Pass Too Ashuu 3583 m.
This is perhaps the most beautiful active pass in Kyrgyzstan. It is famous not only for its beauty, but also for a 2.5 kilometer tunnel pierced through the Kyrgyz ridge at an altitude of 3200 meters and connecting the north and south of Kyrgyzstan. 🇰🇬🇰🇬🇰🇬
The tunnel was built in 1962, which now bears the name of the first minister of road transport and highways of the Kyrgyz SSR, Kusain Kolbaev. There is a legend that the chief engineer of the tunnel, having learned that two brigades drilling a tunnel to meet each other, may not meet in the right place due to his allegedly inaccurate calculations, he died of anxiety having received a heart attack several days before the significant meeting of the teams in the tunnel, which eventually met clearly where needed. Xs.) 👀
It is important that this was the first tunnel in Central Asia in high mountains.
With the advent of the tunnel, the old road through the Kyrgyz ridge may have remained in good condition as a spare, emergency. But, over time, they began to forget about her. Even today's drivers are unaware of its existence.
My first attempt to drive through the abandoned pass was in 2017. Moreover, from the north and south sides. Despite the fact that it was mid-summer, I could not get even close to the saddle of the pass because of the snow crust blocking the road, most likely formed as a result of the descent of the depressions.
We made the second attempt with a group of tourists in 2018. But this time another obstacle prevented the plan. A rockfall covered the entire road behind which several others could be seen.
This time we made another attempt to pass the old abandoned Too Ashuu pass in the hope that this road might have been cleaned after all. But unfortunately the road was in even worse condition and in addition we were not allowed by the snow crust, which blocked the road by 10 meters wide.
Summary. The old road through the Too Ashuu pass is abandoned and not passable for cars and motorcycles.

LONLY PASSES OF KYRGYZIA.
Kyrgyzstan is a mountainous country. This means the country of mountain roads and mountain passes. Most of the passes are very important for the country, so their condition is constantly monitored to keep them in working order.
But, in addition to the main directions, during the times of the USSR, quite a few other mountain roads were pierced in Kyrgyzstan, and therefore passes, which had different strategic goals. From cattle driving to military. Just imagine ! Operational transfer of military equipment, including tanks, over ridges up to 4000 m! And of course, only the Union could afford to keep these passes in working order. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, everything that was important became unimportant and unnecessary. Including mountain passes.
And they stand alone, watching from high on us, hoping that someday again, people will remember them.
In previous trips, we visited and were able to cross the famous Kok Airyk passes at 3980 m and Kegety pass at 3890 m, which have not been traveled for more than 20 years. With difficulty, but then we managed to get through. (The video is on YouTube)
Summary: both passes at that time were in a deplorable state and are passable only by motorcycle, foot, bicycle or horse. Perhaps now they are no longer passable even for moto. Because the slopes are crumbling all the time.
This time we decided to visit the passes To Ashu 3583 m, Jargart 3400 m, Terek 3376 m, and Kara-Bura 3300 m. We had 5 days for everything.
The purpose of the trip is to assess the condition of the passes and the possibility of transport through them.

Group of friends from France had time for vacation only in late October but they wanted to ride in Pamir mountain. And they did it even though the snow was approaching. It was the latest tour in the history of our motorcycle club. I mean motorcycle season was finish. We were worried that mountain passes up to 5000 meters high would close due to snow. But the group was successful and they drove from Bishkek to Dushanbe through the Pamir. One of the participants (Patrick) made a video and shared with us. We are doing this with you.
