🎤📸 Meet our Judge!

As we roll out the judging phase of Eyes on Cambodia, we caught up with one of our judges, Sonya Duck, who’s also the founder of Urban Forage Food and Art Tours, one of our Gold Sponsors, to hear her reflections on this year’s submissions. Here’s what she had to say:

✨ What stood out to you the most while judging the entries?
“I would say the photographers’ ability to capture unexpected moments that felt both authentic and thoughtfully composed. Whether it was the way light played across a subject, a unique perspective on a familiar scene like Angkor, or the raw emotion in someone’s expression, there was a sense of intention and creativity in each frame.”

📸 Were there some specific themes or subjects you did not expect?
“I was expecting to see entries showcasing our spectacular major attractions—Angkor Wat, beaches, mountains, etc.—but I was pleasantly surprised to see entries highlighting everyday Cambodian life. Things we take for granted and have forgotten to stop and admire living here in the Kingdom.”

🌄 Was there a moment in the judging process that felt particularly challenging?
“I think for me a challenging part of the process was balancing technical merit with creativity and narrative impact.”

🎨 On the Diversity and Creativity in Submissions:
“I was blown away by the diversity and the creativity in the submissions. It’s inspiring to see photographers explore such a wide range of styles, perspectives, and storytelling techniques.”

💡 Advice for Future Entrants:
“When entering future photography competitions, remember that storytelling is key. A powerful image doesn’t just capture what’s there; it conveys a mood, sparks curiosity, and evokes emotions. Focus on creating photos that go beyond technical perfection.

Don’t be afraid to take risks—sometimes the most unconventional shots are the ones that leave the strongest impression. And finally, stay true to your own style and vision; authenticity resonates more than a technically perfect photo.”

📷 Phnom Penh through the lens of JB, , a talented photographer, who happens to also be one of our amazing food and art guides. JB has a passion for art and an eye for detail.

1. We love how he has captured a local fruit seller with and power struggle mural in the background!

2. A street pup getting in on the action with mural in the background.

3. Action shot with an exceptional mural seemingly unnoticed.

4. Black and whites down back alleys.

5. Rooftops dwarfed by sky scrapers.

Check out JBs page or book a Morning Market or Street Art Tour or an Afternoon of Contemporary Art Tour to see PPs art scene through his eyes!

5 tips on capturing mouth-watering food photos!

1. Colour contrast - Aim for vibrant contrasting colours to make your food POP.

2. Experiment with different angles. Sometimes shooting from above works best, while other times, a 45-degree angle works best.

3. Depth of field. Use a shallow depth of field, blurring the background, drawing the focus to the star - the food!

4. Natural light. Choose a natural light where possible, avoiding harsh overhead lighting or direct sunlight.

5. Texture. Highlight the texture of the food by shooting close up. This can create a more immersive experience for the viewer.

Most importantly, experiment and have fun. Be that friend/partner/guest that has to take photos of everything before anyone can start eating, and dont forget to tag us!

🤔Wondering when the best time to come to Cambo is?

🥳In short, every month has its advantages, but here is a quick guide:

🤑Nov-Feb - Coolest months, no rain, but also peak season so things can be more pricey, like accommodation.

🌞Mar-April - Hottest months, right before the rains start again. We also celebrate Khmer New Year in April, which is super fun!

🌧May-Nov - Rainy season, usually just a quick tropical downpour in the afternoon. Advantage is that the whole country is verdant and beautiful. Definitely the prettiest time of year to visit!
