Hambanthota's Martello Tower is a small circular fort dominated by the Martello Tower (a 15th-century fort on Corsica's Torra di Motella (Myrtle) Point that survived a British Royal Navy attack in 1794). The tower was built between 1804 and 1806 to protect the harbor and settlement at Hambantota after the failed attack by the Upland rebels in 1803. Captain Gopher of the Corps of Engineers is credited with building the tower (however, there is no mention of such a person in British Army records). In the year 1796, Captain Bridgers, who was engaged in preparing plans for the construction of a similar Martello Tower in Simmons Town, Cape Town, Asabada, South Africa, was the commanding engineer in Ceylon during the construction of this tower, and there was a close similarity between the Hambantota Tower and the aforementioned tower.

In September 1803, HMS Wilhamina, which made a brief stop at Hambantota, landed an eight-man squadron of Royal Artillery and reinforced the British fleet to help repel a subsequent upland attack.[1]

The Martello tower was 12 m (39 ft) in diameter at the base and 1.2 m (3 ft 11 in) thick, and 7.6 m (25 ft) high. It had an unusually located bulge surrounding the wall. Similar to the English towers, the entrance to this fort is through a gate that opens to the first floor, but unlike the others, the Hambantota tower has several turrets. In the ground floor there was a storage room and a military store. Among the turret's armament were two 6-pounder guns, three 3-pounder guns, and several 2-pounder and 1-pounder guns. In 1813, most of the small guns were replaced by a 5-1/2-inch howitzer, and in 1814 two 18-pounder guns were added.

The tower was restored in 1999. In the past, this tower housed the land registration office of Hambantota Kachcheriya. Today, it houses the Fisheries Museum.
