The Esala Perahera in Kandy is one of the oldest and grandest of all Buddhist festivals in Sri Lanka, featuring dancers, jugglers, musicians, fire-breathers, and lavishly decorated elephants. This is held in Esala (July or August) which is the month that is believed to commemorate the first teaching given by the Buddha after he attained enlightenment. The Kandy Esala Perahera lasts for ten days while various festivities can be witnessed right throughout. The Sinhalese term ‘Perahera’ means a parade of musicians, dancers, singers, acrobats and various other performers accompanied by a large number of caparisoned Tuskers and Elephants parading the streets in celebration of a religious event.
This ritual is performed by carrying the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha through the streets of the Kandy city which is done with exceptional panache. This is considered as one of the most beautiful pageants in the Asia.

The oruwa has been around in Sri Lanka for thousands of years. It plays an important role in the lives of those who live near the sea, rivers and other water bodies. These sailing vessels have many purposes, such as being used for fishing, to cross rivers and lakes, and to transport cargo.
Oru are made of dugout wood such as jak, breadfruit, wild mango and teak trees. Interestingly, nails or iron are not used in the traditional oruwa.The narrow hull is a feature that helps it move with speed. There are several different types of oru in Sri Lanka. Each one has a specific purpose.
The simplest boat with a dugout hull and an outrigger is the Pila Oruwa. Used for rod fishing, laying nets and setting traps in the water, these boats are mostly seen in lagoons, lakes and rivers with still waters.
The Theppama is a log raft steered with long bamboo poles. Fishermen stand on this raft and cast nets into the waters.
The larger version of the Pila Oruwa is called a Dal Oruwa. This is specifically used for net fishing in lagoons.
With a capacity of holding ten people, Kattudel is a larger fishing craft. It has a thin and long design.
Bala Oruwa, also called the Ruwal Oruwa, has a square sail held up by bamboo poles. It has a single outrigger. The Bala oruwa is the fastest traditional sailing canoe in the world.
The Madel Oruwa is unique to Sri Lanka in design. It is used to carry the madela or seine net to the sea.
As you travel across Sri Lanka, look out the coast as well as near rivers, lagoons and lakes and spot one of these or even better, snap a photograph. The boats of Sri Lanka are truly unique.
