The Caracal ( Caracal caracal)⁣

Is the second largest predator within Arabuko-Sokoke Forest. The caracal is a nocturnal feline that is extremely shy and difficult to observe. It is a territorial creature that prefers to live alone or in pairs. As a carnivore, small mammals, birds, and rodents are common prey for the caracal. It can leap up to 4 meters (12 feet) in the air and catch birds in flight. It stalks its prey until it is within 5 meters (16 feet) of it, then runs it down and kills smaller prey with a bite to the throat or to the back of the neck. As seen in the trail camera photo above this unfortunate Sykes monkey was dispatched in this manner.⁣

Early morning visits to the forest increase the chances of encountering this beautiful feline, As they are more active in the cooler hours of the day.⁣

Karibu Mwanana House

Welcome to our home, Mwanana (meaning Tranquility in Kiswahili) we hope you will enjoy it as much as we do.

The House

A lovely second row 3 bedroom house nestled in lush gardens & set on a ridge with a year round ocean breeze. An open plan sitting room & dinning with sky-high ceilings lead through large French doors onto a veranda that over looks the swimming pool & garden beyond. Fragrant frangipani flowers surround the kitchen & veranda giving off that magical tropical feeling. Located around the swimming pool is a “chillout”pool house, with a large built-in couch & extra soft cushions, your days will be well spent here with a cold drink & a good book. The large & spacious kitchen is located separate to the main building but attached by the veranda. Above the kitchen is one of our favorite spots, the roof deck! With amazing views over the indigenous forests & of course a spectacular sunset set at the end of the day! It’sa great place for an al fresco lunch under the trellis or to enjoy a glass of wine while stargazing.
