The past weeks in a few words:
Laughter, hugs, food, yoga, meditation, hikes, adventures, nature... can life get any better?❤️🥹

Can't believe it's been 2 weeks that I'm here, my heart is so filled with the magnetic energy of this place, and for meeting such beautiful souls throughout my journey.

There's 2 more weeks to go- we go from nature to the beach soon🏖🏄‍♀️😏

My first safari 🥹🇱🇰🐘 Seeing elephants in their natural environment was so beautiful, we needed to be very patient and they got closer and closer to us😍
..but the highlight was when we saw a wild elephant on the road while driving back to our accommodation. It crossed the road right in front of us, was absolutely incredible🙏
Also another one was just walking next to the road. Still mind-blowing whenever I see them like this, feels unreal.

It's only been 5 days here in Sri Lanka and I'm just so full of memories already. Cannot wait to see what the next 24 days will hold🥰🇱🇰

Merrill J Fernando a true son of the soil, a man who showed ‘what Sri Lanka can do’. He never bowed down to large multinationals, nor listened to sceptics, and hypocrites; and built a brand with pure ceylon tea. He defied all odds and succeeded challenging all norms.

My father-in- law a true legend, an inspiration. His legacy of ‘human kindness’ and pride in our country, he leaves two generations who share his conviction and will continue his work.

He was relentless against efforts at compromise, or adulteration of his beloved Ceylon Tea. In his belief in integrity, and in value addition in Sri Lanka, as the only means of benefiting workers and the future of Ceylon Tea.

With utmost gratitude ❤️

His remains will lie at Restpect Funeral Parlour on Friday, 21 July 2023 from 8AM-8PM and Saturday 22 July from 8AM-1200Noon, followed by a Private burial at St. Mary's - Pallansena, Negombo.

Breakfast at - smoothie bowls are to die for. You feel like you’ve gone the wrong way finding it but then it’s magic!
Lunch at - vegan bowls of goodness all round (yea that creamy mushroom toast really is vegan…so is the coffee!!)

Dinner at Balaji Dosai - we got masala Dosai and shared it for three nights in a row!

Being a suitcase entrepreneur in Sri Lanka means you’re set in the heart of the Indian Ocean. Even if nature is not your thing, other magnetic pulls of Sri Lanka will steal your heart! ❤️

One special moment has been our visit to Sigiriya. We got up at 3.45 am to go and hike up the volcanic hill Pidurangala to catch the sunrise over Lion’s Rock and we were not disappointed! I mean, look at that view!⁠ ⁠⁠😍⁠

Like many islands though, Sri Lanka certainly does present some challenges to the average location-independent individual working online 🤭

Some obstacle that you are likely to come across in Sri Lanka if you work online is: ⁠

👉 Iffy Internet connection. ⁠
👉 Weekly power cuts. ⁠
👉 No Reels & music for IG.
⁠
With that being said, working online in Sri Lanka is most definitely possible! ☺️

But if you are considering working as a digital nomad in Sri Lanka, I recommend that you pick up a SIM card as soon as possible and locate some co-working spaces around the country. Especially if your business is dependent on online video sessions, like mine. ⁠

🐒 Welcome to the Monkey Kingdom!

🐵 Did you know our island is home to more than 2 million monkeys?!? The main three types of monkeys you will come across Toque macaque ( golden-brown coloured Macaca, endemic to Sri Lanka and the most common), Tufted gray langur and Purple-faced leaf monkey.

🏰The ancient city of Polonnaruwa is home to the vast majority of monkeys, this group reminded us of the movie Mogli. Legend says the descendants of great Hanumantha live in the Jungles of Sri Lanka!

Without a doubt, one of the best things we did the last 7 months, was rent a tuktuk to drive around Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 🛺

It gave us complete freedom and flexibility to see the country, not having to worry about waiting around for buses or trains. Not to mention, it made it way easier to haul our luggage around.

The best thing about is that they are a social company who don’t just buy a fleet of tuktuks and then rent them out. Instead, they borrow the vehicles from tuktuk drivers and owners who have little to no work and rent them out to tourists on their behalf. This means that when you rent a tuktuk, you are actively helping the local communities in Sri Lanka get back on their feet during what is a very difficult time for the country.

Einsteigen bitte! Wir düsen mit unserem Gerät einmal durch Sri Lanka 🥳 Sehen Elefanten, Strände, Krokodile und Teeplantagen 🥰 Besser gehts doch gar nicht oder? Wir lieben es einfach frei zu reisen und in Sri Lanka musste es einfach stilecht mit tuk tuk sein. Auch damit Elle nicht immer das ganze Gepäck tragen muss, wie sonst auf dem Roller 😅

We drove around in Sri Lanka like a local for 2 weeks 🛺 (anzeige)

Renting a tuktuk was the best choice we made because it allowed us to move around flexibly, stop wherever we want and save a lot of money compared to hiring a driver / taxi! The only thing we regret is not renting it earlier… it really was the best way to travel around for us and we could even take our suitcases. 🧳

Petrol cost only ~ 10€ / $10 for 200km, which probably makes it the cheapest way to travel around if you don’t wanna use busses in Sri Lanka which can be quite late and unreliable.

is a social company that rents tuktuks from locals so that they can earn some money. Especially now that the economy isn’t the best in Sri Lanka, tourists are very welcome and people are so grateful for opportunities to earn an extra income!

Prices for a tuktuk start at $14 / day. The longer you rent, the cheaper your rate. Use the code laurafruitfairy for a discount. 🎁

Everything you need to know about this WORLD FAMOUS TRAIN in 2022 🚂🇱🇰

✨ Like everyone else, I expected to ride on the BLUE train…in 2022, the blue train no longer runs from Kandy > Ella (or vice versa). So here are your options:

🚝 The new train is white with a blue and red stripe (still cool but not the one you see in the classic pics). Here are the times of this train:

🚝 7.30am - this is a super new tourist train & stops at all the right picture points, MU CH more expensive than a usual train but usually has last minute reserved tickets available. Less locals though (due to cost).

🚝 8:30am, 10:45am - much cheaper, still the new design of train.

🚂 Our advice: Wait until 12:30pm & you can get on the older and slower train (thats the one we took) its red and more rustic

🚂 We sat reserved first class (as its an older train there is no aircon so the windows and doors are open in first class WIN WIN). Its all reserved so no one is standing in your aisle & there’s enough time for everyone to have their time hanging out the doors.

✨ Where to catch the train: It might be called the Kandy > Ella train but you really want to be heading to Peradeniya station (the stop before Kandy). Less busy, less queuing for tickets & more chance of getting a seat if unreserved.

✨ Where to sit for the best views: From Kandy to Ella you want to be on the right until Nanu Oya stop and then the best views are on the left! Opposite from Ella > Kandy

✨Class system explained in the comments!

✨ Conclusion: If you can, pre-buy your ticket with reserved seating!! With gas & petrol shortages in Sri Lanka right now, the trains are much busier & its around 4 hours before anyone gets off, total time is 6-8 hrs! Our experience was comfortable, with incredible views and we got the full experience hanging out the windows / doors!
