Nature's symphony – Waterfalls in Sri Lanka

In the heart of Sri Lanka's lush landscapes, nature's symphony comes alive through the enchanting cascade of its waterfalls. Each descent, a graceful dance of liquid elegance, whispers tales of the island's rich biodiversity. Bambarakanda Falls, a crowned jewel, majestically plummets from the Horton Plains, epitomizing the untamed beauty of Sri Lanka's terrain. Ravana Falls, near Ella, weaves a tale of mystique with its ethereal veil, while Dunhinda Falls hides within a jungle sanctuary, inviting explorers to uncover its secrets. These waterfalls, like liquid poetry, embody the soul of the island. Standing before their thundering might, feeling the cool mist on your face, and witnessing the vibrant rainbows, is to commune with nature's profound forces. Sri Lankan waterfalls aren't just breathtaking sights; they are sanctuaries that beckon all to find solace and renewal in the embrace of their timeless beauty—a reminder that, in the heart of this island paradise, earth and water harmoniously entwine, inviting us to join the dance of creation.

Gal Viharaya-Polonnaruwa

The Gal Vihara, also known as Gal Viharaya, is a rock temple located in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka, dating back to the 12th century. Constructed by Parakramabahu I, it was originally named Uttararama. The temple's central feature is a large granite rock with four remarkable rock relief statues of the Buddha. These statues include a large seated figure, a smaller seated figure inside an artificial cavern, a standing figure, and a reclining figure. The carvings are celebrated as outstanding examples of ancient Sinhalese sculpting and carving arts, making the Gal Vihara the most visited monument in Polonnaruwa.
The sculptures at Gal Vihara exhibit a distinct style compared to those from the earlier Anuradhapura period, showcasing notable differences. There is debate among historians and archaeologists regarding the identity of the standing figure, with some suggesting it may depict the monk Ananda rather than the Buddha. Each statue maximizes the use of the rock's surface, and the heights of the figures seem to be determined by the natural height of the rock. Evidence suggests that each statue had its own image house, marked by the remains of brick walls at the site.
The Uttararama served as a significant location where Parakramabahu I convened a gathering of monks to purify the Buddhist priesthood. Subsequently, he formulated a code of conduct for the monks, which is recorded in an inscription on the same rock face containing the Buddha images. This historical context adds to the cultural and religious significance of the Gal Vihara, making it an important site in Sri Lanka's rich heritage.

Jaffna Fort

Near the coastal village of Gurunagar in Jaffna stands Jaffna Fort, a fascinating architectural gem constructed by the Portuguese between 1618 and 1625. Originally named the ‘Fortress of Our Lady of Miracles of Jafanapatão’ during Portuguese rule, its nomenclature was inspired by the adjacent church devoted to the Virgin Mary.
In 1658, the Dutch seized control of the fort, marking the end of Portuguese dominance in Sri Lanka. The Dutch subsequently expanded the fort, but in 1795, the British entered the scene, ousting the Dutch and taking over the fort. It remained a British garrison until 1948.
