According to my sources, there are several species of bats found in Kakamega forest. A study investigating the effects of habitat fragmentation on bat assemblages at Kakamega Forest, western Kenya, captured 4983 bats representing 26 species and eight families. These bats were divided into four foraging ensembles: frugivores, forest-interior insectivores, forest-edge insectivores, and open-space insectivores.
At Lirhanda hill bat cave, which is a tunnel that used to be a gold mining site, we have two dominant species of bats,
- African yellow house bat(yellow bellied house bat)
- Leaf-nosed bat( there are a verity of this specie). feeding on mostly insects.
The Hammer-headed Fruit Bat is also endemic to Kakamega Forest and is the largest bat on the African continent with a wingspan of almost one meter and a huge head. mostly feeds on fruits and found on trees.
if you are a caver, of lover of outdoor, definitely you should be here.

September 29th - October 1st 2023.
