Someone asked me today, what makes the Nevis Mango Festival my favorite. I want to give that reflection some true justice that I don’t think I was able to make earlier.
The Nevis Mango Festival is core St. Kitts and Nevis culture. From the mango tasting, to the mango dishes, the mom & pop shops and the food fair. It is all true to our federation. Not only does it give our visitors a taste of what it’s like to be a Nevisian, or Kittitian; it takes me back to times when life was simple pleasures for the palette and enjoyment for the soul. Don’t get me wrong, life in the Caribbean is full of simple pleasures, but the Nevis Mango Festival brings that intentional focus to meet, greet, eat and indulge in the mango season before it ends.
Why? Because it would be a real shame to let the entire season pass without truly tasting it. Not because we forget, but because we get caught up – caught up in the motion of our days, the responsibilities, the routines, the need to endure. Yes, even here in the Caribbean we be LIFING too.
The Nevis Mango Festival is that gentle nudge to our soul to return, a delicious reminder to pause, savor and appreciate what has always been ours. The sticky fingers and juice running down your elbows. It reminds me of why I love mangoes – not just for their sweetness, but for the memories, the culture and the connection they hold.
So, when the festival comes around each year, I make sure to indulge, celebrate, and reconnect. Because the mangoes will ripen and fall, the season will pass, and that is one thing I don’t ever want to be a missed opportunity. I never want to take the mango season for granted, and you shouldn’t either.
