Wetlands play a crucial role in our environment. They serve as essential habitats for fish, waterfowl, and various wildlife. Moreover, wetlands act as natural filters, cleaning polluted waters, and act as a buffer against the destructive forces of floods and storms.

In addition to their ecological functions, wetlands offer diverse recreational opportunities, including hiking, photography, and wildlife observation. Recognizing their numerous benefits, wetlands are now increasingly valued as productive and essential resources that deserve protection and restoration efforts.

The importance of wetlands lies in their ability to:

- Enhance water quality
- Provide homes for wildlife
- Sustain ecosystem productivity
- Mitigate coastal storm damage
- Offer recreational activities
- Contribute to improved water supply
- Serve as educational resources

As we celebrate this day, let's show support, protect, and encourage the preservation of these hidden gems. Our future well-being may very well depend on the conservation of these valuable wetland ecosystems.

๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฎ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would like to express my deep appreciation for everyone who contributed to the success of this year's bird counting initiative, which concluded on Sunday, October 8th.

First and foremost, I want to extend my gratitude to Dr Johnny Fenianos & Dr Carla Khater for their unwavering belief in our project and for providing invaluable support to ensure its realization through a partnership with Mr Marc Mady "WeBrand" and Mr Julien Viglione "ECO-MED", thank you all for your valuable support.

I would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Chady Yammine for his exceptional assistance on the field. He was consistently available to offer his support in any way necessary.

Furthermore, I want to express our appreciation to the Municipality of Zgharta Ehden and the Horsh Ehden Nature Reserve for their cooperation.

This year's bird count was truly remarkable, with the opportunity to meet new people, forge new friendships, and, most importantly, witness the remarkable diversity of raptors. Please refer to the attached image for specific numerical data, and we will soon share a comprehensive report, complete with comparisons to previous years.

In the interim, we will be sharing images and videos captured during the count to give you a taste of the 16 days we spent in Ehden.

We look forward to the possibility of coming together once again next year for another exciting bird count, potentially in a new location.

With gratitude.

๐™Š๐™ฃ ๐˜ฟ๐™–๐™ฎ ๐™๐™ค๐™ช๐™ง๐™ฉ๐™š๐™š๐™ฃ, the story was much like the past few days. The fog came in early and interrupted our bird count, despite a robust bird migration happening. The count had to stop around 11:30 AM. I waited, hoping the fog would clear and we could continue counting, but it didn't.

I got word that there were massive flocks of birds flying at lower altitudes, so I headed down to check it out. There were continuous chains of birds, specifically LSEs, all across the coastal plains. I tried to find a spot closer to the stream but couldn't, so I parked my car by the roadside. In just 15-20 minutes, I counted more than 2000 LSEs. This is a significant number that I miss when the fog blankets the higher mountains.

The bird numbers we've counted this year are surpassing previous years for many species, even though we've had fewer counting hours.

Check the numbers counted so far and we'll provide more detailed comparisons in the final report

Since Iโ€™ve been totally blind for the past 3 hours with a strong and heavy fog covering our post from all directions, and since I havenโ€™t posted about the previous counting days, Iโ€™ll use this time for a fast recap on the past 4 days.

Monday: I wasnโ€™t supposed to go to the spot, but I couldnโ€™t miss the smell of the ground after the first rain, and I had some hope that the weather would clear out for the rest of the day, which did not happen.
On my arrival, the wind was strong with a speed of 30km/hr, clouds covering the sky, and a low temperature of 13 ยฐC. I felt the rain coming in fast, so I kept my equipment ready to move fast, stayed for less than an hour and only got 1 species, a first-timer for this year that was sneaking amidst the fog and almost got away with it, their color perfectly blend with the fog, a male Pallid Harrier, what a sight flying under the rain.
Snapped a few pics and went back to the car.

Tuesday: A change in the scenery, slow wind, clear sky above, some fog on lower altitudes, temperature increases a bit to give a warm feeling.
Migration was on fire in the early hours, unfortunately, I arrived later than usual at the spot on that day due to car problems.
In just about 2 hours I had 2500 birds divided into 11 species, LSEs were the most abundant.
Around 12 the fog reached us and blocked our view, but that did not affect the migration in any way, I got more than one friend sending videos and pics from different lower areas watching huge numbers passing by.

Wednesday: Temperature dropped 1ยฐC, the wind was stronger than the day before, clear sky above.
On this day migration was really slow, but there were some new species despite the short time spent.
A Black-Winged Kite was an astonishing sight, rarely seen in migration, and 2 Montaguโ€™s Harrier, both of them first timers.
Around 11:00 the fog ruined the day.

Thursday: Finally, a day that was not ruined by the weather, I stayed on the spot till the last daylight.
It started with a sky full of clouds, but luckily the clouds were gone by noon.
The sky was busy throughout the day on multiple fronts, I got some great numbers for different species, but LSEs were again the most abundant.
The day ended around 6:15 with a total of 3600 birds from 16 species, which is also a good variety for the day.

Will be sharing the totals counted so far tonight, meanwhile enjoy the sunset from yesterdayโ€™s count.

Last 2 days of this yearโ€™s count, join us to witness the mesmerizing spectacle of Migration.
