Let’s talk cocktails! 🍹

At Spirit of Tembo, we serve up drinks made to bring out the best of the African sunset and the calm of the evening. Each cocktail has fresh, local flavors - think mango, lime, and even a hint of wild herbs. Every drink here tells a little story, crafted carefully to relax you after a day spent exploring. Imagine sipping on a cool tropical drink while looking out over the savannah, or a classic martini made just right. Whether you want something fruity, tangy, or smooth, there’s a drink for everyone.

Here’s to great cocktails, amazing sunsets, and memorable moments with us at Spirit of Tembo!

Let me share a bit of the thrill from today. Standing by the watchtower at Spirit of Tembo in Lemek Conservancy, our watchful daytime askari, Mr. Latinoi Tompoi, spotted lions moving close to camp. In seconds, he had us rushing out with our cameras, and just a two-minute drive from camp, we found ourselves right in the middle of an intense scene. Seven lions - two lionesses and five nearly-grown cubs - were laying low in the tall grass, eyes fixed on a group of unsuspecting warthogs not far off.

If you’ve ever watched warthogs, you know they’re like the “Kasongo yeye” trend - darting away one moment and forgetting their escape plan the next. Our star warthog, Mr. V16 Engine, kept trotting back toward the lions as if he had nothing to worry about. Little did he know, the lions were just waiting for him to get close enough.

Then, in perfect sync, one lion decided to break the silence, scattering the warthogs and sending Mr. V16 sprinting towards a waiting lioness. Within seconds, she sprang forward, effortlessly closing the gap and ending the chase with a swift, powerful catch. She watched her family closely, and called them for the feast to come.

Experiences like this are why Spirit of Tembo is so special. Just minutes from camp, we witness the raw, powerful side of nature up close, all thanks to our sharp-eyed staff and the incredible wildlife that calls this place home.

Today, we watched a tiny cub, barely five weeks old, face a huge challenge - a rock climb! With eyes still a bit hazy and paws that didn’t quite cooperate, it kept slipping and then starting again, fully committed to its ‘mountain.’ We couldn’t help but silently cheer it on.

Nearby, the sun was setting behind a lone acacia tree, painting the sky in warm shades of orange. The acacia stood steady, like a silent guardian watching over the cub’s clumsy efforts. The whole scene felt both wild and calm, playful and timeless.

Together, this young cub’s little journey and the golden sunset painted a picture of life in its purest form: small victories and quiet beauty, all in the savannah under one sky.

There’s something powerful about the stare of a lion. This morning, while on our game drive, we came across a lion resting in the shade of an old tree. As we approached, it slowly lifted its head and looked directly at us. Its golden eyes were sharp and steady, almost like it was studying us. For a moment, everything felt still.

The lion didn’t move a muscle, just kept staring, and there was a quiet understanding between us. It was a mix of curiosity and confidence; a look that seemed to say, ‘I see you, but I’m not afraid of you.’ Being in the presence of such a creature makes you feel both small and incredibly lucky.

Today, during our game drive in Lemek Conservancy, we had quite an encounter. We spotted a cheetah lying lazily in the field, soaking up the afternoon warmth. We stopped and watched, cameras ready, whispering to each other not to make a sound. But it seemed like the cheetah was in no rush to entertain us. It stretched out, yawned, and looked at us with what felt like a slightly bored expression, almost as if it was saying, ‘You’re all here for me?’

After a while, the cheetah decided to put on a little show. It got up and started walking gracefully, each step so elegant, like it was on a catwalk. Its eyes glinted in the soft light, and it kept giving us these side glances that made us chuckle, like it knew it was the star of the evening. And then came the moment. Jackson, always quick with his camera, captured a perfect shot of the cheetah against the setting sun. The golden light painted the whole scene, making the cheetah look almost magical.

Of course, that kicked off a mini-competition among us. Everyone thought their picture was the best, and we couldn’t stop comparing. One claimed their shot captured the “soul” of the cheetah, another insisted their picture had the ‘perfect angle.’ In the end, we all agreed on one thing - it was a cheeky and unforgettable evening, where the cheetah seemed to have just as much fun with us as we did with it.

During one of our game drives, our guide, Moses, saw something special and captured it on video. He noticed a lion moving slowly through the grass, its large paws barely making a sound. The lion stopped, looked back, and then turned around. Moses watched closely, and that’s when he saw why the lion had turned. Lying a little way behind was a small cub, waiting for its mother.

The lion walked over, picked up the cub gently in its mouth, and carried it to a safer spot. It was a simple, beautiful act of care, showing the strong bond between mother and cub. Moses said in the wild, every action has a purpose, and this was a mother’s way of protecting her young. Interesting sight.

Last evening, after an engaging day, I decided to rest in my tent at Spirit of Tembo. As I was just starting to relax, I heard some strange sounds nearby. At first, I wasn’t sure what it was, but as I focused, the deep, powerful roars made it clear that it could be lions. I couldn’t just stay in my tent, so I called a few of the staff to join me for a quick look around, just to see what was going on.

As we quietly made our way out, we didn’t have to go far. Right next to tent number 4, we spotted a pride of four lions. They had just brought down a baby giraffe and were in the middle of their feast. It was a raw, wild scene, something you can only witness out here in the savannah. The power of nature was right in front of us. We stood there, mesmerized by the sight of these magnificent creatures, so close to our camp, completely at ease in their environment.

After a while, we quietly returned to camp, letting the lions enjoy their meal in peace. Now we have lions as our new neighbours, roaming near Spirit of Tembo. Hopefully, their arrival won’t scare off the leopard that’s been hanging around lately. Lol he has been a regular visitor these past few days, keeping to himself and adding his own quiet charm to the area. It’s moments like these that remind us how truly special it is to be so close to the wild, where every day brings a new adventure.

Tembo by Jackson, l’Identité Massaï!
