🔹Mihinthale

In the 3rd century BC, the area of Mihintale (mihinthalaya) was a thick jungle area inhabited by wild animals and was a hunting ground reserved for the royals. All this changed in 250 BC when the son of the Indian Emperor Asoka, Mahinda Maha Thero arrived at the Missaka Pauwa to meet King Devanampiyatissa for the first time and asked the famous questions to decide whether he is intelligent enough to understand the philosophy of the Buddha.

Initially Mahinda Maha Thero’s residence, but later Mihintale (mihinthalaya) became a main center for Theravada Buddhism and is considered the cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka and was developed throughout the millennia by many kings as a massive monastic complex complete with hospitals for the sick bhikkhus.

Mihinthale is a collection of four mountains each about 1000 feet in height.

They are

Mihinthalawa
Ath Vehera mountain
Anaikutti mountain
Rajagiri Lena mountain
Mihinthalawa is the main mountain where the Aradhana gala (The rock of invitation) and the main Mahaseya stupa is situated.

Mihintale is a mountain peak near Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka. It is believed by Sri Lankans to be the site of a meeting between the Buddhist monk Mahinda and King Devanampiyatissa which inaugurated the presence of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. It is now a pilgrimage site, and the site of several religious monuments and abandoned structures.

🔗 Ambuluwawa Tower

Reaching the top of Ambuluwawa one can experience the most amazing views which could sometimes be covered by the ongoing mist. However, once the mist clears off the view can be scary and freak out climbers, especially those who have a fear of heights. Do note that hiking Ambuluwawa is not at all dangerous or risky, but it would not be the ideal kind of adventure for those with a fear of heights.

Avoid leaning on the railing to capture photographs especially at the top as this is extremely risky and one could easily slip off from here. Ambuluwawa is a relatively easy hike to do which gives you 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains, forests, rivers and towns.

It is an area richly diverse, with evergreen forests, blossomed flower plants as well creepers and about 200 different kinds of plants from 80 plant families including a variety of medicinal plants. Ambuluwawa is surrounded by many mountains including Piduruthalagala from the East, Bible Rock (Bathalegala) from the West, Sri Pada (Adam's Peak) from the South and Knuckles Mountain Range from the North. Apart from these mountains many other mountains are also clearly visible from here and adds to the beauty of the area.

These are the Hanthana Mountain Range, Hunnasigiri Mountain and mountain ranges associated with Algalla and Kadugannawa. There is a cool mountain breeze in the area due to this reason. The Ambuluwawa Hill and the adjacent forest is designated as a forest reservation which is named as the Ambuluwawa ICC Forest Reservation. The history of the Ambuluwawa Temple dates back to the 13th century during the reign of King Buwanekabahu IV.

It is said that the Ambuluwawa Peak was the center of the Gampola Kingdom during his reign. But there is nothing with historical or archaeological values in here.

🔺 Turmeric

Turmeric (botanical name Curcuma longa (/'k3:rkjumə 'longǝ/), is a flowering plant in the ginger family Zingiberaceae. It is a perennial, rhizomatous, herbaceous plant native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia that requires temperatures between 20 and 30 °C (68 and 86 °F) and high annual rainfall to thrive.

Plants are gathered each year for their rhizomes, some for propagation in the following season and some for consumption.

The rhizomes are used fresh or boiled in water and dried, after which they are ground into a deep orange-yellow powder commonly used as a coloring and flavoring agent in many Asian cuisines, especially for curries, as well as for the dyeing characteristics imparted by the principal turmeric constituent, curcumin. Turmeric powder has a warm, bitter, black pepper-like flavor and earthy, mustard-like aroma.

Curcumin, a bright yellow chemical produced by the turmeric plant, is approved as a food additive by the World Health Organization, European Parliament, and United States Food and Drug Administration. [6] Although long used in Ayurvedic medicine, there is no high-quality clinical evidence that consuming turmeric or curcumin is effective for treating any disease. [9] [10]

🔹 Black Pepper

Black pepper (Piper nigrum) is a flowering vine in the family Piperaceae, cultivated for its fruit (the peppercorn), which is usually dried and used as a spice and seasoning. The fruit is a drupe (stonefruit) which is about 5 mm (0.20 in) in diameter (fresh and fully mature), dark red, and contains a stone which encloses a single pepper seed.

Peppercorns and the ground pepper derived from them may be described simply as pepper, or more precisely as black pepper (cooked and dried unripe fruit), green pepper (dried unripe fruit), or white pepper (ripe fruit seeds).

Black pepper is native to the Malabar Coast of India, and the Malabar pepper is extensively cultivated there and in other tropical regions. Ground, dried, and cooked peppercorns have been used since antiquity, both for flavour and as a traditional medicine. Black pepper is the world's most traded spice, and is one of the most common spices added to cuisines around the world.

Its spiciness is due to the chemical compound piperine, which is a different kind of spiciness from that of capsaicin characteristic of chili peppers. It is ubiquitous in the Western world as a seasoning, and is often paired with salt and available on dining tables in shakers or mills.

