The Jacaranda Lake Elementaita Hotel is approximately one hour thirty minutes’ drive by road from Nairobi and 29kms from Nakuru town thus making it quite quick to access. The peasants who live in the neighborhoods of the lake eke out a living by scooping out the sedimentary deposits on the shores of the lake, which they sell along the highway in bags to livestock owners. Lake Elementaita is unprotected, but all is not lost. To the west of the lake Lord Delamere’s 53,000 acre Soysambu Ranch. The Delamere estate has protected a portion of the lake. The ranch has more than 10,000 wild animals, including buffaloes, impalas, warthogs, leopards, jackals, zebras and other species of birds, some quite rare. An environmental conservation lobby group, the friends of Lake Nakuru, has been supportive of activities geared towards the protection of both the flora and fauna within the lake and its water catchmen
