Congratulations to Brijesh “BJ” Lawrence on being inducted into Doane University Hall Of Fame.

Lawrence, an SKN Olympian, found his way to Doane University after discovering his passion for track and field. Previously, he was a football player at Nebraska-Omaha but later transferred to Dana College to pursue track and field. Lawrence excelled, becoming a four-time All-American in 2010, but faced a setback when Dana College closed shortly after he won his first national title in the 100m.

Lawrence then joined Doane University where he continued to shine. In 2011, he earned five All-American honors, won three national titles, and claimed two more national titles during the indoor 2012 season. Although an injury prevented him from competing at Nationals during his senior year, Lawrence still holds several school records.

Lawrence represented St. Kitts and Nevis at the World Championships in 2011 and participated in two Olympics (2012, 2016), earning four medals as a member of the 4x100m relay team. His impressive achievements have solidified his status as a record-holder and a celebrated athlete both at university and internationally.

Today would have been Dr. Maya Angelou’s 95th birthday. When I awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011, I talked about how this phenomenal woman changed the world with her words. Today is a good day to re-share it:

As a girl, Marguerite Ann Johnson endured trauma and abuse that actually led her to stop speaking. But as a performer, and ultimately a writer, a poet, Maya Angelou found her voice. It’s a voice that’s spoken to millions, including my mother, which is why my sister is named Maya.

By holding on, even amid cruelty and loss, and then expanding to a sense of compassion, an ability to love—by holding on to her humanity—she has inspired countless others who have known injustice and misfortune in their own lives. I won’t try to say it better than Maya Angelou herself, who wrote that:

History, despite its wrenching pain,
Cannot be unlived, and if faced with courage,
Need not be lived again.
Lift up your eyes upon
The day breaking for you.
Give birth again
To the dream . . .