Rawana falls 🌊🌊

Touring the idyllic town of Ella would be incomplete if one misses out on experiencing the wonder of Ravana Falls. Renowned for being one of Sri Lanka’s widest waterfalls, this 82 ft. the cascading body of water is nestled within the Ravana Ella Wildlife Sanctuary and a further six km from the Ella Railway Station.

While providing outstanding opportunities for a leisurely swim, adventure seekers will also find that climbing some of the rocks located nearby affords awe-inspiring vistas of both the falls as well as some of Ella’s treasured surroundings.

Ravana falls is named after the demon King Ravana who according to traditional folklore is believed to have ruled Sri Lanka. It is a popular sightseeing attraction in Sri Lanka and currently ranks as one of the widest waterfalls in the country.

It is best visited during the local wet season when the water is said to resemble an Areca flower with withering petals. This is situated in the 12-13thmilepost of Ella Wellawaya road. Ravana Falls can also be reached by travelling 10km towards Wellawaya from Kubalwela junction in Badulla Bandarawela road and could be a quick stop along the way as it can be viewed from the main road.

Sri Lankan jungle fowl 🐔🐓

Known during the colonial era as the Ceylon Jungle Fowl, the Sri Lankan Jungle Fowl is endemic to the island and is also the national bird of Sri Lanka. In Sinhala it is known as Walikukula. As with other junglefowl, the Sri Lankan Junglefowl is strongly sexually dimorphic: the male is much larger than the female, with more vivid plumage and a highly exaggerated wattle and comb.

The male Sri Lankan Juglefowl ranges from 66-73 cm (26-29 in) in length and 790-1,140 g (1.7-2.5 lb) in weight, essentially resembling a large muscular rooster. The male has orange-red body plumage, and dark purple to black wings and tail. The feathers of the mane descending from head to base of spine are golden and the face has bare red skin and wattles. The comb is red with a yellow centre. As with the Green Junglefowl, the c**k does not possess an eclipse plumage.

The female is much smaller, at only 35 cm (14 in) in length and 510-645 g (1.1-1.42 lb) in weight, with dull brown plumage with white patterning on the lower belly and breast, ideal camouflage for a nesting bird.

The Sri Lankan Junglefowl is most closely related to the Green Junglefowl, though physically it resembles the Grey Junglefowl and the Red Junglefowl. Like the Green Junglefowl, Sri Lankan Junglefowl are island species that have evolved side by side with their similarly stranded island predators and competitors. As with most other pheasants, Sri Lanka Junglefowl is a teresstrial species. It spends most of its time foraging for food by scratching the ground for various seeds, fallen fruit and insects. It is a ground nesting bird, and lays 2-4 eggs in a nest. Similar to many members of the pheasant family, the colourful male plays no part in the incubation of the eggs or rearing of the young.

🔘 Lanka Tilaka Image House

The meaning of lankathilaka is the 'beauty spot of Sri Lanka'. The colossal image house consists with two impressive guardian figures in front and large columns. It occupies the centre of the complex. Inside, there had been 13 meter high standing Buddha statue, now a torso.

The statue made out of bricks and plastered with several layers of lime. Various shapes and sizes of bricks have been used in order to suite the purpose.

All walls in and outside are finely decorated with stucco carvings and inside with murals. Chulawansa describes "A charming image house of five stories adorned with ornaments of flowers and creepers and with figures of gods and Brhamas and embellished with buildings turrets grottoes, apartments and halls." This is a new phase of brick architecture.

Remaining wall stands up to 17 meters. The image house would be 38m x 20m and when this is completed, the height would be 32m or more. It is such a massive building that all three types of worshipping practiced in Sri Lanka could be seen here. I.e. Päda wnadanä or worshipping feet, Sheirsha wandanä or worshipping head and Prdakshinä vandanä or worshipping while circumambulating The granite building in front of the image house is not identified yet.

We can see beautiful pillars and stone flat form. This might be the first instance that a drummer's hall to be added to a Buddhist temple. Drummers' halls have become very popular during the Kandyan period (17th century). The drummers' halls are being used to play drums during the ceremonies and use to prepare offerings to the image house.

🔺 Alahana Pirivena Complex

As there are many crematory stupas, the place was called 'Alahana'. It is now been declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Major buildings set on series of brick-faced terraces shaped from natural hillside, following the tradition of Buddhist monastery.

This monastic university complex consists of faculties, living cells with two stories and tiled roof, a combined bath and toilet units with separate pits, pools, and steam baths, a hospital, refectories, Image houses, Stupas and a large chapter house laid out in a planned manner. It is believed that, as there was no proper education after the Chola period (993-1055 AD), the discipline of the monks was deteriorated.

Therefore, King Parakarabahu the Great on the advice of Ven. Dimbulagala Kashyapa Thera, built this complex for the education and betterment of the Order of Buddhist monks.
