Largest handmade Kyrgyz shyrdak in Kyrgyzstan, and possibly in the world was made in At_Bashy. 10 meters in diameter, weighing 300 kilos, 22 craftsmen worked on it.

In 2014, Manas epic was added on behalf of Kyrgyzstan as a UNESCO world heritage.It contains record 500 000 lines, making it the longest epic in the world that describes Kyrgyz history through its epic heroes.
Sayakbai Karalaev dubbed as Kyrgyz Homer, all his life recited Manas epic. Manas epic has mystic powers that can influence not only people who are listening to it, but also can change weather conditions. Joseph Stalin during World War 2 summoned Saiakbai Karalaev with a charter plane to Moscow so that he could recite Manas epic to soldiers who were about to sent off to the front lines.

Hundreds of local artisans will bring out their shyrdak masterpieces, some to exhibit and others to sell. You can find some amazing works of art that can be added to your home decor collection.

Shyrdak is a handmade felt carpet that is made from the sheep wool, a painstaking process that stretch from months to years as every single element is made by hand. The figures in the patchwork carry a hidden message that the shyrdak maker hides in her work. So, if you are buying a shyrdak ask the story behind it.

At Kochmon Adventures we also incorporate visits to shyrdak makers and other local artisans in our tours.

As i stood on top of the 14 meter tall Burana tower i looked over the surrounding lush green fields of grass that stretched to the foothills of Kyrgyz Ala-Too mountain range. It was unfathomable for me that once under my feet stood Balasagyn city, capital of Kara-Khanid Khanate that took up over 20 square kilometers of these fields, with fortified walls built around it. The Burana tower was part of a 40 meter tall minaret of a central mosque located at the heart of the city and along with other administrative buildings and courtyards it was surrounded by another row of fortified walls.
The Karakhanid state flourished from 9th-12th centuries, the surviving structures were built around those dates.

Yesterday, i stopped by the Uni-Yurt shop located inside Tash-Rabat Store on Gorkiy street to look at this new product that was an immediate hit in Bishkek. Store Manager Cholpon shared the story of the conception of Uni-Yurt and the interesting facts about the co-founders. is roughly 30 centimeters (12 inches) in diameter, sized down version of traditional yurts built in a lego style by attaching pieces together in the right order. What is so amazing about this product, is that it is built in the same way as you would build the real Kyrgyz Yurt. You have kanats or wings that spread out and make the walls, and on top of it rests the vertical stick rafters that all align in the proper hole on the or the circular skylight in the middle of the roof of Kyrgyz Yurt. The assembly of the real Kyrgyz Yurt takes several hours for a group of 4-6 people, and it gets confusing if you are doing it for the first time. At Travel some travelers show interest in how Kyrgyz Yurt is built, and sometimes the lack of theoretical knowledge makes the task overwhelming. I would suggest to everyone who wants to learn more about Kyrgyz nomadic culture, to purchase one Uni-Yurt and have family fun time by putting it together and if you succeed, try it out on a real Kyrgyz Yurt in the Tien-Shan mountains of Kyrgyzstan. For who have survived and adapted to the harsh sub-arctic winter climates of mountains where -40C, -45C is a normal winter,meat is an essential ingredient of daily diet, some more, some less. Oftentimes, local hosts are cornered up when i tell them about vegetarian travelers who requested meals without meat."What is there to cook without meat?"-i hear the puzzled host's voice over the phone. Upon visiting a relative in summer jailoo, it is a local tradition for the host to slaughter an entire sheep to show the honor for the guests,and then to have it cooked on an open fire all night and eat past midnight with kymyz. For Noble Kyrgyz people tradition comes first, and in the heart of Central Asia, millennia old nomadic culture of Kyrgyz Nation will stand the test of time.

The cold cyclone is rolling into Kyrgyzstan after a few rainy days, it finally snowed yesterday. Although we didn't see much snow in Bishkek, in Chon Alay province(Osh region) it snowed up to 20-25 centimeters,making it difficult for the farmers who still have their potato crops to have harvested. Nine shepherds got trapped in Ak-Talaa province's (Naryn region) summer pasture where one of the shepherds tragically died trying to make it to his winter farm. Secretary of Emergency was not able to send a helicopter due to the heavy fogs in the mountain areas.

Grigorievka gorge Trip. I have my uncles from my father side live in the town of Grigorievka and since my childhood i would hear about the beautiful Grigorievka gorge, which is famed to be one of the popular tourist destinations on the northern shore of lake Issikkul. This year our stay in Cholpon-Ata city coincided with other relatives vacationing in the same town so we decided to have a picnic at the famed Grigorievka gorge.
If coming from Bishkek, 285 kilometers of mostly asphalted highway till the Grigorievka town, then rough and windy 12 kilometers up the busy gorge full of vans, cars and myriads of horses and donkeys. This place is very popular with Russian and Kazakh travelers. To me, the prices were through the roof, so much so that it is the most expensive place i have visited in all of Kyrgyzstan. For instance, to hold to take a picture with an eagle 5 $ USD. To ride a horse for one hour 20$ uSD, for an entire day 120$ USD! In other parts of Kyrgyzstan, you can rent a horse for an entire day for 20$ USD.We rented a yurt from noon till evening for 70$ USD,
Apart from that it is a nice place worth visiting with several small lakes at the top of the gorge. The river has croppy in it for fishing. Also from Chon Kemin there is a 3 day trail that brings you to Giorgievka gorge, but there is a pass in the middle and a river that must be crossed in the morning hours when it's low.
