarm call results in a different response appropriate to avoiding the specific predator. The calls can be grouped into three categories: •Wanting - calls include fast gargles ( sounds like bubbling or splashing water) emitted by mothers to attract their infants.. •Aggression or irritation - signified by chattering (sounds like a bunch of silly conversations in a party)•While high pitched squeals (loud cry or noise) - indicate distress. Examples; Leopard alarms are short tonal calls to which vervet monkeys respond by climbing into trees. Eagle alarms are low-pitched grunts to which vervet monkeys respond by looking up to the sky to locate the potential predator then hide under bushes. Snake alarms are high-pitched chatters, to which the vervet monkeys respond by searching the ground for potential predators..and the rest, I leave you on suspense. Nature entails more than just the big 5! Attention on a vervet monkey…can lead you to a leopard. We specialize in detailed game drives. Male lions start to grow manes around the age of two years, which signals the onset of sexual maturity.
One of the main Mane functions is intimidation.
The size and density of the mane can help a lion appear larger, and therefore more threatening, warning away possible opponents.
The intimidating appearance of a thick, lush mane puffed up in the neck and chest region is a symbol of health and potency and it's existence indicates.. serious power !
Darker, fuller manes indicate a healthy lion with plenty of testosterone. This makes him very attractive to the ladies, but also tells potential rivals to beware; coz he won’t back down easily from a fight. The length is also a signal of fighting success.
Black manes tell a lot about a lion. They darken with age, and the thicker they are means; a lion is likely in his prime, eating well, and getting plenty of love' from the ladies.
Imagine a scenario where another male lion dares bring a challenge !

Kenya contains 9.5% of Africa’s Lakes..and is home to 64 lakes. 8 of which (2 Fresh H²o + 6 Alkaline H²o) are all found within its part of the Great Rift Valley.
Lake Bogoria is highly alkaline and twice as salty as sea water. Its original size cover (since then) should be 10 metres deep,34 kms long,3.5kms wide and has a drainage basin of about 700 square kilometres.
Imagine the nice aroma of an Alkaline lake, filled with some nice background sounds of flamingo honks🤔

ZEBRAS are easily one of the most recognizable members of the horse family due to their iconic black and white stripes. There are three living species of zebra.- Plains, Mountain and Grevy's.
Each zebra species has its own general stripe pattern, and more impressively, unique as human fingerprints.
Their black & white striped pattern coat is a good bug repellant, keeping horseflies and other blood-suckers at bay...as well as warding off predators, such as lions, which are colorblind.
Are zebras black with white stripes..or white with black stripes?

The name Leopard comes from leo the lion and pardus the panther(Panthera pardus)which once referred to several large spotted cats.Today, the words leopard & panther refer to the same species, but panther is reserved for Asian and leopard for African. The Leopard is often confused with the cheetah. However, unlike the cheetah,it is a robust, massive and vigorous animal, camped on strong legs and with a broad head carried by a strong neck. Its face is not marked with dark “tear marks” like the cheetah, and it has a coat dotted with small spots on the head, larger spots on the limbs-which become rosettes or ocelli(eye like markings)on the sides, while in the cheetah the spots are always full. The background of their light fawn to gray-brown coat turns white; while the chin, throat, underside of legs, tail and belly are white-gray to white-yellow.Hunters considered it as one of the most, if not the most beautiful trophy of the Big 5.
Fortunately, nowadays the Big 5 are the prey of Photographic hunters. Join our safaris and discover more.

COMMON WARTHOG (Phacochoerus africanus)
Warthogs sleep and rest in holes.
Although they can excavate,..they normally use holes dug by other animals, e.g. aardvarks. Having neither fur nor fat, the hole shelter, is very important for their thermoregulation since it acts as protection from the sun and insulation from cold. At times, they will fill the holes with grass for warmth. Nature is interesting: During birth, litter sizes are usually confined to four young ones because females only have four teats. Each piglet has its own teat, suckling exclusively from it. Even if a piglet dies, the others do not suckle from the available teat.
They use their snouts and tusks to dig for bulbs, tubers, and roots during the dry season… and during the wet season, they may eat earthworms and other small invertebrates. We specialize in detailed Game Drives.

Lions can open their jaws to up 28 centimetres wide, giving them one of the animal kingdom’s biggest bites!
They have 30 adult teeth in total comprising of three types :
•Incisors (12)..for gripping and tearing meat.
•Canines (4)for ripping skin and tearing away meat.
•Carnassial (10.p.m& 4.m) ..used for cutting the meat.
Their tongue is covered in tiny spines (papillae) , which face backwards and used to scrape meat and dirt from bones and fur. The spines make the tongue so rough like a sandpaper...such that, if a lion licks the back of your hand a few times,..you will be left without any skin.

03/06/2021

All mammals can be divided into different groups based on their foot posture while standing. Today we look at the mighty African Elephant. There are actually two distinct species on the African continent, namely: The African Savannah (Loxodonta africana) & The African forest (Loxodonta cyclotis). Elephants are the largest extant four-legged land mammals with large feet; average size of 40cm-50cm (length+width) and a circumference of more than four feet on each foot. They are digitigrades (animals that stand or walk on their toes) and fall into a group called near-ungulates; referring to the fact that they have toenails rather than hooves. Each elephant foot has 5 toes, but not every toe has a nail. The best way to differentiate the Savannah from the Forest is by the number of nails. You can as well estimate their height and age using the foot prints. How many nails does a Savannah elephant have?Book a date with us & discover more as you capture the moments.
