When is Saint Lucia Independence Day?

1979 was when Saint Lucia became an independent state of the Commonwealth of Nations.

History of Saint Lucia Independence day

The Windward island now known as Saint Lucia was first discovered by Europeans in the late 15th or early 16th century. The first settlers were French and they named the island after Saint Lucia, a young Christian martyr who died during the persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire of 304 AD.

Unlike most countries, Independence Day is not the National Day of Saint Lucia; that takes place on 13th December, the Feast Day of Saint Lucia, who became the patron saint of the island.

The English first took control of the island in 1663, and control of the island changed 14 times, being ruled seven times by the French and seven times by the English. The change in ownership finally stopped with English control in 1814 as part of the Treaty of Paris which ended the Napoleonic Wars with Saint Lucia becoming a part of the British Windward Islands colony.

In 1958, Saint Lucia joined the West Indies Federation when the Islands colony was dissolved. In 1967, Saint Lucia became a self-governing island as one of the six members of the West Indies Associated States.

on February 22nd 1979, it gained full independence under Sir John Compton of the conservative United Workers Party (UWP), who later served as prime minister.

The Flag of Saint Lucia
The flag of Saint Lucia was adopted in 1967. The blue represents the sky and sea. The yellow is the sunshine and the black and white signifies the harmony between the white and black races on the island. The triangles represent the Pitons, the famous volcanic cones located in the southwest part of the island and the national symbol of Saint Lucia.

The 21st of February, the eve of independence is "National Colours Day". It is not a public holiday, but everyone is encouraged to wear something reflective of the national colours.

Independence Day starts with the annual military parade followed by the Independence address by the prime minister.

In the afternoon, a parade called "Annou We-y" takes place in Castries featuring various floats, characters, groups, organizations, and companies.

Castries was founded in 1650 by the French, who named it “Carénage,” which means “safe anchorage,” in reference to the city's deep water port. It adopted the name Castries in 1756 in honor of Charles Eugène Gabriel de La Croix, Marquis de Castries and Commander of a fleet of French ships.

This Old Sugar Mill with the Pitons in the background is located in the beautiful community of Choiseul home to the indigenous craft of coal pot manufacturing on the island and many local arts and crafts can be purchased at the roadside craft market, including grass place mats, market chairs, and local clay products; such as coal pots which are still widely used in many St. Lucian kitchens.

We shall overcome this crisis. We will ultimately defeat this epidemic. We will beat it with a spirit of solidarity and caring to keep this country safe and healthy so beautiful people like you can come enjoy sweet St Lucia again.,

How to Coping with stress during
the CoVid19 outbreak

It is normal to feel sad, stressed, confused, scared or
angry during a crisis.
Have conversations with people you trust can help. Contact your friends and family.
Avoid the use of alcohol, smoking, or other drugs to deal with
your emotions.
If you feel overwhelmed, please talk to a counsellor or health care worker.
Have a plan, where to go to and how to seek
help for physical and mental health needs if required.

Limit worry and agitation by lessening the time you
and your family spend watching or listening to media
coverage that you perceive as upsetting.

If you must stay at home, maintain a healthy lifestyle -
including proper diet, sleep, exercise and social contacts
with loved ones at home and by email, social media and phone with other family and friends.

Get the facts. Gather information that will help you
accurately determine your risk and loved ones so that you can take
reasonable precautions. Find a credible source you can
trust such as your Health department/agency in your country or WHO website.

Draw on skills you have used in the past that have
helped you to manage previous life’s adversities and use
those skills to help you manage your emotions during
the challenging time of this outbreak.

We will overcome this!

The well-known Sulphur Springs Park in Soufriere, Saint Lucia is the hottest and most active geothermal area in the Lesser Antilles. The Sulphur Springs Park is approximately 45 hectares and is billed as the Caribbean’s only drive-in volcano. A walk through the crater takes you past pools and hot springs bubbling and belching with sulphur-laden steam. Just outside the Springs, you can bathe in the warm sulphuric pools, reputed for its soothing effects. The Sulphur Springs forms part of the story of the creation of the entire Caribbean basin.

The main area of Sulphur Springs Park comprises numerous hot springs, bubbling mud pools and fumaroles (steam vents) in an area of strongly hydrothermally altered clay-rich rock approximately 200 m x 100 m in size. Many fumaroles have temperatures 100°C or hotter, and temperatures of up to 172°C have been recorded. Numerous studies have been carried out over the past 50 years to investigate the geothermal energy potential of Soufriere Sulphur Springs Park, to date, however, no attempt at exploitation has been made.

Geothermal systems such as Soufriere Sulphur Springs Park form when rainwater seeps into the ground where it is heated by hot rock. The hot water becomes buoyant, and rises back to the surface along cracks. In some places the water is heated so much that it rises as steam. The heat source for the Sulphur Springs Park geothermal system is probably the cooling magma body responsible for the young volcanism of the Soufrière Volcanic Centre.

The national or creole dress (The Madras) is a traditional Saint Lucian costume comprising five pieces. Also known as the national dress, it is worn by women and girls and is almost identical to the traditional costumes worn in other Caribbean countries, which were colonised by the French. It consists of a white cotton blouse (chimiz decolté) and an ankle length skirt (jip) trimmed with lace (bodwi angléz) and red ribbon. The skirt’s design includes two gathers to the lower half of the skirt. The most characteristic feature of this costume however, is the material used to make the short outer skirt and the accompanying headpiece. The material, known as the madras, is named after its place of origin, Madras, India and is believed to have been used daily in earlier times.

The madras headpiece (tèt anlè) is designed out of a square or rectangular piece cut for this purpose. Worn over the forehead it is creatively folded with a peak(s) extending from the base.

The head piece may be tied with up to four peaks, with the number of peaks signifying the availability of the woman for courtship.

one peak – I am single
two peaks – I am married
three peaks- I am widowed or divorced
four peaks – I accept everyone who tries

To complete the costume, a triangular satin scarf is pinned on the left shoulder with the apex over the elbow and the two ends tucked beneath the skirt’s waistline.

This elegant madras costume, or national dress is mostly worn during national activities such as Independence Day, National Day and Creole Day (Jounen Kwèyòl). It is also used for dancing the Quadrille (kwadril) a European inherited dance.
