THE LIONESS AND THE CUB
->Lionesses in a pride often have cubs around the same time as each other.

->Although they are usually referred to as cubs, lion babies can also be called whelps and lionets.

->They look after them in a group, known as a 'crèche' which helps to keep them safe from predators – meat-eating animals.

->Lionesses will instinctively do everything they can to protect their cubs from aggression by the male lions and at times fight even to their death.

->Male lions form coalitions, usually among brothers from the same litter to gain an advantage in territorial defense and compete for mating rights.

->In the absence of a strong dominant male, lionesses are even less likely to successfully challenge such coalitions in defending their cabs

->Lionesses will take care of their cubs until they reach the age of two or three. At this age, the cubs are called sub-adults.

->By age three both male and female lions are fully grown. Males will soon leave their natal pride and females usually remain.

WHAT IS A PORCUPINE?
*The word porcupine means “quill pig” in Latin; however, porcupines are large rodents with no relation to pigs.
*Porcupines are the largest and heaviest of all African rodents.
*The head is roundish and rather domed, with a blunt muzzle and small eyes and ears.
*The legs are short and sturdy, and each foot has five toes, all equipped with powerful claws.
*Their most recognizable feature is, of course, its quills. Quill length varies on different body parts, ranging from 2.5 to 30.5 centimeters (1 to 12 inches).
*Usually, the quills lie flat against the body, but if danger threatens, they raise and spread them. Scales on quill tips lodge in the skin like fishhooks and are difficult to pull out.
*New quills grow in to replace lost ones.

GREAT WHITE PELICAN (A perfect Birding Safari in Kenya)
The Great White Pelican is also known as the Eastern White Pelican, Rosy Pelican or White Pelican. These elegant birds have their perfect habitat in Kenya. Concentrations are found at the Kenyan salt lakes in the Rift Valley, where they feed on larger fish. They’re equipped with an enormous pink and yellow bill, and a dull pale-yellow gular pouch. The bird is highly sociable and often forms large flocks. It is well adapted for aquatic life. October to April is the best time of the year to go birdwatching in Kenya.

GREY-CROWNED CRANES
*The grey-crowned cranes are closely related to the black-crowned cranes.

*The two species can be distinguished by genetic evidence, calls, and plumage.

*They inhabit the savannahs and marshlands of eastern and southern Africa.

* The cranes are omnivores, eating plants, seeds, grain, insects, frogs, worms, snakes, small fish, and the eggs of aquatic animals.

*The bird is non-migratory and is most abundant in Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.

*It is the National bird of Uganda represented on its national flag

*This most elegant bird among the 15 species of cranes, is now listed as endangered.

*Kenya is one of the countries hosting a majority of the species' population.

*However, its estimated population (in Kenya) in the 1980s was around 35,000 but is currently down to less than 10,000.

*The massive shrinking of the bird population is due to human activities such as water abstraction, human encroachment, deforestation of catchment areas, and siltation.

*The above activities are detrimental to the grey-crown cranes' survival made worse by climate change effects, especially on their crucial breeding areas.

*One of such main breeding points and severely affected habitat in Kenya is Lake Ol’ Bolosat in Nyandarua County.
