Southern Ground Hornbills: (Bucorvus leadbeateri)

Habitat and range: the southern ground hornbill can be found as far south as northern south Africa to Kenya. they live in savanna vegetation and require large trees to nest.

Breeding: They are monogamous and form long-lasting pair bonds. Each breeding pair is assisted by at least two other birds, a behavior known as cooperative breeding. only the dominant pair in the group will breed.

Nesting: They nest in high tree cavities or shallow cavities in cliffs. The nest is lined with dry leaves and grasses.

Eggs and Incubation: The female lays 1 to 3 white eggs, but usually, only one chick is raised. The eggs are incubated for 40-45 days by the female, who is fed by group members during this period.

Helpers: The breeding pair is always assisted by other birds, usually male offspring from previous clutches, who help with feeding and protecting the chicks.

Spotted hyena genitalia:
The spotted hyena (crocuta crocuta) possesses a unique reproductive anatomy..the female spotted hyena has for a long time been termed a "hermaphrodite " because it has both sexual organs..but is it so?
Pseudo p***s: the spotted hyenas a pseudo p***s which largely resembles a male genitalia in both appearance and size and also is an elongated cl****is
This serves a birth canal during birth of offsprings
However, during the process of giving birth, the pseudo p***s makes the birthing process complicated.
in this photo below, A is the pseudo p***s

Why is the Waterbuck one of the least predated antelope?
well, let's first understand some facts about predators.
PREDATORS choose their prey based on various factors such as availability, size of the prey, effort needed to capture the prey and nutritional value.
now waterbucks are less preferred due to these factors.
1. Strong Scent: Waterbucks secret a greasy substance from their sweat glands which gives them a very distinct musky smell which is thought to be unpleasant and unappealing to predators
2. Habitat: Waterbucks as the name suggests inhabit water sources such as stagnant ponds and swamps. presence of large mass of water hinders successful hunts and this acts as a defense mechanism
3. Social behaviour: Waterbucks ae social antelopes and live in groups, living in group can inhibit chances of predation due to strength in numbers
4. Size and strength: Waterbucks are relatively large mammals with males weighing close to 300kgs. this size and strength may not be worth the effort put by a predator in relation to the gain.
