1. Lions : Guarding the staircases located on the cardinal point of temple. Lions protected the main sanctuary against evil spirits.

2. Nagas : These fierce- looking snakes ( cobras with multiple heads) guard the terraces and the causeways, ready to attack the evil spirits. Traditionally associated with water nagas guard the world’s treasure kept in the Cosmic ocean. Garuda is their enemy.

3. Dvarapalas : Guardians of the gates, always arranged in pairs, they were represented on the walls of the 10th century sanctuaries. In the Jayavaraman VII period they stood on each side of doorways and Stairways with, to the left, a benevolent looking guardian and, to the right, a malevolent looking guardian with round eyes. This arrangement is also found at Angkor Thom’s gates where the devas ( Gods) holding the snake are on the left side, the Asuras ( demons) on the right side.
