Quantifying team chemistry to maximize team performance is a huge challenge considering there may be dozens of formulas that each produce the same result. On the one hand, if every athlete on a team was exactly the same, they would probably mesh very well together because they would share identical

Notice pic 1: hips square pre coil/load. Pic 2: shows front back pocket to pitcher slightly, belly button slightly to catcher, k**b to catcher. It’s more of a pelvic turn and not a shoulder turn during load phase. This allows you to uncoil with great force. Get bigger! Any way we can create more force to the softball will just add distance to the result. You only need to hit it 200 feet!

Only 1% of MLB hitters squish the bug. Why? It’s bad and no longer ever said! So stop!

Hitting Mythbuster #1: Squish The Bug.

About 1% of MLB hitters squish the bug for rotation or at contact. About 25% have their back foot completely off the ground, about 40% are up on their toe and another 25% drag their back foot/toe.

Some coaches of younger hitters will advocate squishing the bug as a way of introducing the concept of hip rotation. I understand the logic of this, but in my experience, even the youngest hitters can achieve proper hip rotation & don't need to use squishing the bug to do so.

My friend Dan Farnsworth did a great job of explaining for young people to understand: "You throw a ball; you transfer your weight to the leg closest to your target. You run your weight transfers. You throw a punch, your weight transfers. You throw a Frisbee, your weight transfers."

This myth is basically dead but I thought I would add it to the Mythbuster Series.

November tip: How do we check transfer? Pic 1 is Megan Wiggins at the launch position. Notice we drew line at back hip. Pic 2 we drew a second line at back hip at contact. Notice the distance traveled during transfer. If you want to create the max force to the softball then we need this. No more sit and spin or squash the bug! Pic 3 we drew line to show head over knee posture after transfer. We want transfer to occur under control with good posture. No lunging at ball!

I believe in getting into that back hip during the load phase. I often tell kids to get big. Hitting is timing so I believe you can get as big as you want as long as you understand timing. Getting big allows max transfer! Max transfer gives you max force to the ball! The result? Serious power! The pic below is a pic of one of my new students Katie Parker from Finesse. In one lesson we took Katie from a no stride to this and I believe she will get crazy good results! Her first tourney after the change was a success! - Darrick Brown
