The African elephant (Loxodonta africana) weighs from 3 tonnes to 7 tonnes. It eats between 90 and 270 kilos of fodder and drinks between 200 and 300 litres of water a day. During labour the mother is attended by two other females-'midwives'.Although their sight is poor, elephants have an excellent sense of smell and well-developed hearing. Their brain weighs three times that of a human brain - up to 5 kilos
