Don Khong is the largest island of Laos. It is located in the very south of the country. It is part of the 4000 Islands (Si Phan Don in Laotian). Previously there were flights to and from Don Khong. About 25 years ago the flights stopped. Don Khong Airport was built in the past by order of the Americans as part of the war in Indochina. Planes from the US Air Force and the Laotian Royal Army left Don Khong and old people in the region still remember. Don Khong Airport was also known as LS07 (Lima Site 07). Now Don Khong is peaceful and little reminds of the wars that ravaged Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.

If you have more information about the airport and its history, let us know. It would be nice to know.

Travel2Laos visited the old runway in the dry season and made some photos and a video there (video in the next message).

Stupa close to Thatheng (Sekong province) to remember Mr. Ong Keo, a Alak man who was the leader of a rebellion against Siam and the French colonizers of present day Laos.
