The average elective time allocated is by medical school is about 6-8 weeks. Most of the students (11 out of 10 students) will throw in a few weeks holidays afterwards so that they can top up their tan before returning home. With this extended time away from home means budgeting is critical and early financial planning is important.

FLIGHT, ACCOMMODATION and DAILY LIVING expenses it can add up to be an expensive experience. But don't PANIC. There are some tried and tested methods that our team have gathered which past students have used to find their adventures.
More to come ;)

Undertaking a surgery elective rotation in Africa will provide you an early and unequalled exposure to carrying out both the basic and complex surgical procedures.

Whether you are in a 4 year medical curriculum where you would then be looking for a 3rd and 4th Year surgery elective opportunity or you are a senior medical student in a 6 year medical school Curriculum we have the opportunity that is well tailored for you.

You will not only have the opportunity to travel and get immersed in a new culture, safaris cm excursions in East Africa but also meet and interact with other students from across the globe.

How often do you mistake a leopard for a cheetah or vice versa? I’m sure we’ve all made this mistake once or twice. While they are both cats, leopards and cheetahs are very different from each other with distinct differences.

The most common difference between these two animals is the patterns on their coat. leopard has rosettes which are rose - like markings, and cheetahs have a solid round or oval spot shape.

Cheetahs have a black “tear” line which runs down their face. This line runs from the inside of the eye down towards the mouth of the cheetah. The marks are not only beautiful, but help reflect the glare of the sun while hunting during the day.

Leopards hunt at night .The large pupil of the leopard’s eyes allows abundant light to enter, making it possible to see at night when they hunt for their prey.

Cheetahs are the fastest land animals. With speeds of up to 120 km per hour and have the ability to accelerate from 0 to 103 km/h in three seconds, faster than most sports cars!

Leopards, have a speed of about 58 km/h . They have retractable claws which allow them to be the superb climbers , and extremely good swimmers, too!

leopards are also the smallest of the cats. They are stronger and bulkier than the cheetah, but the cheetah is much lighter and taller. Leopards do not have a specific birthing season, though mating is more likely to occur during the months of January and February. Gestation period for leopards is between 90 and 105 days. Leopard females typically give birth to two cubs, although litters can number up to six cubs. The cubs are born with a dull grey coat and not the distinctive rose - like spots.

Cheetah females have a gestation period of 90 – 98 days and typically give birth to a litter of three to four cubs. Both leopards and cheetah cubs are born completely blind, however, they develop rapidly and within 10 days their eyes have opened.

Medical electives are among the most rewarding parts of the undergraduate curriculum, and are certainly among the most eagerly anticipated. Many doctors look back at their elective as an early transformative experience, awakening deep sympathies with their host countries. Such experiences can last a lifetime, and some will even return to help later in life after careers have been realized and families have flown. Electives can also be rich learning experiences, giving students first-hand experience of challenging global health issues. Students can work with patients who have diseases, or disease states, that they will never see at home. Working in demanding and unfamiliar places, especially in developing countries, can, if properly managed, increase independence and self-reliance, critical professional and personal virtues. Given an increasingly globalized world and an increasingly multicultural patient population, the opportunity to work in cultures different from theirs.

Connect with others

Staying at home, especially if you live on your own, can feel lonely. Find creative ways to keep in touch with co-workers, friends, family, and others to help you (and them) feel more connected and supported.

Explore ways of connecting that work for you, whether that’s by post, over the phone, social media, or video-chat. This could be anything, from sharing a cup of tea over video, playing an online game together, or simply sending a supportive text-message.

Giddys Adventure will like to urge our face book followers to look after their mental health and wellbeing if they are working or staying home,

Plan your day

We are all adjusting to a new, rather strange, way of life. This can be a risk to our mental wellbeing.
As tempting as it might be to stay in pyjamas all day, regular routines are essential for our identity, self confidence and purpose.
Try to start your day at roughly the same time you usually would and aim to set aside time each day for movement, relaxation, connection and reflection.
Stay hydration and relax at the end of a long day😍
