The Galle Lighthouse (also known as the Pointe de Galle light) is the oldest light station in Sri Lanka, built in the mid-19th century and located within the walls of the Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The original Galle Lighthouse was founded by the British in 1848 and was the first shore lighthouse in the area, standing 24.5 meters high with a full view of Galle Harbour. In 1934, a devastating fire destroyed the old lighthouse. This led to the construction of the current lighthouse in 1939, which is taller than the original, 26.5 meters high and approximately 100 meters from its predecessor's site.

Changes over the years

The Halle Lighthouse is located approximately 4 kilometers from the city center of Halle and is built on ramparts, approximately 6 meters above road level, on a high point known as the Point Utrecht Bastion. The original lighthouse contained a glass prism placed in a mercury bath, which held the lamp level and allowed it to rotate without excessive friction. The lighthouse keepers were responsible for removing dirt and debris from the top of the bath, as well as periodically cleaning out the liquid mercury that exposed them daily to the highly toxic metal. However, today the lighting inside the Halle Lighthouse is fully automated and the responsible lighthouse keeper only needs to go upstairs to ensure its upkeep.

Ambuluwawa Tower is located in the suburbs of Gampola Town in Sri Lanka. There has been an increased popularity in recent times especially due to the breathtaking views you can experience when you climb to the top of the Ambuluwawa Tower. It is also known for its narrow spiral staircase which some visitors find challenging to climb. It is one of the coolest places to visit in Sri Lanka if you are up for the challenge.

Ella is a small town in the Badulla District of Uva Province, Sri Lanka governed by an Urban Council. It is approximately 200 kilometres (120 mi) east of Colombo and is situated at an elevation of 1,041 metres (3,415 ft) above sea level The area has a rich bio-diversity, dense with numerous varieties of flora and fauna. Ella is surrounded by hills covered with cloud forests and tea plantations. The town has a cooler climate than surrounding lowlands, due to its elevation. The Ella Gap allows views across the southern plains of Sri Lanka.
