Reticulated giraffes, with their distinctive net-like patterns, are a true icon of the African savanna but, sadly, these gentle giants are endangered, facing threats from habitat loss and poaching. Interesting facts are that their long tongues are a striking purple-black color, likely an adaptation to protect them from the harsh African sun as they browse for leaves high in the trees. Males are generally have balder ossicones (those horn-like bumps) and females have a thinner, hairier ossicones.
