Baekyangsa was founded during the reign of Baekjae King Mu (632 C.E.) by Ven. Yeohwan, and was originally called Baekamsa Temple. The name was later changed to Jeongtosa and then back to Baekamsa alternately, until the latter part of the 19th century, when the temple was finally called Baekyangsa (White Sheep Temple). This is because in those days, white sheep used to come down from the mountain to listen to the monks chanting and then go back up.

Especially this temple is popular for photographers during the fall season to take a gorgeous photo.

Jangseong Hinoki Tree Forest

National Center for Forest Activities, located in Jangseong, is a place where people play the second fiddle to the lush trees of the area. Set aside your burdens and your daily life for a moment, join the trees brimming with life, and take the opportunity to rediscover yourself.

Dedication for Every Tree
Every tree here is grown with care and dedication, and takes on ever greater lushness and green vitality as time goes by. It takes a lot of time and effort for a tree to be raised: one must ensure that the tree has adequate water and sunlight, and one must also prune and provide care for diseases. But as trees take root, they eventually create lush forests. From that moment onward, the forest becomes a sanctuary for people, a place where people can restore their body and mind. The same goes for the National Center for Forest Activities, Jangseong.

National Center for Forest Activities, Jangseong consists of Forest Education Center and Forest Healing Center. Forest Education Center is in Bangjangsan Mountain while Forest Healing Center in Chungnyeongsan Mountain. The former mainly offers activity- oriented programs such as eco-tour, relationship building, and crafting by using the elements of the forest. Meanwhile, the latter focuses more on relaxing the body and mind and getting energy through the environmental factors of the forest. The cypress forest of Chungnyeongsan Mountain equipped with Forest Healing Center is a priceless forest asset formed over a long time by Im Jongguk also known by his penname Chuam. He started to plant cypress and cryptomeria on a desolate private land in 1956, which marked the beginning of the forest. Currently, the forest has an area of approximately 2.4 million m2, becoming home to 2.5 million trees. It was listed as one of the “Top 100 Beautiful Roads in Korea” by the Ministry of Construction and Transportation and as one of the “Beautiful Forests to Be Preserved for the 22nd Century” by the Korea Forest Service.

Do you know the differences between Korean Cherry Blossom and Japanese Cherry Blossom ?

Cherry blossoms, known as Sakura in Japan and 벗꽃 (beotkkot) in Korea, are celebrated in both countries as a symbol of spring. However, there are some differences between the cherry blossoms in these two countries:

Species: The species most commonly seen worldwide, partly thanks to Japanese diplomacy, is the Somei-Yoshino, or Yoshino Cherry, which is an artificial hybrid from Japan. On the other hand, the King Cherry is a species native to South Korea. Taxonomists have yet to scientifically confirm the connection between the King Cherry and Yoshino Cherry.

Appearance: The flowers of the Yoshino Cherry are usually white or pale pink and have five petals. The King Cherry blossoms have a slightly different appearance, with a larger size and more showy compared to other cherry trees.

Origins Controversy: There has been some controversy over the origins of the cherry blossom trees. Some argue that the Yoshino Cherry may be related to the King Cherry, which is indigenous to Jeju Island in South Korea. However, this connection has not been scientifically confirmed.

Cultural Significance: Both countries have a deep cultural appreciation for cherry blossoms, which are celebrated with festivals during the blooming season. In Japan, the tradition of “hanami” involves picnicking under blooming cherry blossom trees. In Korea, cherry blossoms are celebrated with massive festivals and sightseeing

Remember, while there are differences, the beauty and cultural significance of cherry blossoms are universally appreciated in both countries. Enjoying the breathtaking sight of these trees in full bloom is a cherished springtime activity in both Japan and Korea

UNESCO place : Namhansanseong Fortress.

Namhansanseong was designed as an emergency capital for the Joseon dynasty (1392–1910), in a mountainous site 25 km south-east of Seoul. Built and defended by Buddhist monk-soldiers, it could accommodate 4,000 people and fulfilled important administrative and military functions. Its earliest remains date from the 7th century, but it was rebuilt several times, notably in the early 17th century in anticipation of an attack from the Sino-Manchu Qing dynasty. The city embodies a synthesis of the defensive military engineering concepts of the period, based on Chinese and Japanese influences, and changes in the art of fortification following the introduction from the West of weapons using gunpowder. A city that has always been inhabited, and which was the provincial capital over a long period, it contains evidence of a variety of military, civil and religious buildings and has become a symbol of Korean sovereignty.
