Seeing double? Well, so are we!

An elephant birthing twins is a rare occurrence though few incidences have been recorded in the wild. This year, Miss Angelina came through with her recently birthed set of twins; a male and a female. Born in 1985, the mama is a fairly known matriarch within the Amboseli ecosystem and is well distinguished by her reversed tusks.

The calves; Amora and Aurora B, are still small and very playful. They have been born into a family of three sisters: Aspen (2015), Amola (2011) and Aurora (adopted by Angelina, 2010).

This event comes as great news almost immediately after the sad death of the iconic Big Tim. Yet, what better gift than a celebration of life.

Congratulations to the new mama and here's welcoming the little ellies into the beautiful spaces of the wild.

Kenya Wildlife Service

On 23rd August 2019, we celebrated an important milestone in saving a species from extinction. With neither Najin and Fatu, the last two northern white rhino females, able to carry a pregnancy, the future of the northern white rhino rests on pioneering artificial reproduction techniques.

In a joint effort by Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research, Avantea, Dvùr Královē Zoo and KWS, a team of veterinarians headed by Dr. David Ndeereh from KWS and Prof. Thomas Hildebrandt from Leibniz successfully harvested 10 eggs from Najin (5 eggs) and Fatu (5 eggs) on Thursday 22nd August.

After this successful harvest, 7 eggs (4 from Fatu and 3 from Najin) were on August 25th, successfully matured and artificially inseminated with frozen s***m previously harvested from northern white rhino bulls Suni and Saut. The outcome of this is to develop embryos that will be transferred into a surrogate mother of southern white rhino origin.

The lion (Panthera leo) is one of the four big cats in the genus Panthera, and a member of the family Felidae. With some males exceeding 250 kg (550 lb) in weight,[4] it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger. Wild lions currently exist in sub-Saharan Africa and in Asia Lions live for 10–14 years in the wild, while in captivity they can live longer than 20 years. In the wild, males seldom live longer than 10 years, as injuries sustained from continual fighting with rival males greatly reduce their longevity

A newborn mountain gorilla takes refuge in its mother's back in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park. Female mountain gorillas give birth about once every four years to a single offspring. What follows is a harsh existence and, according to researchers, about one out of three gorilla babies does not survive how sad can this be

WHENEVER the name ‘Mau’ is mentioned, the first thing that comes to mind is the controversy surrounding the encroachment of the forest , but that is just a tip of the iceberg. The depleting waters of the Mara River which has its source in the Mau Forest is a disaster waiting to happen
If not addressed urgently, it may lead to substantial losses not only in the tourism circuit in the mara, but it could become an environmental disaster for thousands who depend on it. The effects of the depleting water levels of the perennial river such as decreasing vegetation are already being felt by the people who live around it. The river is the lifeline for one million Kenyans and Tanzanians and two million wildebeest and zebra that depend on it not to mention the predators who feel on them

Ol Doinyo Lengai (“Mountain of God” in Masai) towers above the Rift Valley in a remote corner of northern Tanzania. It is the only volcano in the world to release natrocarbonatite lava—highly fluid lava that erupts at roughly half the temperature of more common basaltic volcanoes. Bizarre geologic formations develop as the lava rapidly hardens and decays.
