The Sinhala & Tamil New Year marks the transition of the Sun from Meena (Pisces) to Mesha (Aries) in the Zodiac. Most Sri Lankans celebrate this prosperous and vibrant festival, which involves carrying out a range of rituals at auspicious times. During this time homes are cleaned, and traditional delicacies are prepared to celebrate the arrival of a new year. It is considered a time for renewing relationships and bonds, and much like the Sinhala Buddhists, the Tamil Hindus emphasize the importance of family, friends and community during the New Year’s celebrations.

During this festival the head of the household plays a significant role leading the family through a set of rituals. For the Hindu Tamils, the first ritual of the New Year’s Day is the anointing of Maruthuneer (holy herbal oil from the kovils) by the household elder. Following the first bath of the year, a prayer is sent to the Sun with an offering of flowers. The entrance of the house is then decorated with Kolam (coloured rice patterns). The Kumbham (a pot filled with water with a coconut on its mouth and a coronet of five or seven mango leaves, symbolizing Lord Ganesh or Goddess Gauri) is placed in the home to bless the household with prosperity while oil lamps are lit.

The hearth is lit at an auspicious hour for the first time in the new year, and milk is boiled and Pongal (sweetened milk rice) or Kiri Bath (milk rice) is prepared as the first meal upon following the auspicious times, symbolizing prosperity and abundance. In both Sinhalese and Tamil households, the younger members of the house pay their respects to the elders, and the elders bless them and give a gift of money wrapped in a betel leaf. This is followed by the performing of rituals which traditionally includes the ploughing of the field for the first time of the season. Finally, the family settles down for the first meal of the new year, after which they visit the temple for blessings and give their greetings to family and friends.
