This giraffe species was introduced to Lake Nakuru National Park in 1977. Its body markings are significantly darker and larger. The demarcation lines appear to have a yellow-cream to tint them. Another distinct factor is that the Rothschild Giraffe has no spots from the knee down, described by some people as having cream socks.

This antelope species has a powerful physique with elegant markings on its body. It can survive in dry and harsh conditions since its body can store water which raises its body temperature to avoid perspiration.

Kenya's capital, Nairobi, is the ONLY capital city in the world that boasts of hosting a national park within it. Most wildlife can be found here except the elephant due to its smaller size compared to other out-of-town national parks.

The warm alkaline water in these lakes consists of abundant blue-green algae, especially in the rainy seasons, making it the most ideal time to watch the flamingos. Even though heavy rainfall over the years has reduced these bird's numbers, you can spot quite a number of flamingos in either of these lakes.

The great wildebeest migration in Kenya is best viewed from July to October - annually. This is the period when the renowned 'river crossings' of the wildebeests and zebras, are most likely to happen. The gnu and zebras migrate for greener pastures from Northern Serengeti in Tanzania into Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya.

These two renowned Conservancies in Kenya, host these critically endangered rhino species. Of the 3 sub-species of the Black Rhino, that is, the South-Western, the Southern, and the Eastern, Ol Pejeta hosts the latter at a staggering population of 165.

Lewa Conservancy on the other hand hosts a population of 244.

Kenya once hosted 20,000 black rhinos in the 1960s, but we've been reduced to 'dismal' figures due to rampant poaching over the years.

Conservation efforts are alive and continue to thrive through all tourists and well-wishers.

Did you know that the color-based naming of the white rhino and black rhino likely emanated from a mistranslation of the Afrikaans word for “wide,” denoting the white rhinoceros’ broad mouth. The white rhino is more accurately referred to as the square-lipped rhinoceros. The black rhino’s pointed upper lip lends to its other name — hook-lipped rhinoceros — and is an adaptation that allows black rhinos to pull at leaves as it browses different types of shrubland vegetation. Because of its wider mouth, the white rhino is better suited as a grazer.

09/09/2022

Cape Buffalo (widely found in Eastern and Southern Africa) are often pictured covered in mud with a bird on their back. The mud helps buffalo get rid of ticks and parasites that latch onto their skin. Birds such as oxpeckers, for example, ride on the back of the buffalo and eat lice, fleas, and other parasites while getting a lift.

Buffalo spend most of the year in herds of anywhere between 50 and 500, but that number jumps up into the thousands in the Serengeti during the rainy season. Gathering in such large groups helps dissuade predators  like lions, leopards, hyenas, and African wild dogs. Older male buffalo, though, often strike out in smaller clusters or on their own. Meanwhile, calves spend up to a year and a half suckling and are completely dependent on their mothers during this time.
