Have you ever asked yourself why aircraft windows are usually oval in shape?

It turns out that up to the 1950’s, aircraft windows were square in shape. The aircraft at this time flew at a slow speed and at a low altitude. So why did the manufacturers come up with the oval shape?

The alteration in aircraft window design came about due to the changing demands and conditions in aviation. With aircraft beginning to fly at higher speeds and high altitudes, the square windows proved to be risky and less suitable.

This prompted a shift to the now-familiar round windows, which are better suited to withstand the structural stresses imposed by modern air travel.

The curved design helps distribute stresses and pressures during flight, reducing the risk of structural weaknesses. This shape also minimizes drag and maintains smooth aerodynamics for improved fuel efficiency.

Additionally, the curvature enhances structural integrity and aids in pressure equalization between the cabin and the outside environment, ensuring a comfortable and safe atmosphere for occupants as the aircraft changes altitude.
